I wonder how much the turnout is going to be affected by the PDGA site being down.

Anyone looking for a doubles partner for Saturday? Tate is bringing another guy from Kzoo and he doesn't have a partner. I don't know the guy but Tate said he's rated around 930 and that's MI 930. Let me know ASAP please!

Okay what is MI 930? Why don't you join the California/Texas/North Carolina thread.

Just a joke Tom, I know what you are talking about. I retract my comment I guess, but that's just how it is in the land of Chuck Kennedy.

Memorial disc golf tournament draws nearly 200

CEDAR LAKE | Upon returning from the disc golf tournaments he participated in, Matt "Homie" Lovasko sometimes reported things didn't "fly" as well as they should have.

"At times he remarked that they didn't do this, or didn't have this for the golfers," Matt's mother Charlene said. "Most often he complained about the lack of food and beverages at the course, and that they had to travel out of their way for a fast-food lunch."

If only Matt were alive today, for he surely would have preferred the "Homie Cooking" that graced the memorial disc golf tournament that bears his name.

"We feed them twice ... for lunch and dinner," said Matt's step-father and Charlene's husband Jim Donovan, who was preparing a big vat of fire-grilled Italian beef for the nearly 200 participants of the sixth-annual Homie's Fall Classic that took place Oct. 12 at Lemon Lake Park.

"I don't disc golf," Donovan said. "I just do the cooking. This is a big event for the area, and it keeps getting bigger."

Lovasko was one of the top amateur disc golfers in the nation, and was on the verge of turning pro before an apartment fire claimed the Munster native's life in September of 2001.

"When he was alive, Matt always brought people together," said avid disc golfer Chris Diamond, who was unable to participate in the tournament due to a knee injury, yet assisted with the organization.

"A lot of people from around the country travel long distances to be here," Diamond said. "It's a great tribute."

Originally, the memorial tournament took place on Mother's Day of 2002 at a rain-swept Riverside Park in Hammond. Later, it was moved to the fall and relocated at Lemon Lake, which now has a Red, Blue, Silver and Gold course, as well as a nine-hole miniature course.

"It's become one of the best courses around," said Crown Point resident Kathy Bundy, whose husband David was Matt's doubles partner.

Though Charlene considers this time of the year "bittersweet" as Matt's birthday was earlier in the week ("He would have been 30," she said.), the generation range of the tourney's participants raises here spirits.

"You see the past, present and future of the sport," she said. "It was something Matt loved to do, and I knew he was doing it with the right crowd.

"I gave a speech at the start, and I mentioned the tornado, the flooding and all the other stuff that has gone on this year. But the worst of times can bring out the best in people. Matt died eight days after 9-11. It was a terrible time for everyone. Now when I see all these people come out and come together because of Matt ... it's wonderful to watch."
