Funy thing you say that Dan- At Iron Lion Safari I threw an 06 Lumber Cup into the woods.  Long story short I played my lie from someone elses lost 06 Lumber Cup disc.  Realized it 3-4 holes later when I went to throw it again.

WHOOPS.

At an Illinois State Champs a few years ago another player and I had identical looking discs, probably Crushes.  On one hole I drove with a Crush and he says, "I think you threw my Crush."  I say, "I pulled it out of my bag."  He says, "Yeah but I pulled this out of my bag and it has your name on it."  So I said, "Well, I don't think there is any rule against me throwing your disc if it is in my bag, is there?  Throw my Crush and we can trade back after."

Is there any rule against that?

Probably at some point we both played from the other's lie unaware.  But no one noticed, or, he noticed and did not say.

If someone allows you to throw their disc, there is no rule against that. I know I've been lazy and asked to borrow someones disc that I'm clearing out of the basket for them, I then drop it back in for my tap in.

No rule against that- you both threw marked discs.

BUT

You both should have both been stroked for playing from the wrong lie.

If I wouldnt have went to use that disc again during the round I would have never had the pleasure of stroking myself (no pun intended).

Quote from: The Murky Waters Called our Rule Book
803.10       Throwing From Another Player's Lie

A. A player who has thrown from another player's lie shall receive two penalty throws, without a warning. The offending player shall complete the hole as if the other player's lie were his or her own. No throws shall be replayed.

B. The player whose lie was played by the offending player shall be given an approximate lie as close to the original lie as possible, as determined by the offending player, a majority of his or her group, or an official. See section 803.11 C if the disc has been declared lost.

You have to read into this rule a little bit. The presumption, based on how the rule is written, is that your mistake is going to be discovered before the hole is over. It would not be practical to go back 5 holes, for instance, and replay the hole from the approximate lie. Given Bruce's scenario you wouldn't even know which hole to go back to let alone what lie. Also there is the "reasonable doubt" about IF you threw from each other's lie. There are several non-penalty situations in which you could mix up your disc with someone else's in the group. This would be like called an OB penalty because a player pulls out a freshly muddy disc. "Dude the only mud on this course today is OB. Stroke penalty!!"

I think you have to call playing from the wrong lie on the hole where it happens...when you still know which lie was played incorrectly.

Since both would have played from the wrong lie, 803.10.A is easy to handle. Just +2 to each score. As for satisfying 803.10.B, this only really applies if the player whose lie was played hasn't made any additional throws. Why? Because he also threw from the wrong lie and "no throws shall be replayed".

Now the question would be muddy if the two players had been comparing their discs at the tee. It would be entirely possible that each put the wrong disc into their bag at that point. In which case, no penalty should be assessed.

If you realize that this happened after the hole was played and there was no way to figure out what hole or when this happend then there would be penelty. Right?
