I just wanted to start a DISCussion on the subject of having the open division play on Saturdays at many (pretty much all) of the local events. Is there any logical reason for this? For years and years and years it was pros play on Sunday. Is it because of the way the IOS is set up and others are just copying that? Was there a big study conducted that showed that an event will get a better turnout set up like this. I just dont get it.

As a TD when you look at the schedule the easiest way to get an event scheduled without conflicts is run Pro/Adv on Saturday. With more events offered it's getting tougher & tougher to make things work.

This is the reason the IOS started this in 2005. It made scheduling easier opening up some of those prime dates. An immediate spike in attendance started.

play my joliet tournament August 3rd, Pro's play Sunday :)

I decided some of my splits based on some of what the other tournaments in the area are doing in nearby states.  I'll go opposite what they do (or at least try to).  For instance I'll have a tournament mid-september - the same weekend as Wilbur and I think an Indiana tournament.  I'm going to put the divisions that I feel will be more populated on the opposite day of the bigger tournament so that people can play both.

Unfortunately for every Pro that can't play on a Saturday there's a Pro that can't play on a Sunday.  I try to accomodate as many people as I can, but it's not easy!

Yes, I plan on playing both your tournaments next weekend and the one after that  but I dont see that Joliet tournament on the pdga site for Sunday. ???

it's there - they listed it kind of weird because I asked them to hold off until I was 100% sure on the course.  I need to get my sanctioning payment in and tell them to get it listed appropriately so that I can get the ball rolling on this thing!

Glad to hear you'll be out on that Sunday! :)

Wait a sec - Roselle Open IS on a Saturday.  Joliet Open is on SUNDAY.  I don't know if you can make Roselle or not, but yes, that's slightly confusing, but at the same time - that's one of the reasons I have Joliet on (mostly) opposite days - to enable people that are only available 1 day per weekend a chance to attend at least one of the tournaments!

Its clearly not there for Sunday, only for Saturday and the divisions are specifically listed and do not include Advanced or Pro.  I know you want a great turnout, and that should happen on that course but I'd get the word out as soon as possible because it sounded this weekend like alot of people were unaware of a tournament at West Park.

Brett is correct about the IOS.  Now that we are not as concerned about what other TDs are doing, we've kept Open on Saturday so that Brett can participate in the accounting process Sunday afternoon, and then we can get out of Dodge an hour earlier.

You have to think back to the days of Saturday being unsanctioned "Novice and Ams" to understand why TDs were running pros on Sunday.  Back then the lower divisions were getting paid top 3 or top 4 even if there were 30 in the division, and their entry fees were mostly added cash to the Open division.

I was out at West Park today to check out the course and see what to do about hole 16/17.  I posted a sign on the board there talking about the tournament.

Hopefully everything will be cleared up tomorrow with the PDGA.

I haven't gotten my 2008 member packet yet and I've e-mailed the office once to ask about it. They said it was on the way. I think that was two months ago. Oh well, if I never get it, I'll ask for a free membership for 2009!  :D
