The first date for our Safari Series has wavered, but is now set in stone: Sunday, May 19th at 1pm.  It will indeed be at "Thorne's Woods", part of the LCForest Preserve near Belvidere and Lewis in Waukegan.  Please park in the Thomas Jefferson middle school parking lot (where Brett works) off of Lewis, just south of Home Depot. Format will be 18 holes, 9 at a time. We will need 8 baskets other than mine, so please confirm with me that we can use your targets if you have them.

I will be out there clearing brush and marking paths this Saturday at 8am and next Friday evening (5pm-ish) and Sunday at 8am before the event; please help if you can.  Brett, may we use your wacker?  :-)

This is the first of 4 events over the course of 13 weeks. The grand prize is a practice basket or something of equal value. I promise these temp courses will be FUN, challenging, and FUN!

So, things went well for the safari? I tried calling jojo at 5:30 & he wasn't home yet.... must've been a looooong round... :)
Don't forget your towel!

mirth

Yeah, Pets would be an awesome location for a temp course! I thought someone suggested it at the last pizza meeting... ^_^

I will bring my upgraded Tri-State with metal (instead of plastique) chains. I'd like to use yours, Bill, as well as Matt's, Brett's, Jojo/Myk's, and Adrian's metal monster!  All would be very cool!

jim

Excellent, thanks, Brett.  Maybe Bevier after Best Shot & your game?  I'll stay out there late most likely . . . .

jim

OK, after a few last-minute decisions, here is the FINAL info for the first

date of the Members' Only Safari Series. The location and number of holes has

changed:

Sunday, May 19th - 1pm

LYON'S WOODS

Sheridan Road at Blanchard Road

Beach Park, IL

Entry Fee: $7.00

18 Holes of Safari Disc Golf on a Temporary Course Nobody has Played Before!

(Plus a few extra, just for fun!)

This first of four events has been moved to Lyons Woods because Thorne's

Woods (near Belvidere Mall) is unplayable with unending, horrible rough,

and squatters living in tents there. Also, after scoping out Lyons Woods

for the first time, I found it to be perfectly suitable for primal discing!

About half the holes are on or go along the walking path; the rest are either

partially or totally in the woods. There are minor elevation changes, tough

curved fairways, hidden baskets, and a good mix of straight, righty, and

lefty shots. There are no water hazards, but some of the wooded shots make

up for it. I recommend wearing long pants or sweatpants (a tick came home

with me on my leg) and bringing bug-spray. WE WILL ALSO NEED A SPOTTER if

anyone wants to help out.

If you are bringing a basket, please be there at 12 Noon (or as much before

1pm as possible). This is going to be a great temporary course for the

day! So bring your game and call me with any questions. See you there!

jim

Yes, thanks to everyone who showed up - and special thanks to those who either brought baskets or lugged them all over west Hell.  THANK YOU!  Yes, the idea was to use 9 baskets twice, but the beautiful layout screamed for length and unique holes.  My bad for making it so huge, but I hope everyone had fun.

I will, however, turn over the next temp Safari course layouts to the Ops Committee.  Let's get different opinions and viewpoints involved!  There's one month until the next event, so put your thinking caps on and let me know what you need.

jim

I think Pets would be great!

Local courses to choose from for the 2 other Safari events:

Adler (Libertyville - 9 holes)

Fairfield (Round Lake - 18 holes)

Lippold (Crystal Lake - now 8 holes)

Valley View (New Berlin, WI - 18 holes)

Dretzka (Menomonee/Milwaukee - 18 holes)

Anna Page (Rockford - 18 holes)

Others: Streamwood, Highland Park, Joliet, Lombard

Look for a voting/opinion poll on the website soon!

Man! Is anyone else tired? I'm beat after yestarday. I had a good time though. If I played there every day i'd become a much better thrower. Talking about having to throw great shots. I won't be able to make Thursday again. I've got to go to the baseball banquet & then i'll be there finally.

I thought the course was pretty cool. Some of the holes had some impossible windows but for the most part they were fun. It was a long round. We didn't get packed up until 6:00PM. I think if we had only played 9 twice, it wouldn't have taken so long. Al, Jojo, Adrian, & Shawn were blasting some long drives. I thought the turnout was pretty good. (12) Hopefully everyone had fun. I did!

I even thought about a series where we play 4 different course in the area. 1. Bevier 2. UW Parkside 3. Fairfield 4. Adler or any 4 combination of courses. I think it would cut big amounts of time spent.

What do you guys think? I would like to help set up the next one but I wouldn't want to be the only one.

I'm always up for traveling to new courses. I haven't been to a lot of the course you listed. Here's some of my votes. Valley View, Dretzka, Lombard, Joliet, Highland Park & any other ones I haven't been to. My goal is to play all Illinois courses as well. I just wonder how far people are willing to travel. Streamwood is a big course & the big arms would like that one I think!

So are we using the regular handicap scoring, or is everyone equal for this Safari Series?

vanmaster_b

....also, is the point scoring system the same as Best Shot, or is there a different scoring system.

vanmaster_b

It was a long round, and I wimped out after 9 holes. It took longer to set up baskets than expected - about an hour and a half. Matt and I left a liitle after 3pm, so I don't know how late everyone else stayed.

The holes that didn't go along the bike path were through some seroius rough. Very difficult tight shots that required a lot of control. Any later in the season and the growth might have been too thick to play through, not ito mention the bugs that would be out (I pulled off 3 ticks from myself). This was truly a Safari round.

shawn

I like the idea of safaring other courses.  Craig and I play Parkside in reverse Basket to Basket, superhard...After Sunday, I got 3 ticks out off my cloths, no bites luckily.  Petrified Springs would make a great temp course, that I would gladly layout, all the baskets would be about 50 to 200 ft from a road.  We can have elevation and water.
Let us hope that the whores of evil no longer loiter on the doorsteps of your path beckoning you into the brothel of despair, and that here and after may present them with the most rigid manistfestation of a firm and manly will.
