Maybe not the ATV's alone, but perhaps in conjunction with damage to park property....

It makes sense they won't file an insurance claim, especially with a deductable so high. I wonder why they wouldn't want to call the cops, tho.

A new top assembly for the basket will run between 150 & 200. Maybe it could be a future good will donation from the club to the park department?

If the whole basket minus the assembly was recovered then you'd think that the assembly has to be somewhere out there..

About the new pin placement by the creek, I thought WPD didn't want to do that because the course map would be wrong. Have they changed their mind, or is that the reason for the 'maybe'?

QuoteJim (08-28-2003 11:52 a.m.):

Yeah, the WPD doesn't want to permanently move basket 9 because it would invalidate the legend/map at Tee 1.  However.... Brett had an idea about adding another pin placement in front of the creek between the two birch trees. We could move the pin for leagues and tourneys, then move it back to the original placement when done. The map would still be correct, but we'd get what we want.  I'll run it by the WPD this week.

I thought that was the whole point of the alternate placement, more of a summer thing for when soccer's so bad.

two baskets in there at the same time?

Scary. All the more reason to get our baskets engraved.

anybody know how long it takes quikrete to dry? basically I'm wondering if we could use the new placement for 9 on Sunday.

Guess we need to get a pole hole cover now so it doesn't get messed up by the lawn mower.

Shawn's points are valid, even though I've seen more cars hit by discs. :-)  The Supt of Parks left me a message last week in which he said he'd be open to discussing adding permanent or practice holes. Last year, he spoke of moving the 9th basket.  I've drawn up a few different plans to show him when we meet this week. I've taken the ideas of some members and tried to make them mesh with certain park district ideas/limitations.  I plan to get as much info as possible and set up a plan stretching 3-5 years to continually upgrade the course - and/or add another.  But I think it is possible to get three more holes by summer.

Also - I just finished the local sponsorship packet and will have copies available by the Jan 27th, the first Best Shot of the year. When clinched, the 1st Sponsorship Option would give us enough for a permament basket.  The 2nd Option would be enough for a practice basket.  Or teepads. Although the Park District seems to be willing to invest some money, it will be awesome to contribute some metal of our own.  If you have not already, email the park district with positive suggestions.  It helps if they receive written backup to what I'm telling them.  Thanks!  Let's turn the world on!

Waukegan Park District's email:

wkparks@waukeganparks.org

Please direct all emails to Mike Trigg, Superintendent of Parks.

Once again, thanks and keep those emails positive.  We are SO CLOSE to really jumping into a long-term relationship. This Spring could be big, and the future could open up many new possibilities.  Thanks for all the suport you guys are showing - both for the club and for the sport!

jim

Texas?  We have a couple of folks from the Lone Star state in our club!  I have never played there, but I just spoke to a guy to helps run the Circular Productions Ranch near Austin. They have 2 great championship level courses there which I hear are FLY!

Glad to hear of new folks starting to play the best sport in the world.  If you don't find what you need from http://discontinuum.org, try out pdga.com, disclife.com, and Scott Stokely's websites (pdga.com/vendors link).  They will also help steer you in the right direction.  Good luck!  Please check back to our little Midwestern site because we are constantly updating it!

Also, Mr. Texan:  to actually answer your questions:

Some simple things to keep in mind when throwing:

Follow-through your armswing motion.

Keep the disc level.  try throwing straight from shoulder level. Then try it again from waist level - again throwing level (straight).

Remember snapping towels by the pool? Try to imagine your arm as the wet towel. When you release, you want to SNAP that sucker!  Your wrist should be very loose. That will increase the speed and spin of the disc. Once you try it, keep doing it. Your distance will improve quickly, and accuracy after that.

Brett - what a cool idea! I never even thought of taking a picture of the tee signs! Although the pics seem a little dark, I can lighten them in PhotoShop and post 'em on da website. How very cooooool, dude! Upgrading the Bevier Park portion of the site is definitely near the top of my to-do list.  Thanks for all the effort and help making our site look good.

I wonder if this Rene guy was speaking truthfully.  Scott MacLean was so adamant about the park being a PUBLIC place, open to everyone!  He actually said that we have no real alternative other than working it out with the soccer players ourselves.  He said nothing about the police (whom he said are there primarily for baseball games' crowd control, etc.),

I will call Mike Trigg and demand an official answer from him.  This is getting frigging ridiculous, especially if this Rene guy is telling the truth!

jim

Like sands through the hourglass, so are the discs of our lives . . . . .

OK. I spoke with Mike Trigg just now.  Here's a quick list of what Mike told me:

This Rene fellow files a formal complaint against the soccer players which Mike has forwarded to other WPD people to follow up on.

Mike Trigg now says that the soccer players may not obstruct the dg course, but may play in open spaces not on the course and must give ample room for errant throws.

Also, the police will be there every day (hired by WPD) there is a baseball or soccer game to to general policing.

Also, the soccer players in the Wkgn Adult Hispanic Soccer Assn do pay to be there - but only for official games on Sunday on the soccer field and that money goes straight into upkeep of that soccer field.

Mike says he will try to get the soccer players to give us a bit more space and to limit themselves to non-discgolfcourse areas.

I say we give it another week or two before we move league night to Friday.  Let's see what happens. I'd rather not inconvenience our members, but I don't want a war with the soccer players either.  Okey-Dokey?

BTW, Mike called me back BEFORE 8am today, and was very happy, polite, helpful, and eager to help us.  He also said we can count on the wood chips for the WB.

Things are looking up......

jim

That works for me; dunno about most other folks.  I left a message for Mike Trigg and Scott MacLean to call me today. The more I think about this, the more irritated I get.  There are acres of land right across the street (landfill) which Scott MacLean said would be perfect for soccer players; he also said he had no idea why Mike Trigg did not want people doing anything more than walking on that parcel of land. There is also room across Yorkhouse at McCall school.  OK, Jim; take a breath.  Calm blue ocean.......

If anyone gets out tonight and sees this Renee guy, please get as much detailed info from as possible about EXACTLY what the WPD said to him.  I mean, come on, do we really need to get the police involved?  If he is just blowing smoke and we ask cops for assistance, we could not only get the WPD pissed at us, but more importantly, get the soccer players pissed, which would most likely turn all this into a physical confrontation.

jim

Anything but Crudweiser, please!

I just checked out the doppler radar, Yahoo weather, and the Weather channel:  rain, t-storms, more rain.  Who cares?  Let's play!

jim

Let's throw some mud onto Bill's van - THAT cud be our spotted cow.  Sorry.  Cudn't resist.  Resistance is FUTON!  Those microbrews from Stevens Point were EXCELLENT!  Anytime anyone wants to take a day and play Token Creek and StevPoint, let me know.  oooooh. I envision a commercial:

good beer ...... good friends ...... tacoed discs ......

must be WISCONSIN!

Mirth, feel free to cut this thread anytime....

jim

Shaking and spanking are one and the same thing to SOME people . . . . .

jim

I've updated the discgolf.com (via PDGA) course info TWICE since we installed the alternate tees!  Someone names Lemontree Watson keeps changing it;  I've emailed him, asking him to stop giving wrong info, but he has not responded - except by resending the bad info.  Now that Marty Hapner is no longer the discgolf.com's webmaster, I'll ust have to keep changing it back.  Thanks for checking!

jim

We'll discuss chain upgrades at the meeting on Sept 29th.  It is on the list of "To Dos", and we will vote on how we want our money spent. We have a limited amount of $$, and we are looking at spending money on:

chain upgrades

incorporation fees

insurance

club shirts

club discs

future events

juniors leagues
