Hello Vince welcome to the new wonderful drug of disc golf lol.  For tournaments you can use this link.

It will tell you every sanctioned tournament in the State of Illinois.  Brett does give out lessons here is the link:

Brett has alot of video links that can help you get started trying to help you work on your form.

A Sanctioned PDGA tournament has many divisions each one having a cost of some sort. If you are not a current pdga member  the cost will increase usually by $10.  Being a pdga member has it advantages.  Saving $10 at registation costs,  getting a small discount on certain hotels and motels.  A tournament(s) I recommend that help you get started to the tourney scene will be any of the IOS (Illinois Open Series).  Well ran, very nice people and very laid back people, and Scott ( Paper or Plastic Sports) has a insanely big selection of discs.

I am about a good 45 minutes from the Streamwood course ( Shady Oaks).  Maybe we can work something out and meet about half way like at Lippold Park in Crystal Lake.

Hopes this helps
