Dave, the PDGA ratings system has a minimum course SSA requirement for generating ratings.  Chuck mentioned this before on pdga.com about the White course after Indiana States.  I think it is 42, the answer to life, the universe and everything.  There's a good reason for it, but it is mathematical and hard to explain or understand.  When courses get easier than that, a certain 850ish rated junior girl could whup her 835ish Am Master dad with her short driving accuracy, and that is true throughout the field.  She used to love those courses!  Ratings cease to be meaningful at that point.  They picked 42 and White can go under or over.  With only rec and novice players in the morning field, it might make it over 42.

Mike, if you ran ratings, what did you get for the White SSAs?
That makes sense.  I think her dad is more 935ish but simply misplayed a keystroke. As a semi accurate puss arm, I understand that the white course narrowed the gap between much better players and myself.  I think the advanced  or intermediate players were on white second round which 1) is kind of silly and 2) may tend to push SSA below the threshold.

To get an idea of ratings I just looked at past events on those same courses.  I know that's not accurate, but it does give you some idea of where you are at.

I know for sure I didn't shoot a 1009 rated round on the White course first round!  I'd be happy if it was 920-930.  Still my highest rated round to date, on what is admittedly a pretty easy course.

Looking at Indiana States SSAs, it looks like White had an SSA of 44 there but they accidentally reported it as having been Red.

Very fun day! Although cold the weather at the Homie has been rain free for the past 7 years. Lunch and dinner is a big bonus. For $50 this is the best value event I get every year. I played the Silver course a month ago and saw several new cement tee pads and and briges insalled since that day.. They are doing some good work out there.

The only constructive criticism I have is the lack of information about the courses and tees that will be played. Since the Silver/Gold course was installed there have been serious issues with groups playing the wrong tees. During round 1 there were groups playing provisionals and playing both gold/silver tees on holes. There were several groups that played the wrong tees and got penalized.  There was a major debacle at Indiana States as well.

After reflecting for a few days and seeing the results posted today I thought i'd post again.  Brian Cummings and crew has come a long ways. This was the biggest event he has run and it was one of the most efficient. Great job BC & crew!

Excellent event today. 238 players for a one day event. Got to see two aces on my card the second round, unfortunately neither one belonged to me.  Brian Cummings and the rest of the Red Roc gang did a great job on getting us out of there at a reasonable time.

Chud--- I picked you up a blue champion sidewinder and a yellow dx aviar with your winnings today.

Overall the Homie was one of the better events of the year.239 players at one venue is pretty amazing. Jay did a super job with scorecards, and getting the payouts done in a reasonable amount of time.  It was key that Brian didn't play this year and really focused on keeping things moving along.

The courses are constantly getting better, thank you to all the volunteers who put in numerous hours to make that happen.  I do think the $4.00 course fee up front is fair, but perhaps should be better publicized.  I do not have a problem with the fee, but it would be nice to know up front.  Another nice touch is that there were some very nice trophies given out to the winners the day of the event. Not everyone places the same emphasis on trophies, but these ones looked special.

This is a memorial tournament and I really think that with the shirts, Homie's Mom being on site offering hugs and encouragement, and Brian leading things it was a very nice way to memorialize Matt.

A great job by everyone, but there could be just a couple of minor changes to make the event better.  Having handouts of the courses was nice, but there was still some information missing.  Our card started the day on hole 3 on the blue course, there is a long and a short tee, there wasn't any info on which tee to tee off on, but there was a ctp flag on the short tee.   I grabbed a garbage can and with Tony Batisti's help set it on the long tee.  That way everyone played the same tee. It would have been nice to see the distances on the handout sheets or the score cards.  Flags at tee pads would have been a bonus.  On the blue course after hole 15, hole sixteen was missing the number 1, so it looked like hole 6.  The way it was routed just threw us off a little bit.

Again, these are not complaints, just suggestions.  Overall this was an outstanding event.  Brian has been running events for over 25 years, it is easy to see how much his hard work has benefitted the northwest Indiana disc golf scene.  We are all lucky to have a guy like Brian stay active and involved in disc golf.

Hello All,

I'd like to start by thanking you all of your support of this years HOMIE and tournaments past at Lemon Lake. 239 players IS now a record for us, beating this years Indiana States attendance (209).  Hopefully things will still continue to grow.  Since I've been receiving emails & hearing suggestions, I thought I'd step in to try and clear some air.

1. I do all the reporting for the club, whether it is the website, PDGA reports, flyers, maps, scorecards...anything EXCEPT the rules for the courses used at tournaments.  I noticed the error on the Silver sheet midway through the 1st round about which round the Gold Tees were supposed to be played.  This was then brought up to Brian by myself & Mike Z, then by Ebz & Bundy.  Brian was prepared for the incident that followed.  I assure you that will be taken care of for future events.

2. I first put out the info at our website because I did not think it was going to change. I was then told, by Brian, which courses were to be used by what division on Saturday (10-10) during doubles and made up a color coded sheet that was distributed to the pre-reg table, walk up sign ups, and was also placed on the information board in the middle of the room.  I really can't it clearer unless I print it poster size.  People still do not attend players meetings to listen to the tournament director, instead hanging out in parking lot getting their heads ready for the round or they just think the rules don't apply to them.

3. Since the course has been tweaked while working on in, maps of the Silver course were still being adjusted.  However, I created full color course maps for White, Red, and Blue. They are available at http://www.lakecountyparks.com/lemonlake.html.  Printing 200 of each was impossible since all printing is done through my personal printer at home and It would have taken a week to print them all.

4. If you attended the tournament on Sunday, Oct. 11th and were one of the entries that did NOT get a players package, please email me .....redrocdiscgolf@yahoo.com.....Charlene (Matt's mother) will be placing another order at the end of the month.

If you received the incorrect size, you can mail your shirt to:

Lemon Lake County Park, 6322 W. 133rd Avenue – Crown Point, Indiana 46307 and request another size.  Please include cashiers check for amount of return shipping.

5. PLAYERS RATINGS ISSUES.....Since returning from Arizona this March, I have been doing all the reporting. I have heard your voices & I will be contacting Jon this evening to figure out what I need to do to correct the UNOFFICIAL ratings.  I have tried to work with the PDGA on making it easier to report multiple setups on multiple courses, but since there are only 3 places with more that 2 courses on the property, it's not a priority. Once the PDGA report goes in, they look at the section that explains which division played what course and adjust the ratings accordingly.  I spoke to Chuck Kennedy about this issue yesterday, even before I submitted the results because I knew it would be incorrect but I did not want to delay the posting of the results.

6.  I met with Charlene & Jim last night and spoke with them on a number of things including if this was to be the last event that they would be involved in.  I was assured that they were looking to move farther south in Munster and would be holding this event as long a Charlene was alive.  She can't think of a better way to honor her ONLY son (and my good friend) by spending time around Matts birthday (this year especially) with the people that Matt loved as well.  For those who don't know Matt, I can tell you stories & provide photos.

7. I personally would like to thank everyone for the compliments on the courses themselves. Since being hired on a Disc Golf Course Maintenance Director, it fills me with great pride to see so many persons playing out there.  Since putting in the original 18 (Blue 1 & 15, Red 1-7, 10-18) in 1999, we could not have seen what was to become The Lemon Lake Disc Golf Complex in the next 10 years. It took Brian & myself 3 years of demonstrations at Deep River Waterpark & presentations to the Parks Board before they EVEN let us cut the first tree.

Hope this helps put some of the fires.  Please feel free to contact me with your thoughts

Congrats to Nick Fyock for shooting a 1074 rated round to win INT and the ACE and the 5050

Moderator's note: Edited the name of the guest poster. I'm sure the poster didn't mean any offense...but it seemed weird so I changed it to "Guest". - Jon

Obviously that guy was an imposter.  Anyone who knew Homie knows that he doesn't have any idea what "1074 rated" means, and what's an INT?  Is that the new name for Ams?  It is hard to keep up on the new disc golf stuff here.  We've got a new guy here, Timmy.  Maybe he can explain this.

Nick, buddy, if you won in Ams, move up already.  Grow a pair and go pro.

Running out of time, now.  Heard you all cheering.  Got to go.

Nick is currently rated 926 which is Int. or Am 2.  He is not a bagger. He shot lights out and had a great day taking home gobs of both plastic and money on Sunday.  I don't think his round will be 1074 rated but will be very high and may bump him up to Adv. or MA1 by the next update.  Nice shooting buddy!

Jon Brakel

I thought it was a heart felt congratulations. If it wasn't then I'll make up for it. Nice day Nick!!!

They even caught the fact that the Open Pros played Silver / Silver&Gold while the older pros played Silver&Gold / Silver.  Good catch.

Right now the Intermediates are generating a White SSA of about 41.14 but the Rec/Nov are generating a White SSA of 42.57.  Have I got the math right here?  I'm not sure.  Mike?  Help.

The two pools are 26 ratings points apart for the same scores, so maybe they don't get combined.  I'm not looking up the rule on that.

For good or for bad, intermediate rounds on White might not get rated.  If they get combined, maybe no one gets rated.  White needs to be toughened up for tournament play.

It was kind of funny. Jay called me up last night and I had my laptop booted up already in front of me but I couldn't get into the IOS 4 online since it had been submitted (I needed to look at it to tell Jay what tab to go into and how to do it). So, while I was looking for the link to the practice area Jay says "Oh, I think I just found it!" And he had and was all set. But he was nice enough to thank me for the help...even though I didn't give him any!

I got 42.55 and 41.18 for the SSA. Ratings are combined if they are with 1.5 SSA. For official ratings, White should get combined as long as the TD report uses the same layout code for MA3/MA4 RD1 and MA2 Rd2. Whether or not they get dropped because the SSA is slightly below 42 is debatable. If was just a division of MA3/MA4, then I would argue that they shouldn't be dropped as the players aren't getting too close to the compression point. With MA2 in the mix, it gets more intereseting. Time for the ask chuck thread...

I'd agree, white should be toughed for tournament play.

Maybe some of the shortest holes just need to be turned into yellow rope island holes!  >:D

From Ask Chuck...
41.4 is the minimum SSA that we've judged acceptable over the years. We would normally average those two rounds together anyway to do the ratings which would bring the SSA above the minimum.
