They finally made a date for the Homie this year. It will be 10-8. I just received the following e-mail from Bart:

Thanks for the update, David :)
That's the Sunday after USWDGC.....I'll be good and warmed up :)

Besides the Homie Memorial are the other 2 events sanctioned?
i believe they are Juan.
For sure Oly is, since its on the PDGA Tour page.
Thanks Dan, I didn't see it on the tour page :-\.
If anyone in the Downers Grove area is thinking about going to any of these, I'd be down to carpool. Not so sure about Oly on 9/3, but the others are on my schedule.
Would anyone in the north burbs like to ride with me to Olympia Fields on 9/3.
There is no league at Bevier and I thought I might go there.
I bailed on the spring event there due to pouring rain and this is kind of a fun course.
The Homie is one of my favorite events each year. You will want to make the trip.
Do they have any email or online way of registration? I'd rather go that route over phone calls. I'd like to help represent the rec division at this tournament :)
Anyone interested in heading out to Lemon Lake on Saturday to play the course, and camping out that night before the tournament?
Here's the flyer in a little more screen friendly size. If you want to print it, use Brett's version.
You know I'm planning on it.
I emailed Bart about the tournament, and here was the response I received about registration:
Brian Cummings is taking pre-regs and can be reached at 219-836-8240. The course is still being planned and I will send out a mass e-mail when it is decided but I can give you this: we will take the existing 27 holes and turn them into 2 18 or 21 hole courses. We have a team in charge of this every year and they are finalizing the layout. We usually have short tees for the lower divisions on some of the long /difficult holes...again this is still being planned but is SOP for this tourny.
I'm not sure if I want to know what SOP stands for, but anyway, I guess if you want to be on his email distribution, you can contact him at bart@channelzdj.com Or you can just wait for me to post as he added me to his distribution list.
And fyi, the link to the tournament website on pdga.com is incorrect... it is supposed to point to www.channelzdj.com (http://www.channelzdj.com) instead of just channelz.com
SOP = Standard Operating Procedure
This is a must play. I don't think too many people preregister for this tournament and it can hold well over 200 players. I think there has been in the 150 to 160 range the past 3 years.
I see it says tee off is at 9:30. I know there was some talk about time changes and what no the past few years. Is Cedar Lake on Central time right now? Just making sure so i'm not late.

Good point! From what I just looked up, Cedar Lake, IN is in Lake County, which is Central time AND follows Daylight Savings Time in that county. So their time is the exact same as ours. Man that would be terrible to show up and realize you're an hour late!

A buddy of mine & I mis-calculated last year & ended up getting to Valpo 2 hours before they were even taking registration. Lol!
At least he got a practice round in on that course, I put it on an even level with Lemon Lake.
Homie and Bowling Green = best tournaments of the year
around what time does the tourney usually end? I want to try to make it home on time to finally watch the bears.

The Bears play at Noon on the 8th so not only will the game be over, but the players will already be at home. Don't expect to get out of the Homie before 6pm.

It doesn't really matter. The Bears/Bills game is at noon. You will not see any of it no matter how early you may get out. In any case, I doubt you will be in your car before 5pm but I have not played this one before. Looking forward to it. I will listen to the radio and hear about the victory on the way home.
you're right, for some reason I thought it was this weekend when the bears play the sunday night game. My bad. sorry about that.

WOW!! thats me in the flood waters at the spring fling 02 I dont remember what I was doing in there ???
Holy Crap!
They mentioned this last year at Riverside but I had a hard time believing that people still played with the course like that.
Had to suck trying to find discs....
hurt the leg on sat
so no disc yesterday
hoping the leg is better by sunday or ill be dead last
c u all here
get there early (less traffic)
This was emailed out this morning... hopefully this area has not been affected too much by the rain! Since it's only a 1-day event, I'm presuming it's 1 round per course for 2 total rounds, not 2 rounds of each of the 2 courses making 4 total rounds? 4 rounds would be insane! 84 holes in one day? hehe

This Sunday at Lemon Lake.
2 rounds of 2 different 21 hole courses.
$1500 added to the pro purse...
Weather forecast 71 degrees

Right it's only 42 holes. 84 would be near impossible in one day with the projected big field showing up. Would be fun though!
Just got another email about this. Additional details that were added:
Lunch will be provided.
Doubles....Saturday 10-7-06 at 2:00pm
Lemon Lake is on CENTRAL TIME!!!!!!
Homie is the real deal. Bowling Green is the king's new clothes. Seriously, what does Bowling Green have that makes it so special besides a big attendance? Two good courses of the four you play? CTPs? No. Jumbo tosses? No. Food? No. Bowling Green is a totally naked, fat monarch.
Unless you want to get your Worlds points in one weekend and take the rest of the year off.
What Bruce said. At the Homie you get lunch and dinner (they don't advertise dinner but they've always had plenty of food for anyone that wants dinner), two great courses and good payouts for both pros and ams, and a TD that delivers a well run tourney. Have fun all that are going. This is the kind of event that I'd go just to take pictures but I need to catch up on homework and get the IOS #6 TD report done.

Actually I'd say Bowling Green has only 1 good course (keriakes). The rest are mostly boring except for a few holes. But the large attendance makes it alot of fun. Lemon Lake is a great course and you get the food action which is what its all about.

well, a great course and a half. some of the temp holes were pretty dull out in the open field, but they had to do something to stretch it to 21x2 I guess.

When I'm being critically honest, I try to be generous. Some people like Keriakis, some like Hobson Grove. But Lovers Lane and White are just cow pastures like Fairfield. Other than the fact that the tournament has reached critical mass for self-generating large fields, it is really nothing.
Last year Homie had food, CTPs, payouts, cool trophies, two good courses and a lot of players. Homie has it all.

I would agree that the temp holes leave something to be desired. I've played it twice and the temp holes were made easier and duller the 2nd time. I heard that 3 years ago they were pretty tough. The land is defnitely out there to make great holes if they want to.
From those pictures I've seen though I'm sure it makes it tough to put in some of those extra holes in the lower ground areas due to the massive amounts of water.
Anyone headed out for doubles on Saturday also?
Super excited about this tourney. Sounds like it should be a great time and some good golf. Not sure yet about doubles but I will definitely be out there on Saturday practicing.

Jon I'm not sure if I'm headed out there on Saturday or not now. I guess a friend is coming into town around lunchtime so I may have plans there. Get in touch with me tomorrow or Saturday and we can maybe ride together that direction.
I'll get a hold of you tomorrow and see if you know more. If not we could still head down there together on Sunday for the tourney...btw anyone know what kind of traffic to expect at 6:30/7 on the dan ryan?? is it already busy by then or should it be ok?
Expect some traffic, but nothing compared to Monday-Friday.
cool, thanks...I just remember trying to get to Mokena on a saturday morning at 10 and running into a complete traffic jam that turned an hour drive into over 2
Course update from Bart...
...Although we have had a lot of rain in the past week, most of it fell north of Lemon Lake. I walked the course yesterday and although it is soggy in places it is VERY playable. Although I did change socks at the end of the day it was a result of my efforts to drain hole 27, not from walking the course. The forecast calls for more drying and no rain between now and Sunday. The recent rain did kill our efforts to install 6 more concrete teepads this week but the existing tees were swept yesterday and in excellent condition. Look for Lemon Lake to transform itself into 2 permament 18 hole courses over the coming winter. :toothy2:
Alright I got in about 14 holes today before we had to jet to see the Tigers win and the course looks like it's in great shape. This is coming from someone who has not played there before, but it all looked pretty good and there was a mowing crew out there mowing circles around the baskets as we left. Should be a good show tomorrow especially with the weather being so great!
I had a lot of fun at the Homie today. Lost my dyed Champ Leopard to the lake... :( RIP. Funny seeing 2 discs just laying on top of the water, makes me wish I had a 50' net that I could just bring those in and return them to their proper homes!
DISContinuum was VERY well represented. I don't even know all of you guys, so I'm sure there was more there than I realize! The only sad thing (for us rec players) is that a 13-year old kid won rec with a 7 over total for the day. However, he's been playing disc golf since he was two he told me, and it's also his home course. That's a BIG help. I know that Mitch took 4th in Rec, Bruce took... 2nd? I think, in Am Master, and anybody else that placed can post here, I wasn't paying too close of attention at the award ceremony. There was WAY too much talking going on in that room, and the guy really needed to use that microphone.
Players pack came with a t-shirt, a mini, and a birdie bag. I must say, Mr. Brakel, you come up with a MUCH cooler offer for a player pack for people! Go Discraft!
Scott
u don't need a 50 foot rod, we jsut went in there and grabbed 22 discs after the round. didn't see a champ leopard though sorry.
also, congrats to Todd FAnning for 2nd in advanced and takign the 50/50 CTP for 125 bucks

Yeah, and I lost by a stroke. I was 8 up. I got second in Rec. I had 2 duece putts on the last two holes an I miss them both. Oh well. I had a good time and in the end, thats all that really matters.

By any chance did you find my Dr. Dyed Viking? Sad to say some fish now has that disc in his bag.
Great weather and a very fun day. I liked the moment of loudness for Matt Lovasko. That was a nice way to start the day.
My wife is on to me. She thinks I really didn't leave at 6 am and return at 7 pm to play disc golf She says I must be having an affair. "Why?" I asked. "Well I never see any trophys." She replied. Obviously she hasn't seen me play.
lol, but at least you got a new disc!
Based on what i shot and how it felt shooting it, I think the rec winner will come in with 890ish kinds of rounds. I beat him by twelve throws. I felt like I had a 960 and a 910. 890ish is about right for winning in Rec.
I thought the tournament was pretty good. The courses are good. I scouted the payouts for a couple of divisions, and without counting the food the payouts were fine. When you count the food, the tournament was pretty generous. There were some glitches, but every tournament has some glitches.
I think of the food as being part of the player pack. If you think of it that way, maybe the player pack was better than what we do.
Man I loved that tournament. I thought pretty much everything about it was top notch! The purpose of the tourney is to remember a friend and so I liked the t-shirt and mini because it does just that. Getting lunch and dinner is awesome! Not having to leave the tournament grounds speeds everything up in the end and it creates a better atmosphere I think.
As for the courses I was definitely impressed! I've never seen such detail put into alternate holes. Most of the time the holes are set up in appropriate positions, but just a flag here and a basket here and call it good. They mowed each fairway path, mowed around the green, made tee signs with lengths, put arrows to the next hole and pretty much made it feel like these weren't even alternate holes. Speed of play on everything was great two with the exception of the obvious giant risk/reward hole.
Payouts were great and the people were great. We didn't start on time, but I'd rather have a bigger field than start on time. The awards ceremony was a little crazy afterwards and the payout system was a little off because people were grabbing stuff even before they had their payout ticket. That was about the only downfall on the day I think. Bruce you were right though, this tourney has it all. I'll be there every year now. Nice to meet you also.

Did you happen to find an orange champ Firebird with a Local 101 disc golf club stamp? That's my buddy's and if he got it back I know he'd be really grateful.
Had a great time & this is a definite must-play if you're in driving distance. My first round left something to be desired, but second round was good and I bought a disc from Dan & Schumann on the way home.
The PA really helps drown out the usual chattering during the players meetings.
Was kinda fun to have us all watching the Bears game at lunch and everyone getting all pumped. Great atmosphere.

As far as this goes, people usually do get stuff & have them hold it if they know they're prizing, just to avoid the bridal-dress-sale rush at the end.
Kiralyn thought the merch situation was a little crazy, too. I didn't really notice because I gave Kiralyn my slip and told her to get all white Star, any molds any weights. We donate all our winnings to the IOSeries merch, and just keep trophies, momento minis or maybe a disc if we lost one that day.
At our tournaments we close merch during awards. While we are doing leaderboards you can put stuff on lay away, but once awards start, step away from the merch table! 8)
I'll keep this in mind for the future and not be so nice about leaving the discs I want up for grabs. I'm still pretty bitter about the ordeal. :)
Did someone find out how much they were charging for entry fees on this? I thought it would be $18 + $2 ace fund for a rec player. However, I get up there and I get charged $25. I'm wondering if they charged me an extra $5 even though I was PDGA current? It was such a mad fury for the registration that I didn't get a chance to really think twice about it. It sounded like a little later I was hearing that the people that were taking registrations (there were 5 or 6) might have been charging different prices (and not realizing that it was the improper amount). Maybe there was a $5 extra fee for not pre-registering?
I'm not upset about the extra $5, but I almost didn't have enough cash on me to take care of the various expenses on the day while I was out there!
I think the $5 was for the 50-50 hole. If you said put me in everything, they probably did. My entry cost me $35 for everything, which was $28 + $2 Ace Pool + $5 50-50.
At the last minute Brian apparently upped the Rec entry to $23. That was a surprise to me, but it wasn't for any of the other items. 50/50 CTP was still separate.

Yeah, I paid $23 also. It would have been nice to have been advised of the change but I have no complaints. There was, as Bruce noted above, plenty of bang for the buck. The food and the genrous nature of the volunteers went a very long way with me. Brian seemed a little frazzled and annoyed early as some of the volunteers were late and he was holding the bag. To say the least, it all worked out quite well.
This is one of my favorite events of the year. Both courses are very different and require a variety of shots. I was actually glad reg did not open on time. It gave me some extra time to get out and throw that morning. This could probably be the biggest event in IL & IN if it were listed with the PDGA earlier and advertised more. With all divisions on 1 day, free lunch and dinner, huge pro payouts, am payouts, & prices of champ/star, this event sets the standard in this area.

Or Tree will beat you silly! She has a tough job keeping all those pesky little hands off the plastic...she deserves a raise!
Oh, my only complaint I have about the Homie is that the shirts continue to get uglier each year ;D.

If you wound up getting discs you did not want so much, bring them to the Fairfield Farewell. I'll often trade new, unmarked, for new.
Any Baby Roc's?
For those of you who were at the Homie and know who Brian Cummings is (he was the TD with the microphone), check out your Disc Golf World magazine or whatever it is called that just came out last week. In the 1986 flashback section, I think on the first page (I don't have it here with me to check), at the bottom there is a picture of Brian from 20 years back with some other people. I just thought that was neat when I saw that :)
Does anyone know how long the turnaround time usually is for this group to post the results up on PDGA? Maybe you remember how long it was for last year's event? I'm just anxious to see all the scores again even though I didn't even win :) I also wanted to see my ratings because I felt like I did pretty well in the 2nd round.
I played in a B tier on Sept 16 that still isn't up yet either...so I feel your pain on both accounts. Being a TD is a losing battle though because most of the time it's just negative feedback and not much gratitude out of running a tournament, so I try not to complain about the small stuff like that. I just like to see my scores! :D

Definitely not complaining (been tough enough to wait this long to post the question that I did! hehe)... and yes, I'm definitely spoiled by the amazingly fast speeds that Jon gets everything posted. Just chompin at the bit to see the scores again lol. It's my first not-run-by-Jon sanctioned event, so the wait will take some getting used to :)
The red roc event I played on Sept 3 was posted last week
Looks like Brian is reporting sooner than last year. I played Riverside last year & was still bugging him about the results come '06. 1 month is not bad considering.
At Riverside on Sunday, Brian said to look for them sometime this week hopefully. I am anxious too even though I played terrible. Always curious to see my round ratings.
The Il St Chmps now has scores and unofficial ratings. Homie doesn't.
The Homie went down a notch in my estimation this year, maybe two notches. I felt like Brian took the ams for granted this year.

It was average, but with food. When you have good amateur attendance you can do much more than B-tier amateur payouts and donated food. I suppose he spent a lot on the trophies. It just seemed average, nothing special, other than the donated food which was delicious and much appreciated.
I think what I'm saying is, I know where the $1,000 added to the pros came from. I ran Byron Big D Doubles this year with 115% payouts for the amateurs AND I paid $1110 to the golf course for green fees. I had about the same number of amateurs to work with also.
If you just think about it objectively,
Food - Good food.
Player Packs - pretty lame
CTPs - not this year
Payouts - average
Merch selection - average
Here are the scores. He must have e-mailed them in because there are no unofficial ratings.
http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=6173
i thought that the merch selection was really good.
just curious, how do you rate your merch selectoin?
Better than average.
I agree with Bruce's assessment. Bruce has his inventory pretty well organized as well. They had some good stuff at the Homie (eg. CFR Star Rhyno and some other CFR discs), but it was not as organized (especially in the morning).
I don't want to get too off-topic, but I would probably classify someone with "great" or even "fantastic" offerings in merch to have one or two more brands aside from Innova and Discraft, probably 800-1000 discs available of various models, weights, colors, and plastic types, plenty of bags, mini's, and similar accessories. In addition to all that, offering CFR or other tournament-stamped discs is a definite plus. Having the occassional basket available (a pain since you never know if it will sell and it's bulky) is always nice. In addition to all of this: decent organization. You can have a bazillion discs, but if the people looking at them have to spend 20 minutes just to find out you don't have a particular disc left, it's junk! Dyed discs are an additional plus.
So I would put Bruce's stuff very close to that cateogry of great or even fantastic. I think it's very adaquate to support 100 players for each day of an IOS tournament.
Everyone's tastes are different. If you only throw Innova stuff, then someone with 300 Innova discs might tickle you pink. However, if you throw only Discraft or only Gateway, it makes it tough to want to spend your brass cash on anything since there isn't anything that you would want to pick up. It's always tough to know what to carry because you never know what the people coming to the tournament are really looking for.
Thank you for the kind words. Sometimes I wish I could carry more product lines, but to get the best prices I have to order in quantity, and I cant order 200 Millenium discs and 200 Ching discs and 200 Discwings, etc. There are now 14 or 15 disc companies. No one can carry everything. I do try to have baskets, bags, towels, birdie bags, hats and shirts at every tournament.
I had ten hoodies and ten polar fleece hats at Byron. Those went fast!
