Title: 2010 WORLDS
Post by: pdga#7648 on May 28, 2009, 09:45:13 PM
Was at the Iron Horse in Logansport Indiana last weekend. Was told that the 2010 Worlds is about 90% for sure to be in Indiana at Lemon Lake Park. 4 permanent corses in 1 park. I played the Indiana State Championships there last year, and the 2 and a half courses I played were very nice and challenging. Hope they land it there.

2010 Pro Worlds.  Probably closer to 99%.  Am Worlds will be in central Ohio.

Is there any cost for spectators attending the 2010 Pro Worlds?

besides the $4.00 to get into the park, I would say no.

Has Pro Worlds always had a $215 entry fee? That seems a little ridiculous. Was planning on going but that might be a little too much.

It has been that for atleast the last 3 years.  Agreed, thats alot of dough to play disc golf.  Its a tough decision for a lot of local players I'm sure.

I have played Worlds in
2004-Des Moines
2007-Hihghbridge
2008-Kalamazoo
2009-Kansas City

I have had a great time at all 4 events and plan to  play this year. The work that has been done at Lemon Lake getting ready for worlds is pretty awesome. It's going to be a great week of golf. It's well worth the entry fee.

Am Worlds players:

I heard from Chuck on Sunday that they might have to totally revamp the schedule and drop Upper Sandusky out of the mix due to flooding.  The course looked like Elbonia last time we were out there, so I'm not surprised.  Anyway, don't count on the current published schedules being accurate.

Kiralyn and I came in second by one throw in the Mixed Doubles.  We smoked Tiffin in the best shot, -9, and the open pro junior boys under 19 only managed -11, so we felt good about that.  We won our card in the afternoon in the alternating shot at Upper Muddusky, but someone caught us from the third card shooting a very hot +4.

It was fun.  Second is as good as either of us have ever done.  We both left a few strokes on the course, so no one is blaming the other.

Congrats to Matt "final nine" Travis for killing it at mini golf today.  A 48 is going to be really hard to beat.  Looks like Matt stole a world championship from Wiggans Jr.

I have never seen anyone throw an overhand mini shot so well!

I was honored to catch up with a couple of fellow Discontinuum Boys just after the 2010 Am Worlds Player's Meeting.  Check out The Disc Golf Guy's latest video blog on my site:

I also wanted Matt Travis in the video but he insisted on working the camera for us so thank you for that.  We also send a mad shout out to the man, the myth, the legend, Tom McManus.  We miss you here buddy!

First round scores are starting to come in...

http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=9550&year=2010&include_ratings=1#Advanced

There are two David Nelsons in the A pool, but only one of them is "our" David Nelson" and he's the one tied for first after the first round! Kenny G is tied for 4th but only two throws back. Wiggins is starting out a little slow but so much golf left to play.

Bruce Brakel shot an unofficial 1003 rated round this afternoon to move into third place in his pool after two rounds in Advanced Grand Masters. There's a smaller second pool for AGM also. Nice HOTROUND Bruce!

Hey, thanks for watching.  Kiralyn is off to a good start. She's somewhere in the middle of the Fraziers, tied with the best Frazier.

It seems like 1000 rated golf and 1-mistake golf are one and the same for me on a good challenging course.  I jacked one drive into the schule for a bogie on an easy par hole, but made all my putts inside the circle and got most of the easy deuces.  My step-through putt outside the circle was working today also.

I wore my grey felt fedora this afternoon.  It might be lucky.  I'll wear it tomorrow.

O.k., dinner and a fly mart.  I'll check in tomorrow.

Today was a lot of fun. Dave Nelson and I got to pay on the lead card together for the second round.  The highlight of my day was my ace on hole 18 the first round at Delaware state park. That $ will help pay for some tournaments!

Tear it up, everyone!

How about the flymart?  What did you guys get for player packages?  Did anyone stop by the Vibram booth?
Title: Re: 2010 WORLDS
Post by: Bruce Brakel on June 30, 2010, 12:32:12 PM
The player pack was a t-shirt, a mini, a Nuke, a Squall, and a Katana.  If you did not print out the materials on pdga.com you were kind of screwed because the TD didn't bother to put the schedules and the area maps in the player pack.  Fortunately, we always plan for half-assed Worlds and we printed out all that stuff.

The flymart was a lot less interesting than past flymarts, mostly retailers selling new discs.  Vibram was there.  The other smaller and newer manufacturers were a no-show. There were a couple of guys doing wildcat flymarting in the parking lot -- they had all the cool stuff.

I sucked today at Alum Creek.  I think I made all my putts.  I did not make many drives on the holes that don't have fair ways. You can take my score, subtract 54, and then you know how many holes don't really have a fair way.  It is a lot like Coldbrook used to be. I have had no tree love all week, but only today I really needed some.

Looks like Kiralyn and Diana are keeping it steady.  Diana is playing really well if you know that she is throwing almost all her drives with her off hand, so I thought I'd mention that.  Her surgical knee is not fully game ready so she is mostly driving righty and throwing upshots and putts lefty.

We stayed at the LaQuinta for the Illiana and I don't recommend it. The whole place had an off odor. The breakfast was sparse and not well made (hard boiled eggs were boiled to the point of becoming super ball-like). Our room was not cleaned and we were not given fresh towels on Saturday. They wound up giving us the second night free because we were not happy but I would have happily paid for a second night at a less crappy place.

Kira and Diana both moved up to 3rd after their morning rounds.  They have an afternoon round.  Kira has a semi tomorrow and Diana goes to the Final 9 if she's in the top four -- no semi.

I think I'm now in a tie for 8th going into the semis.  I played very conservative in the woods to avoid another Alum Creek.  On one 350 foot tunnel hole I threw my butter 150 off the tee and got the other 200 with a mid-range.  The advanced players rated 971 with the score I shot, but it only felt like 950.

My feet are tired.  I'm looking forward to the semis.

Good luck to the entire Illinois contingent in Cedar Lake!

This has to be by far the largest number of Illinois players in the Worlds Open field.  Out of this group of 29 players I think we are bound to see at least 1 guy finish in the top 30.  Hopefully a few more than that will cash.  Its going to be tough, but at least we have alot of experience on these courses.

Talked to Stan briefly and it sounds like he is having a fantastic time there.  He played a round with Dave at Gold today and received a free lesson.  Sounds like he's seen some unbelievable shots that I can't really imagine in my mind.  Parking Gold 8 in 2 shots, deuciing Gold 3, parking Red 8, etc....

He is indeed Dave's caddy for the week.  I think Dave was looking to find a caddy and Stan hooked up with him on Facebook and offered his services.  Watch for Stan on the Final 9 coverage  :D

...given the technicality of a lot of the holes, I'd still bet (though not a lot) that the 'old guys' Climo or Schultz can still pull out one more.

Otherwise, yeah, it might be Nikko's year.

that uses up my .02

Good times so far. Illinois has the most players here. Gonna be a fun week.

The hottest putter is going to win this event. I'm going with Anthon or Orum.

Sounds like Brett is stealing Orum's personal prediction on Terry Miller video blog.  Aren't pretty much all of the top players good putters though?  Seriously, you don't get a 1020 rating without knocking down some putts on a consistent basis.  Orum has been in 3 Final 9's previously, so its not a crazy guess.  Hard to imagine him winning it though as he's not finished higher than 5th in an NT event this year (although he was just 2 strokes out of the playoff at the Masters Cup).  Anthon has been right on the cusp of breaking through at Worlds, USDGC, and the Memorial.  I like that pick.  This Bradley Williams kid has been on fire this year.  Pretty good dark horse pick.

The flymart was yesterday.  Tomorrow is tee times on Gold.  The lead group in Open will probably tee off around 1:30pm.

I'm watching the live scoring right now for the Red course.  Doss, NIkko, and Ulibarri are all on fire.  Nikko deuced Hole 8, Ulibarri deuced Hole 10.  These guys are good!

Looking like lead card tomorrow will consist of Nikko, Ulibarri, Doss, and Schultz.

Looks like Doss had the hot round of the top 2 cards with a 47 on Red, putting him 1 back of Niikko and 2 back of Ulibarri.  Doss missed his birdies on 1 and 5 and took a bogey on 12.  I think there is a 44 out there for somebody this week.

Well I was right about that.  Anthon blew the course up with a 44.  1088.  He scooped up to the lead card.  That guy is dangerous.

Seegert in 27th!  Keep it up Brad.  The guy Stan's caddying for scooped up to 7th.  Nice work Stan!

Keith Warren coming out of the woodworks to play Worlds.  Back to back 47's today and he's in 12th.

Avery blowing up today...I'm sure its the course's fault.

Thanks for the update Stan.

I am surprised at the number of 4's I've seen on 18 Red on the top scorecards.  I would have thought that'd be a little easier 3 for these guys.

How did Feldberg bogey Hole 7?  Did he go for some crazy roller to try and birdie it?  Also, how does he attack Hole 14?

On hole 7 he threw the setup shot but babied his upshot and missed a 30 footer.  On hole 14 he played it safe to lay up shot then knifed a driver over the trees to the right to park it for a 3

I was spotting Hole 14 all day.  No deuces.  one guy in B pool threw a laser up the gut through the alley and missed his 35 foot put for duece.   couple players got into the gap and had 50+ foot putts that they missed.  Lots of players layed up. If they were at the doorway they threw an easy low upshot.  If not they then spiked over the gap if they were not at the doorway.. Brett Misjudged the wind and went OB.  He was pretty upset with himself about that shot.  One guy threw a 600 foot bomb hyzer over the trees on the right that landed inbounds about 45 ft past the basket.  He missed his putt badly but did make the 25 foot comeback to save par.   While on 14 I heard somebody say, "oh, that's sick."  I then looked towards 2 and saw Feldberg's tee shot circle around the basket and land about 2 ft away. I don't know if he had thrown a forhand or an annie. You will have to ask Stan.I don't know how Feldberg carries his bag.  He is a little guy. We all know that Stan is...not so little. The bag, with 39 discs, was plenty heavy for Stan. I asked Stan if he saw his caddy and figured he could load up the bag. He said this is what Feldberg always carries. The boy must be pretty strong.

Dave on hole 2 feldberg threw a roller which is the best play for hole number 2 and his comebacker on hole was was a 10 footer.  And at the tourney so far he threw at least 20 of the 39 discs in his bag.  Well we stuffed the bag with more towels water and etc stuff cuz of the rain that was comin but 2day it will be better a nuce day i will lose about 10 pounds frin the bag for the rest of the week lol.

Nikko was on track for about a 53 with just 5 to play, but 13 and 15 got him.  Now he's back to where he started the day, 1 back of Ulibarri.  Both shot 57's which is still smoking hot.  Doss 58 and Anthon rallied bigtime on the back 9 to shoot 59 after a terrible start.  It'll be interesting to see what the 2nd card shot.

Nikko had a tap in putt spit right back at him on #13 for a 4. Nikko wishes he had my tap in 3 both rounds >:D I just wish I had his game. All these guys have been complaining about the vine on #14. For any player throwing a Roc or Putter it's right at the height needed to get to the bucket. He drilled the vine and had to hit a huge putt to save 3 on that hole. The other 3 guys got some nice love on that hole.  On 15 he hit the guardian tree. Threw a nice upshot short and missed a putt on the bin. On #16 he got pimped by a tree in the fairway on the drive. His upshot got pimped by a tree in the fairway. He just missed the putt for 3 and took a 4. He threw a bad drive on #17 and took a 3. To finish on #18 he threw a moster roller that landed pin high in the woods. He missed that putt for 2 to finish. After the round he canned several putts from that spot. Tomorrow should be fun.

McBeth and Brinster ripped it up with 55's.  5 way tie for 4th!  Lead card will be Ulibarri, Nikko, Doss, McBeth.  2nd card Anthon, McCabe, Feldberg, Olsen.

Anybody on the 1st 2 cards sitll has a great chance to win Worlds, all within 5 shots.  I think Anthon will be happy to be back on Blue/Red tomorrow where he can just bang putts.

Seegert with another solid round, sitting in 35th.  Fanning in 43rd tied with Avery Jenkins

Also, Fritz, Strasser, and Machine Austin are all playing really good golf in the Masters field.  Barrett White is winning Masters Women.  Alot of Illinois players having some really strong showings at this event.  Congrats guys.

If you look at it based on the other top scores, he really only missed two holes that were attainable. Blue kicked my butt and those guys make it look like a deuce or die course.

Seegert with a 46 is in 36th place and will be playing tomorrow.

it'd be really interesting to see Rico's card in comparison to McCabe. McCabe deuced 18 Blue!?  :o I'm guessing it had to be a roller or a really greasy upshot that went in. Unless it's less dense than I remember.

Have there been any deuces on 6 or 10 Blue this week?

18 Blue is an incredible deuce.  I would bet it was just an airshot down the gut though.  I've seen this done at the Homie event before and I know Brett has told me he's seen 2 guys on his card deuce it during tournaments there before.  It is doable and I'm sure all those guys on the top 4 cards at Worlds are thinking deuce when they step to the tee.  Its still a solid hole.

Affter watching the Live Scoring of the top 2 cards all week, there are several holes out there on Blue which seem to be making no difference between the top Pros.  They all get 3's on 4, they all get 3's on 6.  Also, they all pretty much get 2's on 1, 16, and 17.  There is almost no point in those guys playing those 5 holes other than the fact that they do pick up strokes on lesser players (such as myself) on those types of holes.  This fact is contributing to the extremely tight bunching of scores.  Along with the fact that nobody seems to be streaking multiple hot rounds together to pull away.  Perhaps McCabe will change that tomorrow morning and seize control of the championship.  I wonder what the Final 9 holes are going to be?  Hopefully they offer more of a challenge and score separation for these guys.  Everybody likes to see close competition, but its not as much fun when they are all just getting the same scores on every hole.

I watched a few of the last open groups on Blue 18:
Schultz, Climo, Owens, Leiviska, McCabe, Rico, Brinster all deuced it.
One group had 3 of the 4 deuce.

The day Brett was talkng about Nikko he proceeded to come to Blue 15 and throw every disc in his bag to the basket! Definitely one of the best putters I've seen this week.

Blue 18 has changed a little over the years. The really cleaned the schule on the sides opening it up a little. Each round my card had one 2 on that hole. It's still a very difficult hole. Those top guys are playing a different game. #4 and #8 are in the short positions and very 2'able. A perfect round would be a 39 unless there was a throw in on  6, 10, or 14.

After the rounds today a group of 12 of us played some random draw doubles on the red course playing the same out of bounds. The winning score was a -10 and 2 groups tied at -7 for 2nd place. It's just sick that these top guys go throw up the numbers they do.

This week was a very difficult week. This is the first time that i've ever considered walking off the course. After 3 holes on red in the afternoon I blew up and started to consider it. On hole #10 I hit a tree going into the basket for an easy tap in 3. I was not very far away anyway and missed the putt badly.  I was within 8 feet of the pin on #11 for 2 and ended up taking a 4. It was flat out ugly. I have never DNF'd and glad I stuck it out. After hole #11 I packed away the putter. I finished the round putting with the eagle.

Started on hole #8 on Blue in the morning and Red #9 in the afternoon.

I just went to pdga.com to see what was going on with the semis and my virus protection alerted me that something was viral with the website and suggested that I not go there.  Is my software being overprotective or is something wrong with pdga?

whatever.  I am now in and there was no warning.  Maybe Stan is the key.  Feldberg seems relentless.

Eric McCabe with a 3 stroke lead going into the Finals. Can Feldberg catch him??

My guess would be NO!!

Rule #1 in disc golf. There is no big $ to be won in this game.

In recent years the $6000 Felberg won is the biggest payout at a worlds in the last 5.

Just got home from Worlds and it was an incredible experience I was able to watch Feldberg all week and get a lesson from him.  And also watching Ken Climo, Eric McCabe, Steve Rico, Barry Schultz, Matt Orum, Josh Anthon, Paul Ulibarri, and Nikko Locastro.   in person.  If anyone is wondering Feldberg's bag had 39 discs and he use 30 of em and that is crazy.  He(Feldberg) is also super nice guy.  He was asking if I am coming down to Cali next year for worlds but as of right now I am not sure.

Brain Cummings, Red Roc, & Crew did an awesome job this week. There were spotters on holes that really did not need a spotter. Water was everywhere on the course. Of the 5 worlds that i've been to this is the best venue for a Worlds. Lemon Lake is a pretty awesome facility which had plenty of parking, restroom facilities, and food.

I just wanted to say a couple of things about the Lemon Lake Worlds...
I heard some moaning by the pros about the gold course being a "poke and a hope".
I heard some moaning about some spotters "not being there". I heard minor moaning about lots of things...
BUT...this was my fifth worlds and I thought it ran SOOOO welll! Brian and the Red Roc crew did a great job!!!
There was COLD water everywhere, spotters everywhere, all the courses in ONE park, and food available between rounds right in the park. I told Wilbur, EBZ, Brian, Old Man and Ma Wallis, Mike Triumph, Pat McFarland, Guy Griner and any other Red Roc member that despite any whinings that they did an incredible job. To host 310 disc golfers is a logistical nightmare.
I caddied for my nephew Eric all week and got to see the best disc golfers at their best. I learned a ton and hope everyone had a good time out at Lemon. Congrats to all the Champs and anyone else that had any experience out there. It was great.

Having played the Gold layout at IOS#2, I would say it is more like a placement course. Not a poke and hope! If you know where to place your drives, you can score well. The accurate thrower will score well here, and move up 14 spots  by playing position golf. As I did at IOS#2 in the advanced field with a 66. the 3rd best score that round.
