Hi, I'm new to disc golf and the forum. I'm looking in to making myself my own disc golf basket to save some money. Just wondering if anybody has ever done it before. Any tips are greatly appreciated

A few of us have made DIY's in the past... never of metal, usually involving large flower pots & the like.

For $100 you can get a skill shot, a worthy investment many will say...
Don't forget your towel!

Adrian Sr. has the sweetest homemade basket made from a chrome semitruck rim.  I'm sure there is a pic of it somewhere on the site.  or if you ask him I'm sure he will bring it to an event...

Here's my basket ... it's made from HDF, hi density fiberboard ... it's got 4 coats of Spar Varnish on it.  I drew up the plans in 3D in AutoCAD and then proceeded to do the labor.  I've got about $60 in chains and $35 in wood.  I couldn't see it lasting on a pole so I designed it to be a hanging basket.  I've had it almost 3 years now and it's still in good shape.  Will it stand the test of time and abuse ... not sure, but so far my son and I use it along with the 4 other baskets we have set up in our "home course".

I made a basket with a kid I mentored for his alternative school to use.  I'll try to get some pics of it, but basically I got a 55 plastic drum ($6) cut the top and bottom off.  Cut a hole in the bottom, basket and placed it over an old portable basket ball hoop pole (free)  We used a toilet flange to attach the top of the drum, chain assembly to the pole, a perfect fit ;D.  We drilled holes in the top and used plastic cable ties to attach the chains to the top.  It's pretty ghetto but the kids love playing Disc Golf on it.

Our secret course in northern Michigan has homemade tire and chain baskets.  For what they spent on them, [because chain is expensive], you could almost get a Skillshot.

a little reminiscent of WaterWorks in Des Moines, although those had more chains and were actually professionally made, I think.
