Even though I may just be co-TD, I thought I'd get this started.

3rd Annual Widdershins Open is on Saturday, June 7th at HFCdgc at Bevier Park in Waukegan, IL.

Because of all sorts of scheduling conflicts (Prairie Open, Safari, Junior Leagues, Best Shot Leagues, AND the WPD's annual Fishing Derby at Bevier), this year's Widdershins will have a slightly different format.

Yes, some/most holes will be played backwards or safari style, but we will also have some GLOW discing!!!  We will start approximately 3pm, have one round of 18 holes, then take about a 1hr. dinner break, possibly rearrange the baskets, then play another 18 GLOW holes.

Feedback from the past few events seems to indicate that ALL divisions (Pro/Advanced/Am/Rec/Junior) would like to play as many holes as possible, so perhaps all divs will play all 36 holes (shorter tees for Rec/Juniors?).

I recommend that entry fees be bumped up by $5-6 and we include a glow disc as players' package.

OK. Gimme some feedback........

mirth

Possibly, although with glow sticks on your discs twilight wouldn't pose as much a danger for losing discs.

I'm curious if we'd be able to swing permission from WPD and the other WPD (the po-po, y'all) to be in the park after close....

Sundown/9PM, whichever is earlier... I think.

Bumped up? Comparing Jim's and Brett's posts it looks like the entries dropped by $5-10, depending on division.

Well, I can certainly donate a printer to the club (used Deskjet, only does b&w but what else do you need?) and potentially the use of my laptop for the day of the event.

The printer's for keeps, tho. ;)

Just curious, how can we play two rounds of 19 if there are only 10 (or 11) pins to throw at? We'd have to have two groups throwing at the same hole but different tees... Is that a good idea?

Also, w/o a good bridge from C to the 9th tee, I wonder how smart it would be to try to play that hole or the one under the power lines at night.

This totally blows.

I can call a friend (or have Jojo or Myk do it since its a local call) and see if a suitable bridge could be whipped up in time for Saturday for at least hole C. I dunno what to say about old A.

But you're still talking about two groups throwing at the same pin... You can count different tees until you're blue in the face but the fact remains that a group teeing from 5 & 14 are throwing at the same target.

With only 10 (or 11 if we play C) baskets to play, the best we can do is a field of 50-55... and thats putting groups of 5 on every hole.

I'm sure fun will be had by all, it'll just be a longer day if we get more than 50 & don't have more than 11 baskets to throw at.

May I ask how in the hell are we going to use hole B? That rough is incomprehensible....

Or by B do you really mean old-A?

I have Friday off due to random Jewish holiday & can probably donate some time to course setup/improvements.

Can't offer any tools other than weedwacker, shovel, rakes.

yes, printer is sitting where I put it last November when I gave the wife her bday gift.

The club may want to pick up an ink cart. just to have in case. If I had one I'd gladly donate it, alas I don't.

I will check the cartridge tonite to see if it has anything in it.

mirth

Uh, well the printer is a DeskJet 520. I'll get you more specific info as to cartridge model tonight.

The printer is certainly compatible with just about anything down to a 'smart' typewriter.

As far as I am aware, at least as of the day we sunk A & C, we didn't take down any living trees. Just weeds & maybe some saplings in the teebox for C, but certainly nothing larger than the diameter of a dime...

Brett - I will be there Friday morning. Nothing like giving up sleeping in time for disc golf! :D

U know specifically where? If you're talking about the fairway on A where there was a 3"+ diameter tree taken down that was down & missing before we worked that day... And yeah, that was a real dirty job they did too. Left like a 4' tall stump.

mirth

Looks nice tomorrow! A little on the cool side, but thats okay.

Bring LOTS of skeeter spray. I got eaten alive today in the woods & under trees in the open parts.

Shawn - I can supply those.

Recent talks with Mike Trigg indicated he was willing to allow us to stay after sundown, but not past 10pm. So it will be more of a twilight round, but I'm sure glow will be necessary for wooded and later holes.

As for the layout, I was thinking of something like this:

Round 1

A. Play new CTP hole using Basket 2.

B. Play Hole 12 (to Basket 3).

C. Tee from near tee 20 to Basket 1.

D. Play HPC's Hole C backwards to NE corner of course.

E. Play HPC's Hole B backwards (basket at long tee).

F. Tee from near Basket 9 to new perm Hole C basket (in woods near creek - this will be a huge and tight and winding lefty hole unless tomahawk is used).

*cross creek on natural bridge in place by then)*

G. Tee from Tee 27 to Basket 7.

H. Play from new perm Hole A basket area to Basket 6.

I. Tee from Hole 6's cement tee to Basket 5.

J-R. Repeat, some at slightly different tees.

Round 2

A. Hole 1.

B. Hole 11.

C. Hole 12.

D. Hole 22.

E. Hole 14.

F. Hole 15.

G. Hole A.

H. Hole 16.

I. Hole 8.

J. Hole B (long tee).

K. Hole C (long tee).

L. Hole 9.

M. HPC's Hole B.

N. HPC's Hole C.

O. Hole 19.

P. Hole 2.

Q. Hole 21.

R. Hole 13.

Final Round of 4 Holes for top 4 Pros only:

Hole 1.

Hole 2.

Hole 3.

Hole 22.

ONLY 4 holes; any ties after that will play CTP on Hole 5. Any more than that and we'll pass our 10pm curfew (plus we might have some younger Ams or folks who have to drive a long way).

I've tried to take into consideration all suggestions for safari holes, except going across the lake. Just can't get it to flow well with an 18-hole format. Also, the fishing derby always leaves tons of debris close to shore (hooks, line, more hooks, dead fish & bait). Not a pretty teepad. We might also have some anglers unwilling to vacate their spot while it is still light out (these guys take their fishing seriously!).

I think its a good mix of holes, especially for the glow(ish) round. These will not all be easy holes; you will need to use your entire arsenal to get through this layout. A real test of skill!

Potential timeline:

Round 1 Tee-off at 3pm, will probably last 1.5 hours.

Break from 4:30-5:30.

Round 2 Tee-off at 5:45. This round will probably last 2+ hours (more woods, getting dark).

Good point. In the past, I usually got out a few days before the tourney and measured. Simply didn't have time for the HPC. Because of the new permanent hole additions, my guess is that a few folks will be out there with me over the next month working on the course, so we should have plenty of opportunity to do the measuring.

We could pre-print the teecards to be placed at the holes and 2-3 guys can put them up during lunch break. Shouldn't take too long. That's why I put the weirder holes in Round 1, saving work for Round 2.

Website is now updated!

jim

Co-TD. And yes, I'd love to TD an event with you Shawn!  I'd also love to see you play in the tourney.

As for making holes easier, take another look at the hole descriptions. Those ain't easy, baby!  Not only is everyone playing the same holes, but we're using some of the longer alternates, new perm holes (which many won't be too familiar with), and it will be partial glow. I really want to make this a challenge for everyone.

If that is sissified, then I'm Merideth Baxter Birney!

:-)

jim

Maybe we can make a road trip later in the year! I've never played in the capital city. Is it 18 holes?

jim

We bumped them up by $5 each. Website will get updated soon.

Also, can people post flyers please???

If you need 'em, call me.
