IOS #8 @ Shady Oaks, Streamwood, IL--9/11 & 9/12 2010

Pro C-Tier / Am B-Tier (maybe Pro-B?)

2 Rounds of probably 20 Holes

More details to come...

...and I have it on good authority that by September, we'll all be throwing from CONCRETE - and maybe some more surprises on top of that :)

You won't want to miss this event and come celebrate the life of the late Doug Baker, a fellow disc golfer.

Many thanks to Tony Battisti and the Streamwood DGU to help pull this thing together!

I met with the head of promotions with Streamwood about a week or so ago.  As soon as the weather is warm enough, the concrete tees are going in.  Tony from SDGU is making some tweaks to the course - I didn't hear the details, but I'm sure that they will be good!  Later this year new baskets will also be going in.

This tournament will be the culmination of a large fundraising effort going towards the money spent improving this course.  If even half the stuff we talked about happens, this will hands down be one of the coolest events of the year.  It WILL be a Pro-B/AM-B with $500 added cash to pro purse.  I did confirm that.  I would even highly recommend bringing spectators out to this event with you.  They do plan on having at least one if not more food vendors there, a drink station out on the course, and possibly some golf carts out helping service the needs of the players.  The event will be run in conjunction with the Streamwood Park District, and they hope this is the first year of many great tournaments.

I can confirm Scott's statement about the concrete. I got the confirmation as well that as soon as the land condition and weather permit, the concrete work will be done.

Also, Chainstars are being ordered next week!

It's about time, eh?

I see that the entry fee for this IOS is $35. Two questions: a) is there a trophy-only option?

and the 2nd question?

stpitner

There is no trophy only or half in option for IOS #8.  This is partially because of the agreement set up with the Streamwood Park District.  $5 of the entry fee goes to the Streamwood Park District Foundation in support of the course renovations that took place.  That's why it's a higher price than normal.

Marilyn Baker

Hello,
I am Doug Baker's mother. I would like to know how my family can be involved or help with this tribute to Doug. Thanks, Marilyn

WkeBrd3

After attending my umpteenth meeting with the Streamwood Park District and making little room towards course improvements, I ran into Marilyn on the course and we began to chat. Long story short, Marilyn wanted to help us improve Shady Oaks by donating $ for new tee pads. There will be a memorial plaque being installed by hole 1 in Doug's memory, which will have the following verbiage:

1980 — Douglas Cameron Baker  — 2006

The disc golf tee boxes are dedicated to the memory of Douglas Baker by his family. Doug was born in Streamwood and lived in Hoffman Estates until he moved to California to attend college. He was pursuing a PhD in mathematics at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He died tragically on his way home from the 2006 Regional Ultimate Frisbee Club Tournament where his team had qualified for the USA Club Championship. Whenever Doug came home to visit, he would encourage his family and friends to join him at Shady Oaks for a challenging game of disc golf. Doug was passionate about many things in life, especially mathematics, Ultimate Frisbee and disc golf. He believed in honor, integrity and fair play and lived every day with enthusiasm and passion.

So, for those of you who have been asking who Doug Baker is, I hope that answers your questions.

Without the Baker family, Shady Oaks would still have wood chip tee pads. With the very generous donation from the Baker family, we were able to update Shady Oaks Disc Golf Course. It wasn't until the PD agreed to update other areas of the course (baskets, signs, trees, etc.) that the Baker family would fund the installation of the cement tee pads.

Yes, I realize this tournament is $5 higher than normal, but the PD is trying to recoup some of their expenses that they had to shell out in improving other aspects of the course.

Thanks for that info. It's a great way to remember/honor someone. The course is looking as good as i've ever seen it. I'm looking forward to playing.

Marilyn,
I know this event is taking place prior to the Homie but i'd suggest coming out to this event and talking to Matt Lovasko's (Homie) mom. This is the 9th year and it's grown to be a special event. http://www.redrocdiscgolfclub.com/?p=613
