What's an Illini anyway? And if it is an Indian referrence, why didn't they discuss changing their mascot as did the Marquette Golden Eagles (previously Warriors)?

well Sergio, after having lived down in that area for 5 years I can tell you that the debate over whether to keep Chief Illiniwek as a mascot was an ongoing thing for many years.  Just last year they did decide to do away with him because he was offensive to some Native Americans.  However they keep the name Illini because it is simply an Indian Tribe (like the Florida State Seminoles) and is not related to violence or anything like that as the name Warriors or Braves is.

I'm glad I can be of so much help     And yes the Illini will go undefeated.  I'm glad you have conceded that we will defeat the badgers in champaign and at the Big Ten Tourney.

Dan, I think you put it right.  The Illini are local to the area-- hence the name.  If anything, it shows the tie to the historcal past.  This is no different from the Blackhawks.  It names a tribe but does not attribute anything to the tribe such as warriors or braves.  What amazes me is how the Cleveland Indians get away with Wahoo, their cartoon character indian.  I think that is way more demeaning than Braves or Warriors.  The Blackhawks have the best jersey in all pro sports.  Too bad the managment (thread drift here) is insane and the league is in jeapardy.

I know that when Oregon came to the United Center to play the Illini they were troubled by the Chief.   I think the teams had agreed to play but that the Chief would not be at the game.  A friend of mine, an Illini alum, really wanted to wear a headdress to the game.  His wife perusaded him not do do it.

When Illinois plays at Oregon next year, they've already been told that the Chief is not welcome.  Oregon actually talked about boycotting the game this year.  A lot of people don't realize that the Illini tribe have actually taught the Chief how to do the actual dance that he does.  It's not just a dude dancing around like an idiot.  Supposedly, the dance is actually choreographed to mimic a tribal dance of the Illilni.
