The serious topic for me was the con con (Call for an Illinois State Constitutional Convention) It affect me as a teacher so it was #1 on my list.

What is the big impact to teachers?

Mainly item #2 for me. I want to retire and play disc golf.

They are absolutely right.  I thought the best ad of the political season was one with Jim Edgar and Dawn Clark Netsch jointly saying that Con Con is a bad idea. They had run against each other for Governor and likely do not agree on many issues. That was a pretty good bipartisan ad.

If by some chance the con con is passed it would be good for the Illinois teacher's association to lobby to get their pension not only guaranteed but also backed with actual money. They ought to switch over to some kind of 401k plan with a good match. That way there's actual money in an actual account with your name on it. If I'm elected Governor of Illinois I'll make some changes to our wasteful spending, streamline the Illinois government and make sure that the things that count like education and people's retirements are planned for in advance!

Well, that's a kind of funny thing to say in these times.  That pension pays out the same today as it did last month.  Next month it will likely pay out the same.  A 401k?  Well, to say the least , values have diminished recently.  A govermnent pension is a reasonably solid bet on the future.  A guy in his early 30's like Coach C might say that a 401k will have more upside by the time he nears retirement.  I bet the Athletic Director at Libertyville(who I presume is much closer to retirement and the golf course of his choice) is much happier with his pension than thinking he could be nearing retirement and having a 401k that has dropped precipitiously in the past month or so. There is simply not enough time left for those guys to recoup what they just lost.  The young guys can wait it out.  I think you just creeped out any government employee or teacher who has more than 15 or so years in and certainly any retiree.  You wouldn't get their vote.

Now if you said this  last year you would have had a lot of people looking at fixed incomes for their retirement saying, "Hey, yeah, sounds good to me. I know I coulda done a lot better investing my money."

Jon Brakel

401k management. If you are within 5 years of retirement you should NOT have your 401k in stocks. I would say that at 10 years out you should start divesting out of stocks. Not all at once. Start with the most volatile and then work your way down.

I hear what you're saying David, but it's harder to take away actual money in an actual account with an actual name than it is to change the Illinois State constitution.

Took the kids this morning. At 7AM we had to wait 30-40 minutes in line, mostly due to the number of people there whose last name started in the same range. In two previous elections I've never had to wait in line other than for a booth to open up.

Answered No to LCFP. They already have enough land thats sitting not being used.
Yes to the Con Con cuz AFAIK its the only way to get a recall provision into state law although admittedly I didn't read up much on the issue.

The state constitution can be amended.  A proposal to put a recall amendment on today's ballot was defeated in the state senate this past spring.

Obama wins Ohio?

Yes. 199 to 78

I've got to figure that even in Ohio more than 277 people managed to vote. What are those numbers Arok? They look more like projected electoral wins so far rather than the results from Ohio.

I think he was reporting total electoral votes up until now.

Either way, anything projected as a W for Obama when he's down 44% to 56% is kind of silly if you ask me (or flip that around, regardless of who you are voting for).

Yes those are the projected electoral votes. I should have said that, my bad.

Popular vote looks pretty neck and neck so far. I can't see how McCain can win the electoral vote. I'll tell ya, CNN has some pretty killer demographic models. I wonder how long these people had to rehearse with the smart boards and touch screens...

The balance of power is looking pretty interesting as well. Wow
