Title: 2010 IOS #8 @ Shady Oaks, Streamwood, IL Sept 11 & 12 - The Doug Baker Memorial
Post by: stpitner on March 18, 2010, 09:44:27 PM
IOS #8 @ Shady Oaks, Streamwood, IL--9/11 & 9/12 2010

Pro C-Tier / Am B-Tier (maybe Pro-B?)

2 Rounds of probably 20 Holes

More details to come...

...and I have it on good authority that by September, we'll all be throwing from CONCRETE - and maybe some more surprises on top of that :)

You won't want to miss this event and come celebrate the life of the late Doug Baker, a fellow disc golfer.

Many thanks to Tony Battisti and the Streamwood DGU to help pull this thing together!

I met with the head of promotions with Streamwood about a week or so ago.  As soon as the weather is warm enough, the concrete tees are going in.  Tony from SDGU is making some tweaks to the course - I didn't hear the details, but I'm sure that they will be good!  Later this year new baskets will also be going in.

This tournament will be the culmination of a large fundraising effort going towards the money spent improving this course.  If even half the stuff we talked about happens, this will hands down be one of the coolest events of the year.  It WILL be a Pro-B/AM-B with $500 added cash to pro purse.  I did confirm that.  I would even highly recommend bringing spectators out to this event with you.  They do plan on having at least one if not more food vendors there, a drink station out on the course, and possibly some golf carts out helping service the needs of the players.  The event will be run in conjunction with the Streamwood Park District, and they hope this is the first year of many great tournaments.

I can confirm Scott's statement about the concrete. I got the confirmation as well that as soon as the land condition and weather permit, the concrete work will be done.

Also, Chainstars are being ordered next week!

It's about time, eh?

There is no trophy only or half in option for IOS #8.  This is partially because of the agreement set up with the Streamwood Park District.  $5 of the entry fee goes to the Streamwood Park District Foundation in support of the course renovations that took place.  That's why it's a higher price than normal.

After attending my umpteenth meeting with the Streamwood Park District and making little room towards course improvements, I ran into Marilyn on the course and we began to chat. Long story short, Marilyn wanted to help us improve Shady Oaks by donating $ for new tee pads. There will be a memorial plaque being installed by hole 1 in Doug's memory, which will have the following verbiage:

1980 — Douglas Cameron Baker  — 2006

The disc golf tee boxes are dedicated to the memory of Douglas Baker by his family. Doug was born in Streamwood and lived in Hoffman Estates until he moved to California to attend college. He was pursuing a PhD in mathematics at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He died tragically on his way home from the 2006 Regional Ultimate Frisbee Club Tournament where his team had qualified for the USA Club Championship. Whenever Doug came home to visit, he would encourage his family and friends to join him at Shady Oaks for a challenging game of disc golf. Doug was passionate about many things in life, especially mathematics, Ultimate Frisbee and disc golf. He believed in honor, integrity and fair play and lived every day with enthusiasm and passion.

So, for those of you who have been asking who Doug Baker is, I hope that answers your questions.

Without the Baker family, Shady Oaks would still have wood chip tee pads. With the very generous donation from the Baker family, we were able to update Shady Oaks Disc Golf Course. It wasn't until the PD agreed to update other areas of the course (baskets, signs, trees, etc.) that the Baker family would fund the installation of the cement tee pads.

Yes, I realize this tournament is $5 higher than normal, but the PD is trying to recoup some of their expenses that they had to shell out in improving other aspects of the course.

Marilyn,
I know this event is taking place prior to the Homie but i'd suggest coming out to this event and talking to Matt Lovasko's (Homie) mom. This is the 9th year and it's grown to be a special event. http://www.redrocdiscgolfclub.com/?p=613

Hi, this is Doug's Mom.

I just read the more recent posts. Actually, we are not going to be able to have the plaque installed by tournament time. We are still working on it. The wording will be somewhat different, but close to what we submitted to the park district. We hope to have a mock-up of the actual plaque by Saturday. We are planning to be there both Saturday and Sunday. We are looking forward to this event. We are quite excited about the opportunity to celebrate's Doug's life and his passion for anything related to throwing a disc.

I think that he would be really pleased with our decision to help upgrade the disc golf course where he played whenever he was home.

Next year we will try to be more invlolved in the planning and execution of the second annual tournament.

Bunch of things:
1) Parking - on SATURDAY, please try to park across the street at Grace Lutheran Church.  There is a basketball tournament at the community center, and we'd like to make spots available for those using that building.  On SUNDAY we have permission to park at the public works buildng (further north on bartlett rd just past hole 2).  You can also park on the other side of the park if you are starting over on that side on Oltendorf.  I think one side of the street you cannot park on, but the other was ok.

2) Bathrooms - I have confirmed that we WILL have a porta-potty available for the weekend.  In addition, since the community center will be open from 9-4 Saturday, bathrooms inside there will also be available.

3) Concessions - It looks like concessions will be open during the lunch break AND after the round.  So definitely enjoy the great prices and help support!

4) I have received confirmation on a LOT of verbal commitments of players that will be coming out to play.  I know that a lot of people are not pre-registering because there is no walk-up fee.  So don't be discouraged by the low pre-reg numbers, the turnout is going to be great!

Nothing like waiting til the last minute, but the tee signs are being installed today!

Brett: Saturday, round 1 will be to the shorter pins, round 2 will be to the longer pins. On Sunday, round 1 will be to the longer, and round 2 will be to the shorter. This way, we have to move the baskets less.

Also, 2 temp holes will be added after hole 12

Here is a map of the course:

5A will not be played, nor will 12B.

I want to thank the Streamwood guys and the park district for improving the course. It's looking awesome out there! It's amazing how much better that course is.

Thank you to Scott Pitner and the IOS crew for all the hard work. It was a great event. The rain held off and it ended up being an awesome day.

Thanks as always to Scott Pitner, and all of his helpers. Very smoothly ran tournament once again.

Gongrats to Dave Naspinski on his win. I just couldn't reel him in after his first round of 53. I did tie him in round 2 with a 54, good enough for 2nd

The concrete tees are a blessing and I think it is great that this will be a annual event. I'm glad that we were able to make this a very successful event for the Baker Family!  They really would like to continue to see these tournaments happen, and I made a couple suggestions (especially moving it earlier in the year before people go back to college to try to draw more attendance).  They are going to try to get out to the Homie to see how that family does it.  I hope that the memory of Doug can continue to live on!

Many thanks to everyone who came out and made this event a success. My family was really thrilled to be a part of this, and we are looking forward to next year. We spent the evening brainstorming some ways that we could get more involved and help to make next year's event even bigger and better.

Special thanks to Scott and his helpers for hosting this event. We appreciate all the time and effort that went into the organization.

Also many thanks to Tony and the others from the Streamwood club who prepared the course for the event and handled the logistics of moving the baskets.

This was our first experience of a disc golf tournament, and we had lots of fun.

We are trying to think of a way to include more of Doug's local friends who are not really disc golf players. Maybe we could 'host' an introductory 1 hour clinic for those who have never played either between the first and second rounds or at the end of the actual tournament.  We are ready to get involved and meet with the necessary people whenever it is time to plan for next year.

Thanks atain to everyone.

Another great tournament. I wanna thank everyone that was involved. The Baker family are some good people.

On a side note, I was wondering why the round ratings for Sunday are higher than the ones for Saturday when Saturday had the worse weather? Assuming the 1st round Sunday was in the same positions as the 2nd round on Saturday, like it was stated to be,  a 63 on Sunday is 915 rated and a 63 on Saturday is only 906 rated. Just curious...

yes, very calm wind on Saturday.  The rounds are specified to have the correct layouts, although these preliminary ratings are always just based on the round itself - it takes no consideration of the other rounds played that day or that weekend.  It takes all of the rounds shot for that day, including all scores from players that are rated 800-1000 (something like that) that have enough previously rated rounds (I think it's 8).  There's a slight adjustment for each individual player's rating, and then it calculates it all.  I don't know what they do when the go to the official ratings, but I could see them comparing the two different days ratings and adjusting slightly.

Those rounds will be close enough that they'll get averaged together by the PDGA unless Scott cheats and gives them different layout names.

I don't know how windy it was yesterday.  However, on Satruday the morning was calm. It was a somewhat wet but with little wind. In the afternoon the wind kicked up quite a bit.  It effected the flight on a lot of shots that I saw but fortunately only a few that I threw. The Sunday ratings seem 20-30 pts higher that Saturday.  I doubt it was 20-30 pts windier.

I agree with Dave. The first round the wind was very little but the tee pads were wet/muddy and slick. Several of us slipped on a few shots. The 2nd round the wind kicked up quite a bit. I'd estimate they were 12-18mph winds.

Here are the conditions for Sunday. Columns are (L toR) Date, Time, Wind (direction, sustained speed, gust speed), Visibility, Weather, Sky Conditions, and Temperature. The message board didn't care for my cut and paste so the columns got eaten...sorry.

And finally, the round ratings for my scores on Saturday compared to what the same score was rated Sunday. I didn't play particularly well but then again I didn't think I played quite that poorly.

Doesnt the high scores from the advance group also come into play like and example

Chris Dehaan a 961 player shoot a 67 round 1
Doug Buettgen a 956 player shoot a 60 round 1
Steve Slater a 947 player shoot and 63 round 1

and other player 930+ and higher shoot 60 or worse

Also 3 rec player round 1 shoot a 57,57,60

That factors also doesnt it

No and No.

The only thing that matters it the average score and average rating for those that have sufficiently established ratings to be used for the calculations. The online tool can't tell who are gators and who are new so the official ratings will be slightly different.

And for those comparing scores between days, you need to compare Sat R1 with Sun R2 and Sat R2 with Sun R1.

Stanley,

Every player's score matters equally.  It doesn't matter if they had the best round or the worst round.  If most of the players happened to play really well that particular day, then the ratings will be lower for your score.  On the other hand, if everybody blows up, your ratings will be higher.  At the end of the day, these kind of circumstances almost always equal out.

I think what Stan was trying to say is that a player or players playing signficantly off their rating will effect the ratings for the entire pool.  If I shoot a 900 round it will have the effect of depressing ratings for others.  I am rated 834.  If Brett shoots a 900 round it may have the effect of raising ratings for the rest of the pool.  He is 977.  If a handfull of open players tank rounds it will raise ratings. If a handfull of novices or rec players shoot way over their rating it will lower ratings.  The rec players with scores in the 50's would tend to lower ratings. The pro shooting a 67 would tend to raise them.  Stan gave some contrary examples that seem to me to indicate a balance with minimal effect.  Some players shot well(for them) and some shot otherwise.  The larger the pool the less the effect of an individual player or handful of players. In a smaller pool, such as IOS #8 it could have some effect.

Feel free to check the ratings again.  I found an error with one of the Open players where it said they were about an 825 rated player when they were really around 940.  whoops.  So I corrected the PDGA number, and now all of the Saturday ratings have gone up about 2-4 points per round.  Keep in mind that these are all preliminary ratings, not final.  But now the difference between Saturday/Sunday is slightly closer.  Keep in mind that Saturday's layout was A/B for the rounds and Sunday B/A.
