I heard at lunch time that the Bears officially announced that Rex will be the back-up QB this week.

Steve Dahl's thought of the day: "As of today, Olin Kreutz now has something Griese being inserted between his legs."

wonder how long he's been thinking about what comment he was going to make when the announcement made it official....

Griese for a last name in football is not a good last name.  It just sounds like a fumble waiting to happen.  It's similar to some of the players in baseball that's it's like... do I really want him playing on my team?  Examples of this: relief pitcher Ed Balfour, and seattle closer J.J. Putz (I know he says it's pronounce poots).  There were a bunch more, but I can't remember them at the moment.

What if he's good at evading the sack? Then one could say he lives up to his name....

Kramer was the best of those, but he had Curtis Conway to throw to which is a far better receiver than anybody we have right now.  I'm not sure how our WR seem to have taken such a big step backward from last year.

P.S. you should have included Harbaugh on that list.

P.S.S.  Former Pirates starter Bob Walk had a pretty bad name.

P.S.S.S.  Spuds, you are on crack.  The Rex Man sucks and you don't get 3 seasons to prove yourself as a starting QB in the NFL, so somebody else gets a chance.  Whether we think Griese or Orton will be good is irrelevant, we KNOW Rex sucks because he has gotten more than one chance, so lets find out if our backups can do any better leading this offense.

For the record, I kind of doubt this QB change is going to help anything, but it will be nice to know for sure.

Here is the Bears October Collection.  I think four of these are Innova.

2 picks inside the 10-yard line = painful.  Time to start chanting Orton?  Tough loss Bears fans.  I couldn't believe the onside kick was returned for a TD, that's just like a slap in the face.

Go Cubbies, or be a packers fan, that's cool too!

I think if we had a better quarterback, he'd be in the game by now. The coaches all watch the practices and preseason and then they put their best team on the field.

hmm...what to do now?

What they should do, is give griese another game, maybe 2, and if they are still playing poorly, they should either A) give the job back to Grossman, to see if he can perform, or B) give the job to Orton, and see what he can do.  There is no reason to continue to start Griese if they still stink.  Grossman is gone, and if Orton sucks, they have to start at square 1 next year.  So hopefully out of the 3 QB's they have, they can figure something out so they can compete next year.

i say we travel back in time and draft a QB in last year's draft such as Kolb and we use this season to develop him for the future.

The Lions suck year after year and they are always trying to solve the quarterback problem.  The Bears have been great without a good quarterback.  The quarterback isn't the problem.

Exactly, it's the running game. There has been no smash mouth football & Benson goes down with the initial hit.

I think the problem is the O-Line and the play calling.  Benson can't break away from every tackle.  When the line is letting guys through and they are hitting him in the backfield, there is only so much he can do.  Not even the almighty Thomas Jones could run with what the line is giving them this year

I think the bears should continue to use wolfe and petersen.  Combined they seem to be what thomas and benson were last year.  And look at how good benson was running after he was taken out after a few series.  He needs a fire lit under his backside to show that we still don't have to play him.  Make him want to earn playing time instead of being given it for nothing.

There is nowhere to run for the RB's if you actually watch the game.  Benson gets initial contact in the backfield half the time.  I'm sure Brett is thinking we'd be 4-0 if we had Thomas Jones' 3.4 per carry he's getting with the Jets instead of Benson's 3.2 per carry   :D

We suck at every offensive position so lets not blame anybody more than the next guy.  I'm not going to be content with a piece of crap QB though even if we have had success with them before.  Thats just ludicrous.

You are 100% correct on all points here.  I think the difference in the Packers game was that the offensive line was actually  starting to move some people around, & protect the QB.  The game is won & lost in the trenches.
I'm afraid Cedric Benson is looking more like Rashaam Salam than he is Anthony Thomas.  And Anthony Thomas is bad.

Both games Beson has rushed 20+ times we have won. All this talk about Grossman and Griese managing a game is running the ball. If the Bears would committ to running the ball Grossman might still be in there and we might be 4-1 at this point.

The Thomas Jones #'s on the Jets can be thrown out the window. He proved he could move the ball in Chi. He could catch the ball out of the backfield and could avoid inital contact. Both are something Benson has not done yet.

I don't think Benson has been given the chance to show he can avoid initial contact yet.  The O-line has blocked terribly for the running game so far this year.  The only thing I didn't like about Benson so far this year is 1, the fumbles, but from what I've heard he doesn't fumble much, so that could be a fluke, and one of his fumbles hit the helmet of another player dead on, I doubt anyone holds onto that.  And the running out of bounce instead of taking a hit.  Benson has been successful at catching the ball out of the backfield so far this year.

If Jones proved he could move the ball in Chicago last year, than so did Benson, as they averaged pretty much the same Yards Per Carry, I believe it was like 3.6 to 3.5.  I do agree, the Bears need to run the ball to be successful.  They don't have a Brett Favre or Payton Manning type QB where they can do everything, never have.  Benson has rushed 20+ times 3 times in his career, and the Bears are 3-0 in those games, Coincidence?
