"The use of drugs is a perverse expression of individualism, antisocial and life-denying,It isn't an assertion of individuality; it's a substitute for it. It's not an attempt to be different when everyone else is becoming more alike; it's a way of copping out. And that's the worst thing you can do."

In the same vein, here's another long and self-absorbed story from that klem guy:

In 1980, I was 14 and a student in the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago's high school seminary - and an enthusiastic Beatles fan. The morning of December 9, after I heard about Lennon's murder, I made and wore a black armband to school to show my support for Lennon's musical genius and work for peace.

The seminary was a fairly strict religous institution, and I got suspended for not removing the armband in school - and was proud! I considered myself to be cool by making a (vague) political statement and getting punished for it.

However, those three days of suspension would end up being very important for me. I used the time to travel all over the city of Chicago - it was a 3-day journey of discovery. I found a few good used book stores, got lost in Chinatown, experienced the BillyGoat Tavern, fell asleep on the "L" and woke up at 133rd and Wentworth (middle of gang territory) and had to figure out how to get back to the north side at 2am.  I made new friends, had breakfast with Oprah (pre-Harpo studios), and became a little more self-reliant in the process.

John Lennon may have been lot of things, but the music he brought to the world, the ideas he placed in our collective consciousness, and the honesty with which dealt with the media, made him a hero to me. Whether or not he was an American citizen or a socialist asshole, John Lennon showed us all that happiness is more than a warm gun.

Jim,

How does it feel knowing that I got the Dr Dye John Lennon Disc?    :o  :P

Sorry that was bad form - it is displayed ever-so proudly at my new house.

Soon there will be a bar down in the basement and will display a multitude of discs.  That one being the front-runner.
