We had database problems yesterday afternoon spanning into this morning. There was a time when I thought we were going to lose all posts on the board but I was able to save them.

Okay, apparently the domain registrar that handles discontinuum.org among other domains I have registered is having issues today.
Some folks aren't able to get to the site, while others may expierence slowness & other weirdness.

Sorry about that peoples. This one's not my fault! :)

yeah, maybe. mydomain was around before godaddy which is why they're handling all my domains.

Yea change is hard to do when you're comfortable. In 6 or 7 years of my being on the web I have not once had a problem at the domain level and I've always used GoDaddy. Plus there are always coupons available to save a few bucks.

I've been tempted to move mine. Last month thy changed the IP address of both of NS authorities for my domain at the same time essentially taking my site down for the three days until the DNS propagation finished. What a pain. If they had moved one and then the other it would have been painless. ARgh. I guess at $5/mo you get what you pay for.

To anybody able to read this post @ the time it was posted, consider yourself lucky. Apparently folks whose local DNS cache expired the record for my server late this morning are unable to get on...

That is also why I use hostnames for the nameservers intead of IP addresses. That way the IP address can change as often as they need to do it and it still points to the right spot. I'd be happy to share more info on godaddy and the non-godaddy hosting platform I use. Over 99.5% uptime and never a problem with anything DNS related.

Yea Mike $5 a month is pretty cheap. I have good deals, but it's still a few more dollars per month. With about 200 GB of storage and 2 TB of monthly bandwidth I don't have much to complain about though.

where do you go thru, dreamhost?

mirth

oh, and my current registrar confirms the problem to be 3 of their 4 main nameservers are offline & the 4th is sometimes answering queries.

phew, looks like I'm back now.  I was able to get some stuff to come up at www.discontinuum.org/forums, but the graphics weren't working.  Now the default (without the www) seems to be working for me. yay :)

mirth if you decide to that PM me and I can get you those coupon codes.

As for the domain name stuff, most companies throw an extra year onto the registration along with the transfer, so even if you transfer twice you aren't really hurting yourself.
