Title: WI Tour Warm Up 3/18
Post by: Mukey on February 21, 2006, 12:53:38 PM
Less than a month to go. Anyone besides me planning on going? I've never played the course so I'm taking 3/17 off to travel up there & play the course. What's the real scoop on the Janesville course? I never trust the descriptions in the PDGA directory.

I am planning on playing. Have not played there yet.

Weather is a big IF that time of year.  However, if its reasonably dry I was planning on playing there too.  I've never been to Janesville.  Its cool that the pros are playing the same day as the rest of us mortals.  Chris Heeran is listed as registered.  It will be fun to watch a 1000+ rated player (along with the 970somethings) after finishing my rounds.

For any local or semi-local is there a place to eat lunch around the course? I don't want to miss the start to the 2nd round (Sorry Neal, couldn't resist the cheap shot).

QuoteWeather is a big IF that time of year.  However, if its reasonably dry I was planning on playing there too

last year was nasty - just a soggy mess of a day.  to make things worse the tees were a mixture of rocks and mud that was impossible to move freely in.

the course is nice - a mix of short and long holes, elevations changes, water if you really shaft your shot, and all the other things that make courses fun.  if the weather is nice it will be worth driving a few hours for.

Hey guys...

I came on here to START a thread but I see it is already here.  Thanks.

I can give a few updates about the event.  First off, the weather is really the impossible part to guess here.  We might have 4 to 6 inches of snow on the ground or it might be a muddy, wet mess like last year.  The course is damaged much less if there is snow on the ground so I'm going to wish for that.

Secondly, they have ADDED 5 new tee pads to the course so that means that holes 1-9 do have CEMENT tees.  Again, some concern over the muddy tees last year is very understandable so this will help with a few more of the holes.  They are doing fundraising there to get 9 more cement tees but that will not happen prior to the WI Tour Warm Up.  So this was your official - notice or warning about the tees.

The baskets are in fact HOMEMADE baskets that catch pretty darn well for being homemade.  They are in the process of replacing the baskets and as soon as they get some more money, those will be replaced.  Again, this is your official - notice or warning about the baskets.

The course itself is a very fun and moderately challenging course.  It has many rolling hills and moderate length.  Most holes are reachable and duecable with a good drive.  Janesville is a growing scene in the world of disc golf and it's great to see Jake Jacobson, Marty Morgan, AND the Janesville Parks Department behind it!

All details should be posted here on the flyer
www.lifetimediscsports.com/events/witourwarmup.pdf

Better yet, I have had some serious Discontinuum help from Mirth and it looks like online registration will be up and live in the next few days.  Check back to www.takeflighttoday.com for more details on that.

Pre-Reg for this because with the buzz aboutt this event, I think we could seriously fill!  I am doing my best to update all registrants online as they come in.  In fact, I just updated it today.

Any questions - just shoot me a message via e-mail, give me a call, or send me an IM.

Ter

Brett,

I had to miss IL State last year 'cause of a wedding. NO MORE!

P.S. If the next Club Meeting will be before or after 3/18 I planned on attending, so I could pick my tag up then....

Pre-Registrations are starting to come in.  In fact, I even had 3 online ones come in just today.

This event is going to be fun and probably very well attended so I make the strong suggestion that if you plan to come and play, I'd pre-register as soon as possible to secure your spot.

We have registration available online (www.takeflighttoday.com) and also via standard check/mail system.  Either way is perfectly fine but be sure to get it in!

Thanks,

Ter

i played janesville yesterday.  to my suprise they had something like 4 inches of hard pack snow on the ground over the whole course.  i drove from rockford to janesville to madison to milwaukee then back to rockford and that was the only place i saw snow!  the new tee pads are huge and the natural tees were in really good condition, except for the long hole on the top of the hill which was completely covered in the white stuff.

I just signed up for tourney online today played the course last week but was sick all weekend and am still moderately sick now.  I liked the course, good mix of holes, and if they made the back 9 concrete before the tourney that would be sweet.

Get your entry fees in. Terry said there would be a max of 90 players. You will be turned away if it fills. 1/3rd of the field is already registered.

Yes, he'd prefer 72 but will allow 90 if that many show. Anyways, i'd preregister to play it safe.

Yo yo yo guys!

The turnout has been pretty cool thus far.  We are looking at as many pre-registered players today as we had for the whole event last year.  Glad to see people are securing their spot.  At this rate we will have to go from 72 to 90 but we won't have room for more than that.  I have generic 18 hole scorecards so that means 90 is the max.  You still have a few days to MAIL in registrations or pay the few extra bucks and do it online and be done with it.  www.takeflighttoday.com (http://www.takeflighttoday.com) for online registration:)

* I will have just about every single latest disc on the market at this event.  Recently I received Star Valks and Aviars and a fresh stack of Star Wraiths along with DX Wraiths.  I have a few Discraft Surge left along with the GT Buzzz and the X and Z Avengers.

Did I mention that I have CE Rocs?  I have hmm, enough of them but I will only accept cash.  I am in NO HURRY to get rid of them but if you want one - I'm sure we can work something out.

Let me know if you guys have any questions.

I slogged through 18 holes of muck today in Janesville.  I like the course.  It is not too long.  However, with the conditions you really can't do much of a run up so it will play long this weekend. It would be fun to play in the summer when its dry..  There are a lot of wooded holes that give you a reasonable path to the pin.

There are concretes on the first nine.  The concrete is not that big.  I would normally start a couple feet behind these.  KVN would start about a mile behind them.  The concretes are an island surrounded by mud.  You really have to start on the concrete or you will wind up doing a face plant on the concrete.   I was practicing a three step runup today.  I have never used one before but will try it this weekend.  The baskets on some holes are also surrounded by muck.  The back nine has no concrete but there isn't as much mud on the back nine.  However, I almost killed myself sliding down the hill on I think 11 or 12.

The fairways are not as bad as the areas around the tees and baskets.  The whole park isn't slop, just the tees and pins.  There are some nice elevation changes in the park and lots of nice old trees  Its not very well marked.  Many of the poles that list the distance are down.  Not sure if they wre victems of the wind or if they have been down for a while.

It will be good to feel like a kid and play in the mud this weekend. :P

It will be a day in the mud but hopefully it shouldn't too LONG.  The course is relatively easy so hopefully we don't have any major problems or backups.

The FREE pizza at lunch should help ease some bellies!  I do apologize to anyone that registered good and early - I didn't mean for registration to get out of hand like it did.  Crazy part is, I turned away nearly 20 people thus far!  I know the extra 15 that are in are JUMPING FOR JOY and hopefully their joy will outweigh anyone's sadness of having more players and more holes to play.

Tom - thanks for registering early - you were one of the guys that did and I appreciate that!

Thanks for the course update.  I think #12 is the one with the hill just past the tee.  Was there snow at the top of that hill?  Any other snow on the ground up there?

It might get cold enough for the mud to freeze by this weekend.  Never thought I would hope for cold weather for a tournament.  Free pizza at the break should make up for that.

Most of the poles were down when I checked the course out on the fifth.  Hopefully, Terry will have some distances for us on Saturday.

I don't know what Terry has in mind, but there were no alt tee boxes, pads, marks etc yesterday.  Also, there wasn't any snow.

Brett wasn't kidding...Tomorrow they expect 4-6" of flakes. That should help.

OK, it's 3:45 and I haven't seen a flake of snow here in Downers Grove, so I'm hoping it'll be lighter snow than forecasted as they said we'd get 2-4". But I am a WAYS off from Janesville.....

I'll be running the bag tag challenge during the event.(I'm only playing the first day, so anyone else want to volunteer for Sunday?)

I look forward to putting a face to the many names here, playing well, and having a great time. I'll be following the procedure that Bruce posted in the bag Tag Challenge thread. See you there!

Wish I could. It's just an all out bad weekend of disc golf for me. I'll be in Bloomington on Saturday then driving back up on Sunday morning. I have an awards banquet for basketball at 5pm.

The Discontiuum Club made a strong showing Saturday at the Wisconsin Tour Warm Up.  It looks like the Winter League play has paid off. Tom Schodtler shot two 1000 rated rounds to take third place in open. Between rounds Tom said, "I was in Chris' group, he had the box, and I just followed him around."  Excellent job Tom.

Alex Bingman came back strong in the second round with a 1000 rated round, including a sweet ace.  Speaking of aces Mitch Wallace also hit an ace. Nice job Mitch.

In Advanced Neal Swanson jumped out to a three stroke lead after the first round, which he did not relinquish in the second round. Strong play both rounds carried Neal to the win. Jose Diaz and Sergio Correa also played very well taking third and fifth respectively.

Chris Mukukenow did an excellent job handling bag tags. Collecting them and then getting them passed out quickly after the rounds.

Terry Miller did a great job, the course was packed, the rounds were a little slow with 5 on a card, but it was worth it to allow everyone to play who wanted to play.  It was a very well run tourney and the Pizza was a bonus. Unfortunately some people had to get greedy and there was not enough to go around. Maybe next time people can be a little more considerate. Janesville is a nice course, which will be even better when they get the concrete tees installed in the back nine.

Tom, thanks for the vote of confidence, but without the help of Chris Jordan, Mitch, & Nick I never would've gotten them out to people I'm not yet familiar with as quickly. Thanks for the help guys. I hope all can go as smoothly in Kenosha, but I'm sure we'll have more than 15 club members there. :-)

Post by: discglfr on March 19, 2006, 05:07:19 PM
It's about 7:PM on Sunday night and like last night - I've got the scores up for all to see. Certainly there are more details to come in the next few days but the UNOFFICIAL details and results are up.

I shot with Cale second round - yeah that shooting was ok I guess - if you like 1091 rated rounds.
