In order for them to return, they would have been on TV to begin with, which they haven't been for as long as I can remember.

Gordie Howe was in my court room this morning.  He was suing his neighbor to get him to stop taking 17,000 pictures of his house everyday.  I'm just guessing at 17,000.  It was two cameras taking one picture each every second.  Krupicka will do the math.  His neighbor was obsessed with the fact that Gordie Howe was running his business out of his home, contrary to the subdivision bylaws.  So he was trying to get proof.

Gordie's business is being Gordie Howe.  He still gets paid to do appearances.  He's still autographing and selling hockey stuff.

You're off by an order of magnitude. (It's around 170,000)

Wirtz was the reason the Blackhawks weren't on TV. He had the philosophy that if there were seats open that he could get money on, you had to buy those to watch the game. Local games on TV was only overflow seating to him. Even then, I think they would only have been on cable.

Its hard to  evaluate the Hawks and TV based on now.  Now nobody cares.  I hate to disparage the decesased but can't figure out any other reason.  When I was a kid and going on until the early 90's this proud franchise was a big deal in this town. Away games were televised.  People watched them.  Home games were not televised because Dollar Bill thought that doing so would keep the seats empty. At the time the house was full and was rockin'.  Seats are now empty because the franchise has become a joke.  Kids do not have a feeling for the team because they are not on TV very much and they don't bug their parents to take them to a game. They don't care.  I still have an indian head replica jersey and hope to get a chance to wear it soon.  Who knows, hockey may be back.  I hope so.  It used to be a lot of fun to go to Hawks games.

Gordie's neighbor seems like the type of wad who would give Bruce a hard time for having so much merch in his garage or would call the cops if the girls ran a lemondade stand.

Morning rant over, back to work...

I love making fun of typos - this one's appropriate since the PA was so freaking LOUD at the only Wolves game I've been to.
thanks,

Here is a clip of action in the stands during a Moscow VS St. Petersburg game.  It makes me long for the good old days in Chicago Stadium.

http://ru.youtube.com/watch?v=kilfWCbLd6o

I have no idea why a video of a hockey riot reminded me of Chicago Stadium, but it does.  Chicago Stadium, The Olympia in Detroit, Maple Leaf Garden, the Arena in St. Louis...all those small, dirty, cramped places were better for hockey back in the Smyth/Norris Division days.  The United Center is great for the flashy NBA, but hockey looses something in a nice big clean arena.

Not to mention hockey looses something when you play Columbus and Nashville 40,000 times a year and Toronto once every couple of years.  When we played Detroit, Toronto, Minnesota and St. Louis and the division standings meant playoff spots...you could really build up a good hatred of those other teams in your division.  Now I'm not even sure I'd recognize the Blue Jackets jerseys.  It would help if the game were on TV every once in a while.

Oh well, sorry for reviving the Hockey thread during an eight-game loosing streak.  Nashville is the last team we beat, and we get another shot at them tonight.  There is some good young talent on he Blackhawks, they are just obviously not quite ready for prime time.   The news on Toews knee seems encouraging that he will be OK when he gets back.

Did anybody see that highlight of the dude getting his throat slashed by that dude's skate last night in the NHL?

That is enough to make me never want to watch hockey again, which I wasn't going to do anyway.  That was disgusting.

Oh, I was watching that game.  It was late 80's or early 90's, Blues at Buffalo.  Steve Tuttle and some dude from Buffalo went flying into the net.  It happened real fast, and I really didn't see anything.  The next thing you know, Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk pulls off his mask and blood is SHOOTING out of his neck and pooling up in front of the goal.  Tuttle's skate had gotten up when he was upended through he crease and slit Malarchuck's jugular vein.  Awful, awful stuff.  I was afraid I had just seen a guy die

My first thought this morning when I saw the highlights...Buffalo again.  Both times it happened in Buffalo.  I was really surprised that none of the stories I read today about Zednik mentioned the Malarchuk injury.

Dan Michler

I just watched the Malarchuk video on Youtube and that is absolutely horrific.  If you are squeamish about blood at all then don't watch it because you will get sick.  Massive amounts of blood just spewing from his jugular vein.

It was the strangest feeling when the game came back on, because you could tell that there was a real possibility that the guy was dead.  It looked like he was just going to bleed out on the ice.  Weird, weird hockey game.  They never did get the blood stain completely off the ice.  I remember the camera turning to the Blues goalie, I think it was Vince Riendeau, during the warm up for the next period and he was just skating around in a big circle, looking down at that stain.
