A few months ago, Andrew Holzman (Badger 1190) e-mailed me about a possible course in Northfield.  I shot an e-mail to the guy at the Northfield Park District.  He replied to me looking for financial assistance.  Someone from the club had apparently contacted him and he seems to be under the impression that the club or somebody was willing to spend some $.  Is this true?  The following was the e-mail exchange.  I do not want to reply to him until I figure out who he spoke with and where the club's collective head is on this.  I simply wrote to the guy as a citizen pushing for disc golf.

Mr. Barish,

We are currently working on our Willow Park Master Plan. A 9-hole Disc Golf course has been included and we are curious as to the willingness to financially assist with the Disc aspect of the plan. There was a gentleman out from Discontinuum last year who laid out a course and was interested in funding it. Is there still interest in project assistance?

Subject: disc golf course

Mr. Dawson

I am a Skokie resident, parent and avid disc golfer.  I understand that the Northfield Park District is considering installing a disc golf course.  I wish I could say the same for my village.  I think this is an excellent idea and strongly recommend that Northfield follow through and build a course.  There is a dearth of disc golf courses on the north shore.

Disc golf is an activity that is enjoyed by all ages.  I am the parent of two teenagers.  Any sports activity is good for them.  I have often taken my thirteen year old to the course in Glencoe.  Disc Golf is one of the rare activities where someone in their 50's or 60's will play a round with someone in thier 20's or even teens. Disc golfers also bring money to the local economy.  The local convenience stores will be able to sell drinks, snacks, and perhaps discs as well to incoming golfers.

Disc golfers are "green" users.  We clean up after ourselves.  We use the garbage cans.  We leave the area as clean, or cleaner, than we found it.  We take an interest in local courses and often work to keep them in good playing condition with the cooperation of local park districts.

Please let me know if you would like to discuss the installation of a disc golf course with me, or any other member of the DISContinuum Disc Golf Club.  Please take a look at the club website, www.discontinuum

Thank you.

the man who designed the course is not a discontinuum member, his name is mike glass and he paid and designed aall of our short nine holers (glencoe, both hps, deerfield...) he has offered to fund the entire project and when i last spoke to mr dawson they still were planning to install this course at some point in the future.  FYI he has given the New Trier Disc Golf Club permission to run a tournament at the park with temporary baskets, ill post more information when its available.

I assume the guy is referring to Mike.  I assume he should reply to him. I am not sure what else he would want from DISContinuum or what the club would be willing to do.  I assume that we can offer volunteers for cleanup and to post and remove things from the board at the park (assuming they have a board).  Andrew, board members -- how would you like me to respond? To whoever worked with these guys to get a course installed, nice job!

i think that you should tell him that mike is still interested in funding and desiging the course, but he just wants to know when he can go forward with his plans(when willow park is redesigned).  when mike and i went out there they seemed to be very hesitant; so mike got discouraged, but when i talked to mike he said that he was just waiting for them to let him make his plans official.
