How to grow the sport

My wife joined Toastmasters this past year to work on her speaking skills so that she can continue to sell the book she self-published last year. This past week she gave a short talk "Getting started in disc golf". She brought some of her discs and explained the game, how and where to play, etc. Even though she got high marks from the evaluator, she didn't convince him (good thing it was not the persuasive speech). At a break she had at least four men come up to her looking for more info. In the written comments there were another four or five that thought they would go out and try to play.

She also won best speaker for her talk.

I posted a couple of rants on the topic line, but completely unrelated to your post content, today on PDGA.com in the Peter Shive rant thread.  I even included a shout-out to you.  I thought this was your reply, until i saw the date and the post content. 

Kudos to Lara, both for promoting disc golf and for pursuing self-improvement.

I did something simular in the Army back in 2007.
I am a instructor for the Army Reserves and was nominated for "instructor of the year"  by my unit. I had to give a 20 minute class on any topic to a board. I created and presented "introduction to disc golf for Army physical fitness training" and it went well. Two of the board members had heard of the sport (throught their children) and realy liked the low incidence of injury to players. I did not win but I liked the opportunity to spread the word on disc golf.

My wife had a cool idea as well. She is a substitute teacher and last week she was teaching 4th graders on the topic of the National Park system, from the big parks in Alaska and the Grand Canyon, down to local forest preserves and parks. She took the time and asked if they had heard of disc golf. Their were four that had played (The Round Lake course "Fairfield") with the Cub Scouts. Lesson learned.. Hook Um young and if anyone has contact with the Cub Scouts they could be a good allies in growing the sport.

So have you taken your troop golfing?  Short courses like Warren would think be the ticket.
