One FINAL event of the 2006 season.  Here you can earn PDGA points, contribute to your rating, and be a part of history.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 30th
This is the first event ever being held at the brand new  Dineen Disc Golf Course.  Thanks to a local enthusiast, you can view some  pictures  of the course.

Ideally I'd to set up the course in one of four ways.  All short pins, all long pins, alternating short / long with holes 1-18, or alternating long / short 1-18.  I'm not sure what is all doable just yet but I'll see what I can get done.  (With regards to time we will almost for sure not be playing ALL of the pins in ALL of the long positions.)

The recent snowfall has melted considerably but who knows what we'll have 3 weeks from now.  The tees should be great regardless of the snow cover.

Like always, registration is available either online or via snail-mail.     Online Registration is available.  If you need my address just shoot me an e-mail or give me a call and I'll gladly provide it.

Correct.

I apologize for missing that.  I did that on the PDGA board then went back to update it.  As you can see above I have updated it there too.

Tom - how is that trophy?  I can't take any credit for that but it is pretty sweet.

Also, I'm going to try something a little different.  Make the Rec division $15 and then give away a $15 player pack and just have trophies.  Anyone have thoughts on that?

Sounds like a "trophy-only" option. They're basically playing for free with a chance to win a trophy. I like the idea.

The trophies are very sweet.  Also the sweatshirts were an added bonus.  The course is great, overall a very good day.  Rec trophy only would be a nice option for Dineen.

Terry,

As a not too long ago and still really close (ratings-wise) Rec player, I can say that I like a trophy-only style entry fee. However, you should realize that there are some Rec players who are already accostomed to the merchastravaganza system and will be dissapointed that there are no prizes. I think as long as you advertize it in advance it is fine, but like we've talked about in the past, you can't run a tournament without someone complaining about something. It is the nature of the beast.

So what is it going to take to get you guys to come up for this event?

I'll try to cater to you as best as possible but I'll need some feedback.  As you already know, this is CERTAINLY going to be your last chance to earn any points toward the 2007 Am or Pro Worlds.  Heck, I'm the only game in town that's sanctioned that weekend in the entire country!

I'm open to suggestions or ideas but let's get a full field up here!

what would bring people?  trophy only for all divisions, not just rec would be nice.  Your event is right in the middle of the holidays..  most people don't have extra cash with all the traveling they do.
Let us hope that the whores of evil no longer loiter on the doorsteps of your path beckoning you into the brothel of despair, and that here and after may present them with the most rigid manistfestation of a firm and manly will.

**Whoops - I thought this was a Private Message I was answering but I guess not.  No biggie, that just means more feedback from MORE people**

Trophy only is certainly a good idea and I'm not going to rule it out.  My only concern is for people (mainly from Wisconsin) not understanding the concept.

I don't know if you agree or not but I could see this happening:

25 Advanced Players sign up.
15 of them just so happen to do "Trophy Only"

Every advanced person that 'cashes' throws up a MAJOR complaint and uproar (at least as large as the one I just dealt with) because they aren't getting gobs and gobs of merchandise for placing well.

Now I'm not saying this WILL - but I'm saying it easily COULD.  Then it becomes a matter of some people hating me even more because they will feel like I somehow slighted them (when in reality I am just trying to please the masses).

Again - I'm more than willing to try it out - I'm just worried about straying away from 'the norm' and catching even MORE shit!

Thoughts?

* My example was the Advanced division but I think it would remain the same for any given division (including pro)

You answered yourself...."I'm more than willing to try it out." Why not try it out? If you haven't created the flyer yet, mention it on the flyer. Players should be able to understand that not everyone paid the same amount of money to play; I think to some it might feel like a chance to earn a "prizing" spot because three people above played trophy only. Even though I've never played trophy-only before I know Carla loves the option available to her in the IOS events. The only better deal than paying $15 and getting a $15 coupon is getting a coupon, a trophy and a CTP prize (I know other divisions might cost more).

Try it, you might like it  ;D

I think that one of the new things that you are doing, handing out a flyer with OB, rules, etc... is a great idea.  I really didn't think about you catering to the hearing impaired players, that is was just a good idea for all players.  It cuts back on the questions  and moves the players meeting along.

Bruce Brakel

Trophy-only affects the number who finish in the prizes, but it does not affect the amount of the prizes that much.  Here, I ran these on the 2006 PDGA calculator [which is currently not navigable on the website but can be found with a google search limited to pdga.com]:

40 player payout based on 20 per player going to prizes

$70

10 player payout based on 20 per player going to prizes

I think that's why there are no complaints about trophy-only at the IOS tournaments, except from a couple of idiot pros.

Unfortunately, I am out of town on the 30th (well not really unfortunately, it will be good to get away for a few days.) If I was here, Trophy Only would likely get me up to Milwaukee regardless of the weather.

SERG

The IOS committee can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the trophy-only option has given players a "hey, maybe I'll play Pro and see how I do against those guys" attitutude. This will increase your Pro pool, at least for a day. It was cheaper to play trophy-only Pro than to play trohpy-only AM. Nearly 1/3 of Carla's tournaments were in Pro Women because of the trophy-only option.

For those who don't read/haven't read the PDGA site with the same topic:

I think if you do a $20 entry fee for a guaranteed $15 payout, you're pretty much just telling rec players to stay home.  On the other hand, Kelsey came in first, got a $6 payout and a $10 player pack on a $15 entry fee, so maybe it's like you're always just telling the rec players to stay home.

I started doing the trophy-only option as a way of guaranteeing for the non-competitive player a good value entry fee.  Once competitive players realized that our full fee entry fees were an even better value entry fees, pretty much only Am 4s and players who want to play up have been taking the TO.

I have two and a half course installation projects going here in Michigan so I'm done travelling for tournaments for a while, except the IOS.  Suddenly the local State Recreation areas want to get into disc golf.  For years it has been outside their mission statement, which was more oriented towards *enjoying nature while killing the meaty edible parts.*  Now that their parks are becoming surrounded by exurbia, they are segueing into family recreation.  And the golf course at Byron is totally Jeckyl and Hyde for disc golf.  Are they for or against today?  Well is it an even numbered day or an odd numbered day?

Trophies are on order!  The only problem is that the pre-registration  is a little light right now.  I don't want to order trophies if we aren't going to have a division but I don't want to skip ordering trophies if we are going to have 10 people there.  I hope to see more pre-registrations so I can get the right amount of trophies made up!

Thanks guys!

Event Registration information

Also if you wish to participate as a TROPHY ONLY player you may do so by paying HALF of the posted entry fee that is shown online.  So that would break down like such:  Rec $10, Int $15, Adv W $15, Adv M $15, Adv $20, Pro M $20, Open $25.  CONTACT me if you wish to do this and I'll arrange for it.

Am player's will receive a player's pack and the chance to win a trophy.  Pro M and Open will only be playing for a trophy in their respective division.

QuoteDue to the recent heat wave in Wisconsin it looks like we will have a pretty snow-less event at the Dineen course in 2 weeks.  I was out there last week and the ground was wet but there was virtually no snow.  I also just checked the weather forecast and for the next 10 days we are not scheduled to have any snow.  It's even supposed to get up near 50 this week!

If the weather is warm and the course doesn't have snow I think we are going to see a ton of people at this event.  Please feel free to mail in your entries (still PLENTY of time for that) or go online and get it done quickly and easily.  I will also let people know that I'm going to start offering additional rewards/incentives for the people that do choose to register via www.takeflighttoday.com.

Get signed up today because otherwise it will be a mad dash at the last minute and then someone gets shut out or upset!  Thanks!

High of 42, only 10% chance of rain.  No snow on the ground.  Great conditions for this time of year.
