I'm sure some of you might have read/seen this somewhere. It's the 24 Hour Disc Golf Charity Event that is taking place in June/July 2004.

PDGA has a DISCUSSION about it.

OR you can the website for Disc Golfers for Cancer.

This looks like a good opportunity for a fundraisier, and even a good cause for "life" in general. I proposed to some of the people here at Parkside, but I don't know what will happen.

I don't have any experience in setting things like this up, but it sounds like all the promotions and everything will be sent to us. We, obviously, need to make sure that there are people there (or even just collect donations).

Each player is required to give a $25 donation. There's a nice player's package that is worth more the $25. Plus, there are prizes for the most attended events and $$$ raised.

Just a thought. What do people think? I'd be willing to work with others in putting this together if we decide this is something that could happen. I know there is always issues with having to be able to be in the parks after certain hours, etc.

I think its a good cause, I have had a few close people diagnosed with various forms of cancer. I would love to participate in this if someone gets it going.

$5 of the fee goes to the Lance Armstrong Foundation...$5 goes to the sponsoring club. If 20 people play/particpate that's $100 quick cash for the club.

I, too, have family and friends families who have been diagnosed with various cancers.

I'm trying to see if SE Wisconsin Disc Golf Club would be interested also...maybe we could do something together.

I'd be happy to participate as my Mother passed away from cancer last October.  I'll try and be there, as long as it's not on the weekend of June 5th (getting Married!).

June 5th would definitely be out of the question...that's the Prairie Open.
I know that there is one in Joliet. It doesn't have a date, though. Steve Rhine is the contact. Anyone know Steve?

Worst case scenario, maybe I'll have to make the trip to Joliet. Does anyone know how far that is from Kenosha? Waukegan?

MORE INFORMATION

Check this link. This might make things a little easier. If I'm reading it right, it mentions that the whole thing is fairly flexible:

"The second thing to keep in mind is that it is not mandatory to play for all 24 hours. Some locations will allow this some will not. Why not try to do it for twelve hours on Saturday and twelve hours on Sunday, or whatever is the best time frame for you and the local city. Players if they like can choose to support the event, charity and the local club just by purchasing the player package. One round, one day, or all 24 hours, it is flexible."

If this would be the case, I could start talking with some people here at Parkside.

We're OFFICIAL!

Parkside will be hosting the 24 Hour Charity Event on August 7, 2004. I know this is around PDGA Worlds, but this was the only date that would fit into the schedule (Wisconsin & Illinois). The national event director gave us the OK to host in August.

Details for the day are still being finalized, but if you're interested in learning more, let me know and I'll give you the details as we have them. For sure, we will host a mini-tourny and glow round. Other possibilities include an Ace Race, Safari Course and "Backward Course" round. Anyone know of other games to play?

Because it is a charity event, I'm hoping people will bring others who want to learn about disc golf...similar to World's Biggest Weekends.

More information will be posted soon. For those of you going to Worlds at this time, Good Luck!

Might be fun to set up a temp course through some of the cross country trails. They should still be clear in August, and even a 9 hole course would be cool.

Putting contest.
Maybe a D contest in the soccer fields if there aren't any games.

Am I the only person who has noticed that this organization is called Disc Golfers for Cancer?  Does this mean that they are against Lance Armstrong?  How can anybody be for cancer?

Some smart ass needs to go post something at pdga.com but I'm busy managing a fight and can't leave my corner...

No, but I thought you might be willing to be our patsy.

I just checked the whole PDGA thread and someone did post questioning the discgolfers FOR cancer. No one responded. He suggested they change it to disc golfers AGAINST cancer. He was like halfway down on the first page.

However, it is really wrong that they have named it disc golfers for cancer and they should really change it. My sister died from cancer and that name just doesn't sit well with me.

I had the same thoughts when I first read the idea of the event...FOR CANCER? But then, I think if you don't read it literally and look into the mission and objective of the event it makes a little more sense.

I'm involved in a program at my work, Surviving Sexual Assault Advocacy group. Does this mean I need people to be sexually assaulted for this group to continue? Kind of sounds like it to me.

So, yes it sounds awkward and misleading. 24 Charity Event would have worked just fine. Either way, the whole event, regardless of the name, is for a good cause.

OK, my 2 cents.

Those Rocs are sweet!!!  Are the pictures on the stamp going to cover the entire disc???  Or are they going to be the smaller pics like ching full color stamps??

D

I remember being told they will actually cover the entire disc.

So If I want to recieve this "players package" I have to sign up now? Otherwise it's impossible to recieve it, and or play at the event? I'm a bit confused..

SERG

CORRECTION

Make checks payable to Sergio Correa, NOT Texas 10 Charity Tour.

Diron,

Unfortunately I have to order the packages now. Otherwise, I, or the University, would have to front the money to purchase the packages not knowing who will be playing for sure. If you don't order a package but want to play, that's fine. You DON'T have to buy a package.

Make sense?
