Really the best way to deal with the trophy-only trophy receiving players is for me to take time to review the division before I start announcing out awards.  We could come up with some code on the card, but what I really need to do is take a moment to review the division so I know that stuff.

When we get to awards I want to move fast because taking forever to get to awards and then doing them in slow motion are tournament peeves of mine.  It is the one thing i don't like about -- well, just about every tournament I go to -- is that they are not ready to do awards at the end of the tournament and then they take forever getting them done.

And a lot of players like the fact that at the end of the tournament we do awards right away.  What are those other TDs doing?

The bar worked fine for getting all of the payout positions correct. It was more of a notation thing so that when he saw the card with a 3 on it, Bruce needed to know that the player was just getting the 3rd place payout, but not the 3rd place trophy. He hadn't yet gotten to the trophy only card in his hand.

Ah, I misunderstood. I couldn't pass on a chance to take a dig at Bruce though. You guys have no idea how he treated me when I was a little kid...I'm not even 1/10th of the way back to even!

I think when we take the boards over to Bruce we should review trophy only, half-in and no trophy situations with him. We do the awards fast enough that I think we can take 1 or 2 minutes to review those things. I do know that we are pretty fast with payout because almost no one asks to be paid out early anymore...and those that do are usually first time IOS players.

I recreated the registration cards within Excel and changed up a few things if you're interested in seeing it.  They are also sized (although I found it still has to be trimmed on the right some) to fit on the scorepointe's without slipping into the board and disappearing.  The scorepointe has faults of its own though.

I changed it to have a box for round one, a box for round two, a box for total, and a box for place (I believe your cards have Rd 1-3, then total).  I also added a spot on the card to mark if they are in the ace fund - another backup to verify they are in the pool, updated the $5 to $10 if they are not-current, and I think I made the spot for their names a bit larger.

Jon - were you guys looking to get new Scorepointe's or Gateway scoreboards?  I can PM you about it.

The tent is awesome.

I have moved this question to the TD Corder.

I am back into the sport after an 18 year hiatus, and I'm very excited to be getting involved in helping to direct tournaments. I have found that the ScorePointe score board is currently sold-out EVERYWHERE until October or November. I have at least two local tournaments coming up before then, and I was wondering if any of the TD's out there could recommend the best way to buy/make a score card display system. Any help would be appreciated.

I have tried both the PDGA Pro Shop and ScorePointe.com (which is actually Ching) to no avail.

Thanks

Gateway also makes tournament scoreboards, which is what the club and the IOS TDs have been using until recently upgrading to the ScorePointe's.

The Gateway boards are designed for foursomes on every hole but a 5th can be added in the hole number pocket.

Do you have a web address for Gateway Tournament Scoreboards? I've tried Google, and several Gateway re-sellers, but no one seems to carry a Scoreboard. I'm thinking louvered shutters may be my best bet.

The cheapest way to do score boards is to use a pin board and push pins.  This is how Jon and I did Lizard Doubles, the MDGOs at Flip City and Kensington and Shadow Doubles.  Did we do any IOS tournaments that way?  After two or three years of that, Jon got a deal on the Gateway scoreports.

Usually we used to cork pin boards I scavenged from work.  Once we used a picnic table, unless i'm thinking of what Schwass did the next day for the singles.  One time I forgot the cork boards and we used a sheet of styrofoam we scavenged from Bill's barn.

Jon, tell me none of this ever happened!

if you run a Gateway sponsored event, they'll even send you the scoreboards to use.  Email office@gdstour.com if you want to get more information about Gateway tournaments.

I have created this thread as a tool for me and other TDs that would like access to the tools. Unless otherwise specified you may treat these files as open source documents.

Here I have posted the pdf of the registration cards that we have used with the Gateway leader boards. If anyone wants the original that I made with Adobe PageMaker 7, let me know. I can't post that kind of file on this board.

Jon,

Can you post the new registration card document that you are using on the Score Pointe?

Sure, but I have a really busy weekend and I can't do it from work, so if you don't see it by Sunday, remind me again. Tonight I'm doing the video from the press box at the Wildcats game (marching band show) and then on Saturday I'm running two of the four video cameras for the marching band festival (I'm doing the two side lines cameras).

That is cool. I'll remind you. I don't need it immediately. Within the next week would be good.

I am going to try something different for the Bloomington Normal Open since it's PreReg only. I am going to use all white cardstock for all the registration cards. I'm going to use a different color marker for every division. That should save me from the guessing game of the # of cards to print for each division.

That's a cool idea. Let me know how it works. The last few IOS events I've been printing the division on the card from the file. So, you want a pdf version with the division blank?

This post is for all those TDs reading who use paypal to take pre-reg and who run basket raffles or other unlicensed raffles at their tournaments.

I was told at the Tobbogan yesterday that the reason why a recent A-tier had to do cashless honor-system pre-reg was because in addition to taking pre-reg on paypal they were also taking basket raffle money.  When Paypal found out that they were being used to operate an illegal raffle, they froze the tournament director's account.

If you are going to run illegal basket raffles or bucket games, don't run them on Paypal!

I was speaking with a couple other players in Madison the other day about a problem we've shared.

Many players are like myself in that they have full-time jobs with a limited number of vacation days which need to be scheduled out in advance.  In the spring I usually scan the PDGA Tour page for events I want to play and make sure I can take off work if necessary, or make sure other summer plans are scheduled around the disc golf events I wish to play.

It seems this year alot of tournaments (not just IOS) have been throwing up their event on the PDGA Tour schedule at the last second.  In some situations I'm sure this can't be avoided, but I really believe this practice does a disservice to the TD who desires a large field of players, and espeically to a TD who desires a large amount of pre-registration.

I've spoken with more than 1 player who didn't play an event because they didn't know about it due to it not being on the PDGA schedule, and also multiple players who made other plans because they didn't realize there would be a tournament on that date.

I'm just throwing this out there for any TD's looking to maximize their turnouts.  The PDGA schedule is the easiest resource the players have for discovering tournaments, so do yourself a favor and get it on there atleast 2 months in advance!

I agree with Dan that this is a problem. There paperwork issues for TD's with sanctioned tournaments.  Without putting more pressure on State Coordinators such as Brett and Terry et. al. it helps to have a running list of the proposed tournaments posted somewhere.  I know we all saw a list of Illinois events early in the season and some of those events have not happened.  It would be better if the threshold for listing something on PDGA was easier and things could be worked out while the event is listed.

stpitner

I really like what Brett did this year in getting the dates together early - although it was difficult for people to find that info unless they knew to come here.  I'm glad that it wasn't super public as there were a lot of changes to that list.

What I'd really like to see more is more coordination with the surrounding states - especially Wisconsin and Indiana.  Then we can focus on trying to make sure the annual huge events in each of the states don't step on each other's toes.  That will allow players to be able to freely go from one tournament to another without having to make the decisions on which ones to go play.
