Bike club meeting that night.  Can't be there.  I'll vote yes to the even numbered items on the agenda, no to the odd ones and abstain from everything else.

Don't forget about the club meeting Tuesday night. Hope to see you there.

Tags and membership in 2007

We will be holding a Bag Tag design contest for next year's tag, just like we did last year.  Anybody can submit a design to Mirth.  Submissions should be made by Oct 31st.  We will then post the designs anonymously and allow all club members to vote on what the design will be for the 2007 Bag Tag.  Tags will leather again, and can be in a circle shape, shield shape, or rectangle.Brett will post the specifics soon.

Club Elections
Elections for 2007 Club Officer positions will be held at the December Club Meeting.  Nominations for officers will be due before the December meeting.  Positions are President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary.

Club Invite 2006 Recap

Event was a success drawing 41 players to Bevier Park.  See the results http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=6157#Open

We talked about running the event next year.  Some thought maybe it should be on a weekend instead of a Friday in order to draw more players.  However, it will be difficult to find a weekend in the summer in which somebody wants to run the event.

Bevier Expansion
Creation of holes across McAree Street is underway by the Waukegan Park District.  The course will be 18 holes once the construction is complete.

League update

We discussed whether we want to continue running leagues on Sundays at Bevier all year round.  It is difficult to find people to run the leagues during the summer when many are busy.  Possibly leagues will be moved to Warren Township on Wednesday nights during the summer next year as Brett said he may be willing to run this league. Mirth said he would make sure Sundays are covered all year. Please volunteer to be a sub to run league.

Lake County FP Update
Tom McManus shared contact information for LCFP Board Member Pam Newton.  Her email is pnewton@pyro.net.  Feel free to email her with your request the the LCFP install a disc golf course. There have been several articles in the newspaper about disc golf. Please e-mail the LCFPD.

Club Challenge

We discussed a possible inter-club challenge with other area clubs (Fox Valley, Joliet, Quad Cities, etc..).  The first step would be to find out if there is interest with other clubs and what would be a good location.  Tom McManus expressed interest in organizing the event if there is enough interest.

Web Server

We may have to start paying for the website (currently Mirth allows us to have it for free through his work).  It could run us around 10-15 bucks per month.

Other

Widdershins-> Mirth is thinking about running this event again. He's deciding what he wants to do and will have the information out soon. It might be a glow tourney.

If anyone can get me the numbers of how much bandwidth this website uses I may be able to help out with that portion. If nothing else I can help find something cheaper than $10-15 that will be more than enough. Feel free to private message me this sort of information.

Fox Valley would be interested.

As someone mentioned earlier, with the firepit at Jericho Lake, the Aurora course would make for a good venue (if this were going to take place over the winter months).

There is action out there all year round.

If you are interested in having a course within the Lake County Forest Preserve, please send Pam an email voicing your support. Pam is a board member of the Lake County Forest Preserve and she is a strong supporter of disc golf. Any email that she receives, she can use as evidence that the community does support disc golf. The following is a copy of the letter that I sent to Pam.  I did borrow loosely from David Barish.  Feel free to use excerpts from this letter.

Dear Pam,

With the exception of two years after college, I am a life long resident of Lake County Illinois.  I grew up in Gurnee and along with my wife have a residence in Providence Village in Gurnee.  I use the Lake County Forest Preserve to ride on the bike trails; mainly the Des Plaines River Trail and I have also used the McClory Trail.  I also partake in activities at Independence Grove.

My reason for writing is to voice my support for disc golf within the Lake County Forest Preserve.  Disc Golf is a positive activity from a community, health and environmental standpoint. Disc golf is a game enjoyed by men, women and children.  As long as you can walk you can play disc golf.  We all know that walking is a healthy activity and disc golf is throwing a disc, walking to pick it up, and throwing it again until it lands in an assigned location.  The game makes a great activity for families.  I see many families on courses around the area.

There has been a question of designating a portion of the Forest Preserve property for a specific activity.  I think that this threshold has already been crossed.  There are a number of ball golf courses on Forest Preserve properties; there are also portions of parks designated for dog walking.  Also, I do not believe that the Forest Preserve will receive a fair representation of disc golf by visiting the local courses.  In order to have a better understanding of how disc golf can blend in with the local flora and fauna, good courses to visit would be Token Creek Park just outside of Madison, and any number of courses in Des Moines, including Ewing Park and Grandview Park.

Disc golf is a green sport.  There are no gas carts.  The area is normally left in the same condition as it was found.  The rules of disc golf do not allow participants from moving items between the disc and the target to make an easier shot.  If a branch is in the way, it should not be disturbed.  No motors or machines interrupt the quiet of the forest.  In general, disc golfers are more mindful of their trash than other users. One of the mottos of the disc golfer is, "leave the course cleaner than you found it."

A championship style course would provide a greater benefit than a normal course.  There is not a championship course within a hundred of miles of Lake County.  This would be a destination that would bring players and their wallets to the local area. Disc golf is a growing sport and Lake County has an opportunity to be there at the outset.  Further, local and regional players will flock to such a course.

Please consider bringing a championship course to the Lake County Forest Preserve. The Forest Preserve has a fine opportunity to serve the residents of Lake County by installing a course within the boundaries of one of the Forest Preserve Properties.  Thank you.

Sincerely,

Tom McManus

GREAT LETTER TOM!!!!
I NEED TO START WORKING ON MINE

Tom

Thanks for the e-mail address.  I searched my sent mail and found the letter that I had forwarded to you.  I sent it to Ms. Newton.  Hopefully this can spur something.

I didn't include it but had a fantasy come to mind as I was pasting the letter into a new message-- 2016 Olympics are in Chicago.  There are no more demonstration sports but PDGA w/ a local TD puts on a major in Lake County at the same time.  (I know this could be a hotel space disaster but hey, this is a fantasy) We get a little local fanfare and we get a few of the international cameras to check out the action.  Who knows, maybe one of our current young guns wins that major.

if its a fantasy then why not just make disc golf part of the games....and also I'll be banging Jessica Alba in 2016.

seroiusly, look at some of the olympic games.  they are a joke.  if the biathlon or synchronized swimming or that wierd skiing thing where they jump up and twirl around a bunch of times can be in the games then anything has a chance
