Which one would you choose?

PS3
XBox 360
Neither

So, I've been thinking about picking up a new gaming system (it's time to replace the Dreamcast). I pretty much have my mind made up, however, I'd like to hear what some of you have to say about these.

I guess it all depends on gaming preference & how much $ is buring a hole in your pocket.

Obviously the PS3 is more $, but the Playstation systems have always had a great amount of games.

XBox 360 is less, but since it came out I really haven't been "wowed" by any of the games.

Personally I'm just going to wait it out, play the '07 disc golf season, and see who's still standing next fall.

if i was buying anything i'd go with PS3 without a doubt.  playstation has always been better.

unless you really have a hole burning in your pocket why not wait ~12 months for when prices begin to drop?

you forgot the wii in your poll, have heard interesting things about it....

From what I hear and read, the PS3 won't be dropping in price anytime soon.

I left the WII out intentionally.

I've posted this in other forums and it seems the majority is recommending the 360...

I say the PS3 is worth is based solely on the Blu-Ray component alone.  Do you plan on playing the systems on a HD tv?  If so, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that you have to buy an additional component to the XBox 360 to get it to play the higher resolution HD (1080i or 1080p or whatever it is).

Backwards compatibility is one of the key factors as to why I will eventually pick up a PS3.  I know that Xbox keeps adding on some more games that are backwards compatible, although I haven't heard how well those games perform in the 360 (I've heard of numerous bugs).  Since I've owned the PS1 and PS2, I'd love to be able to continue to play those in a PS3.

They always say the price won't drop for a while, and then they usually do anyway.  Maybe not as much next Christmas time, but the year after that it wouldn't surprise me at all if it drops by $100.  Don't expect to be able to go out and buy a PS3 for $130 even in maybe 5 years like you can with a PS2 right now though (unless the PS3 bombs which I do not expect to see happening).

It all comes down to "The Killer App".  What game is going to be key (or the keys) to the system that make you just want to buy it.  XBox was Halo, and only Halo.  PS2 had the benefits of multiples (multiple Final Fantasy games, Gran Turismo, etc).  Perhaps you will want to wait a year and see what games come out for the PS3?  It will take a little bit of time for game makers to learn more about the system and figure out how to get the most out of the game, but that's the case for any system.

This is why I want a PS3 right here:

I'll just have to wait a little while before it comes out :) (oh and maybe get something better than a 19" tv to enjoy my gaming experience on lol)

Exactly Scott! I house sat for a friend and played his Xbox when I did it, and beat Halo 1 & 2 in 1 week. There just weren't enough good games for the Xbox for me to consider it.

The backwards compatability is also key. My best friend & I jammed out some Twisted Metal 2 the other day, I still LOVE that game!

Niether.  Buying a Wii for half the price.  If I had to pick between the two I would take a PS3 though.

the other critical component for a PS3 is the PS2 to PS3 cable converter so that you can continue to rock out to Guitar Hero ;D  I just received Guitar Hero 2 (with a guitar to have two now) for Christmas, awesome game :) :)

Now you can have a friend over & do the 80's syncrhronized head banging & guitar swinging!

Guitar Hero is fricken awesome. I'm in this dilema since my GF bought me a used ps2 and guitar hero for xmas because she knows I love that game. I've been waiting to decide on the 360 or PS3 for a year now, but since I don't have any PS2 games or an HD TV, I think the 360 is going to be a better decision for me. They just need to hurry up and get GH out for 360! (or is it out?)

i played that guitar hero game quite a bit over xmas break.  i thought it was pretty hilarious and kind of addicting.  we had the team thing rolling on it with 2 guitars.  my cousin plays that thing on expert and will only miss like 3 or 4 notes on any of the songs, its ridiculous.

all xbox 360 games are in HD and if you dont have a hd tv it looks like crap and its hard to read words on the screen. i just got me a ps3 today but had no money left to get any new games but it plays my ps2 games flawlessly

This is not entirely true. I have only played one game (Gun) where the words were hard to read and that game didn't really have that much text on screen to read anyway.

Sony is having over-heating & backwards compatible issues? Along with 720p not upconverting to 1080i or 1080p. What I felt should be a standard practice is a huge flaw with the current revision of the PS3 software. Here is the best example I can give: If you have the PS3 set to display at 1080p and it works fine for Blu-Ray movies and the PS3 dashboard but once you put in Resistance: Fall of Man (a 720p native game), the PS3 automatically down converts to 480p instead of 720p or up converting to 1080i or 1080p. The current fix for this is to set your PS3 to 720p but I feel this is unacceptable since the Xbox 360 doesnt have this issue with upconverting.  Not even providing component video cables? No rumble in the controllers, a sub par online system, and all this after they laughed at M$ for not doing BC right, not doing HD right, for having heating issues?

Also, if you intend on doing any online gaming, updates, demo downloads, etc. xbox live is the best there is.  If you haven't seen a 360 and the online marketplace you really don't know what you are missing.

IMO XBOX 360 > PS3 and here are some articles:

And after all this just look at the library.  You can get way more games and a lot of the launch titles are now a lot cheaper and are still great games.

OK, have to weigh in on this one.  I work with a bunch of guys who have both systems and from their feedback, the 360 wins in many areas.  Many more games available, bc is working fine, online play is superior, graphics are better, game play is smoother, costs less.  It seems the only people who are fighting for the PS3 in this race have never had an Xbox and are just your brand loyal playstation guys (there are playstation guys out there the would fight to the death to defend the PS3, but when you talk to them, they've never even played an Xbox let alone owned one).  The blu ray player in the PS3 is not all that great (even the $1300 Pioneer BR player isn't all that great, how can the $200 PS3 version be very good) and it's nice that Xbox lets you buy the HD DVD if you want but don't force you to buy it.  I've seen the 360 on analog TVs and it looks fine if the output resolution settings are set correctly (btw, if you're gonna spend 4-600 dollars on a game system whose major selling point is HD games, pony up the dough to get an HD set IMHO - you can get a 30" HD tube set for around $600 these days).  I don't own either system, but have played both quite a bit and will be buying a 360 soon (I too have been hoping for a price drop, but it ain't gonna happen any time soon according to interviews with MS and Sony execs).  Both systems were awesome when I've played them and neither is a waste of money, but after a lot of testing, I'm going Xbox.
That kid is back on the escalator!!!

Wow, younk and disc have brought up some good points. I guess I was a "fanboy" and had my heart (and money) set on a PS3, but, after a few days of (not working and) research, I've decided to get the 360 (and not because of the last two posts).

Or you could try to win one at the Ice Bowl in Aurora. I heard a Playstation was going to be given away as one of the prizes. I'll doublecheck that, but I'm pretty sure it's true. If you're lucky you could walk away with that and a $300 basket.

{Correction: It's a PS1, not 3.}

A friend of mine got a PS3 this past weekend & we've been playing it a bunch. Mainly Resistance of Man. The online is sweet, and not paying a monthly fee vs. Xbox live is great. Graphics look great and I'm going to check out another friend's Xbox this coming weekend, so I'll give it the comparison test.
