No. I think you have to be a non-dues paying member for at least 5 years. You might not find this documented anywhere though so a call to the PDGA office or an e-mail to the PDGA office is probably the best approach to answer the specific question.

Not for tournaments that have been processed.  Yes for tournaments that get processed after his membership renewal gets processed.  You might be able to renew in January and get points for Joliet and northern Indiana tournaments.   :o   ;D   >:D

Any word on reduced member fees for 2008 without the magazine?

I didn't renew this year or play more than 2 tournaments because I was putting a lot of work into my condo, but I'm planning to renew again next year. Just curious, because at $50 I have to play 10 tournaments to justify the membership fee.

I didn't think they were going to have a magazine optional membership for 2008. I thought they were taking bids to replace Disc Golf World as the official publication of the PDGA.

From the 8/15 Board meeting minutes:

Upcoming Deadlines – FYI
The office will need to order membership and informational brochures (What is Disc Golf?) no
later than Oct. 1st in order to have them ready for the upcoming 2008 season. We will need to
know the following no later than the Summit in order to stay on our annual schedule:
· membership rate changes for 2008, if any
· Cost for the new magazine optional membership
· Cost for the new supporting level membership

btw if you're looking for the minutes, the minutes are not strictly in chronological order. 8/15/07 is up about 5 slots from where it should be. (between 4/4/07 and 4/18/07)

For the question regarding rates. The summit is Th/Fr (9/20-21) this week. Hopefully something will be made public early next week.

PDGA Selects Magazine Provider

The PDGA Board of Directors has selected Rich Givens and 4141 Disc Golf
as the official magazine provider for the organization beginning in January
2008. The selection is the end result of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for
magazine services that the association released earlier this year.

The new magazine will be 100% full color gloss, approximately 8 3/8" x 10
7/8", and wrapped in a heavier, glossy cover stock with perfect binding. The
provider will be using recycled (90%-99% post consumer waste) paper stock
inside and out. There will be no fewer than 80 interior pages, including 14
full color pages dedicated to PDGA news. The publication will be produced
bi-monthly (6 issues per year), providing extensive coverage and time
sensitivity to calendars, announcements and communication to our members.
The tone of the magazine is planned to be contemporary and insightful with
content and organization consistent with other successful sport and
alternative sport publications. The magazine will include regular features
and columns, reader feedback forums, humor, advertising and editorial.
Contributors and staff writers will include prominent figures in the disc golf
community, as well as non-disc literary professionals.

The anticipated newsstand price of the magazine will be $4.95 per issue or
$29.70 per year but the PDGA has contracted to pay a special discounted
rate of approximately $15 per year to include the magazine as a benefit of
membership. Members wishing to opt out of receiving the magazine will be
offered a $10 discount off of the standard membership fees in 2008.

The PDGA Board and staff look forward to the release of the first issue with
great anticipation and we encourage all members to support this endeavor by
choosing to receive the magazine.

At less than $2 per issue, just get the magazine. Unless of course you are already living on Ramen noodles and Mac and Cheese.

I'm surprised they are doing perfect binding over saddle stitching for "over 80 pages". Over 80 pages would usually mean 5 books (80 pages) plus the cover. I don't think I've ever seen a magazine do perfect binding for only 5 books. I know Dan's reaction to my post is going to be "Hey perfect binding is in the top 5 of my favorite bindings!" but I am curious about this. I really like perfect binding over saddle stitching but it is more expensive.

Its seems that a lot of posters in PDGAland have a hard time with the magazine.  I thought it was ok.  Its especially nice to get something in the winter to psych you up for  the upcoming season.  If anything it seems the bid was pretty low.  I hope the new vender can deliver what they promise.  For $2 an issue I will certainly get the magazine.  I waste much more money on Ace funds at tournaments.  I am sure I will find something worth reading for my two bucks.  Lets make sure the new people get lots of nice pictures of disc golf action in our part of the world.

Bruce Brakel

Usually when you see something like that it's because he has that equipment for some other publication he's producing, so it's cheaper to use that than to go buy other equipment or subcontract the binding to someone who can use a cheaper process.

It's like one time I drew up some D&D notes on translucent vellum.  Later someone asked me why did you use expensive vellum instead of ordinary graph paper and my answer was, they were throwing out the expensive vellum where I was working, so it wasn't all that expensive.

I would like to see the first magazine. If it's got some useful articles and information i'd like it. I'm still waiting for my copy of DGW for this fall. It has yet to arrive yet. Most of the information in DGW is old news and some old event from the 80's. I actually like Disc Golf Magazine.
