I'm hoping there are some other residents of Gilberts that frequent this site.

I've been going to the Parks Committee meetings in Gilbertshttp://www.villageofgilberts.com/minutes/2006/Parks/PARKS060705.pdf lately and they are considering setting up a Disc Golf course in town.  Although the Parks Committee is in favor of the idea, the Village Board seems to need some convincing.

I don't live in Gilberts, but I know that general area could certainly use a course!  The closest thing out there is Lippold (10 miles away).  Maybe even Huntley would be a good spot too.  But hey, if Gilberts is talking about it, let's get something there :)

Any idea what is holding them back on the issue?

Not really sure.  I know part of it is the proposed location.  The county is trying to get them to put a turn lane in and the Village doesn't want to cover the cost.  But it seems like the Village President might have his own reasons.

Who knows, maybe he just isn't happy it wasn't his idea.

Anyone have any ideas how we can change his mind?  Anyone insterested/willing to start attending the parks committee meetings with me?  I'm guessing I'll have to start going to the Village Board meetings also (joy).

I don't live in Gilberts, however that location is only about 10 minutes away from my house. I'd be really happy if they put another course that close by to me.

Anyone know if there was any progress made on putting in a course in Gilberts?  Huntley would be another good place for a course... still quite a bit of open areas out that way

Well, I've gone as far as joining the Gilberts Parks Committee.  The committee is still discussing it.  Only myself and one other committee member really seem to care if we get a course or not.  We are being faced with an issue from the County regarding the lack of a turn lane by the park that is currently targeted.  The county wants there to be a turn lane and nobody wants to pay for it.  I'll try and make sure it stays on our monthly agendas but I wouldn't expect to see any course popping up in Gilberts within the next year.

I'm actually kind of hoping we can change the target location to 28-acres that are currently ear marked for future park use in the new Ryland Town Center subdivision off RT 72 in Gilberts.

Thanks for taking such an active role in promoting disc golf.

Here's to persistence...  The Gilberts Parks committe voted unanimously last month to install a 9 hole course at the location I posed above...  It only took me two years to win them over...

Of course, the village will pay for the targets and tee signs, and rental equipment, but the course has to be designed and installed by volunteers...

I'm apparenlty in charge of this.  I still have to pick the weekend that we are going to work on this but if any of you are interested, PLEASE contact me...  pato513@yahoo.com...  Mention Gilberts Disc Golf in the subject so I don't think it is junk mail or anything...

We'll have to clear all the brush, install the targets and tees, everything...

allowing fellow disc golfers help layout and install the course may be a little time consuming, but well worth it in the end :)

Paging Brett - Paging Brett - definitely a great opportunity to help with the design and layout! :)

I would be interested in helping with design if this course has some quality land to work with like Libertyville or Gurnee. If it's wide open with no potential i'll sit that one out.

I've seen the lot they're planning on using and I give it a 7 or 8 out of 10.  There's a lot of brush right now, but once it's cleaned out, there would be a few more open holes but plenty of trees and a little elevation to utilize.  Pat says the size is 28 acres, but I'm not sure we would do the lot justice if we forced 18 holes onto it.  Nine or twelve is a better idea, that way there will be room for a few holes longer than 500 feet.

For now, we'll be limited to 9 holes, and dirt tees...  Assuming all goes well, I'll try to get cement tees next year...

pato513

I talked with the Gilberts village administrator today and the targets have been ordered.  We should have them in the next 2-3 weeks.  We are going with the Innova DISCatcher Pro targets and either the Gold or Platinum level signs.

I've reserved two brush cutters and am getting together with a couple friends to go clear a loop through the park so that we can hopefuly start doing actual course design next week.

pato513

Well, the village of Gilberts went thru some turn-over at the board level which killed the project for awhile.  But I've been talking with the village president and the project is coming back to life, and they still have the targets they purchased in storage..

I went over there with a friend on Jan 15 (2011) to see how bad the brush looked.  Fortunately, the path we cut two years ago was still somewhat usable.  I'm planning to head over there with a chain saw and various hand tools to try to mark where we are thinking the tees and targets should go...

let us know if you need help. i live in CL so im not far away

pato513

We actually went out there on Jan 29.  We did a rough clearing of the first hole and and staked off the first 7 holes.  We were having issues with our chain saw which is why we only worked on the first hole.  One of the guys helping me and I are both planning to buy new chain saws for our next trip over there.  Depending on the weather, we are currently considering heading over there on Feb 26th and or 27th.  If you are interested in helping let me know, and let me know if you have any tools that you can bring to help out with.

If anyone knows anyone who might be willing to donate the use of a brush mower, that would REALLY help.

So a buddy of mine and I both bought new chainsaws, next time we head out, we'll have 3 chainsaws on hand.  Don't suppose anyone has access to a walk behind or tow behind brush mower?  Or a tractor with PTO for that matter (I have access to a brush hog for use with PTO but the tractor it is used with is currently not functional).
