"First & Hopefully Last Berber Open at Indian Oaks"
Come out for our first (and hopefully last) tournament on our disgusting, sloppy, worthless carpet tee pads!  The Marengo Disc Golf Club has partnered up with Glide to put on a fundraiser tournament at our very own Indian Oaks DG Course.

When:April 21, 2012
Where: Indian Oaks Park, Marengo IL

Registration: 8:00am - 8:55am
Players Meeting: 9:00am
Tee Off: 9:30am

The tee pads at Indian Oaks are currently pieces of Berber carpet.  This tournament is being run as part of the PDGA's Compeition Endowment Program.  The primary goal of this event is to raise the funds needed to replace the berber carpet with concrete.
Of the $29 entry fee, $1 will go into an ace pool, $10 will be used for concrete & $18 will go toward event payout.

Special Lunch Provided by Flatlander Market
As a proud sponsor of the Marengo Disc Golf Course. Flatlander Market is pleased to be able to  offer participants a Tournament Boxed lunch for your convenience and enjoyment.  The price for this is $10 with a percentage of the proceeds being donated back to the course.  Lunch will be there waiting for you as you finish your first round.  Please help support one of our sponsors (hole 18) by adding this on to your registration.

QuoteCome out for our first (and hopefully last) tournament on our disgusting, sloppy, worthless carpet tee pads!

Hey guys, just wanted to say we were just having fun with the "disgusting/sloppy" comment above.  The carpet tee pads actually play very well.  (not as nice as concrete, but far better than natural pads)

We got a couple comments/calls regarding the "negativity" of this wording so we want to just clarify.

All 18 holes will have good footing for the tournament!

As of right now the only two holes that are still natural are 1 and 18, and we plan on putting in carpet on those two soon.

The carpet tees at Flip City always seemed to work well, but there the soil is sandy and drains well.  Concrete seems to work better.

I recall helping Fred carry the first carpet remnants out onto the course last July and being pretty skeptical of the ghetto tee pads. After using them for a while, I still think they're pretty ugly but they give good traction, even when wet, and I'd rather tee from carpet than from fly pads. The downside lies in how thin the carpet is, allowing the ground underneath to get rutted, leaving an uneven surface at times.

Mmmmhmm. Which is why we'd love to see folks coming up to play and help us make this a reality.

I'm proposing that Discontinuum should try to get a group of club members out one of these weekends and help with some clean up on your sponsored holes.  While we have gotten Alot of work done on the wooded holes thanks to Dag and our other volunteers, there's always more to do.  If there are guys willing  to come out and give us a hand, just get a hold  of John, Dag or I and we'll come out and help and throw a round with ya.  I'm asking all clubs who have sponsored holes to do the same all in hopes of getting the course in great playing shape for the tourney.   Thanks

Glide is excited to come down and help run this event.  I ran a similar event in Baraboo, WI in 2010 that raised over $1,000 for concrete tee pads.

Also, Glide will be donating 10% of all sales that day toward concrete tee pads.

Finally, the ace pool will put toward concrete tee pads if there are no aces.

Thanks,

Mike

I just updated the list of registered players.  Really surprised at the perceived lack of interest.  I ran a similar event in Baraboo, WI in 2010.  We had a full field of 90 players (turning away a handful) at an inferior course.  Saturday's weather forecast looks good...mid 50s...and dry.  Hoping for a surge of online registration over the next few days.

Online registration deadline is noon on Friday.

There will be on site registration from 8:00-8:45 on Saturday.

Mike,

Mokena is running it's first sanctioned event since 2005. I think quite a few people are planning on going there.

Why the competition between tournaments this weekend?

Mokena was scheduled. Some options were given to avoid it but Fred said this date was good.

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't think I would want to go up against Mokena.

Registration the day of is fine, no biggy.  It's just easier for the TD when you prereg. We didn't mean or want to be on the same day as Mokena or any other tourney.  It's just kinda how the cards fell.  This is a fundraiser to better the course and spread the word about local disc golf.  So obviously a clear date would be better.  Disc golf is blowing up in northern Illinois and it seems like every weekend has something going on.  I'm sure both tourneys will be fine and I hope to see huge numbers at both.

I agree. I think both events will do great. The weather looks decent right now. I'd expect quite a few Rockford guys as well.

I just wanted to chime in here and say that I had no issue with another tournament the same weekend as Mokena. I told Brett I was OK with it, so there is no perceived issue from my end. I hope you guys have a successful tournament and get those concrete pads in!

all right guys its the day before the tourney and thanks to all the guys who have been out bust'n balls get'n the course ready.  We've got a decent amount of players pre-reged, and the word is, theres gonna be a good amount of guys buying in tomorrow morn.   Weathers supposed to be nice, maybe a little chilly in the morn, but nice.  The recent rain hasn't effected the course really at all.   The "berber" is holding up perfectly.  plus as a bonus, the 3 holes with a creek through them all have flowing water.  So shes lookn pretty.  I'm looking forward to a great day of golf.  See you out there, and shoot well

What tees are we playing tomorrow?  I'm seeing two sets on dgcoursereview.com.  I'm thinking two rounds of longs.  Those shorts look really short!

PHishHead

We are playing the long or "white" tees.  The shorts or "red" Tees are mostly meant for kids or complete newbie beginners.  They were mostly put in for park district use.   One day down the line we plan on multiple placements plus multiple tees, and hopefully 3 to 9 more holes.  First we're working on getting the best possible 18 hole layout.  Along with soon to be concrete tees.
