My three favorite Westerns:

The Magnificent 7-Yul Brenner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, and others as the ultimate cool group.  Eli Wallach as the philosophical bad guy. My personal favorite.

Rio Bravo- I am not a big John Wayne fan, but he was at his John Waynest in this movie.  A gimpy  Walter Brennan who was called Stumpy was great and having Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson sing in a western is a bonus.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance- John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Lee Marvin at his worst. It is B&W, which may not be your thing, but it is an excellent story, and the line at the end of the film is a classic.

Honorable mention:
Silverado
The Professionals
Ride the High Country
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Add to Tom's good list-Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and a wicked Gene Hackman and a very haunting one called Dead Man with Johnny Depp and a score by Neil Young.

never got into the westerns too much - but occasionally (when i had cable) would flip onto AMC and watch some of those old wayne movies like north to alaska and others.  i really enjoyed em'.  true american grit, great characters, and no influence of political correctness.

Thre Real Dirt on Farmer Joe - saw this last night, it is a movie about man who is given a farm that has been in his family for generations and what he does with it.  i nearly walked out of the theater within the first five minutes when they showed him in a really weird outfit riding around on his tractor looking like a complete fruit cake, but i'm glad i stayed.  the story, which is real, was good.  the charecters were just like people that you or i know and the actual place where this takes place isnt more than a few miles from where i live, which was the driving reason for me seeing it.  it paints a good picture of life on the farm, rural america, and how those two things have changed over the last 80 years.  the main charecter can wear a little thin at times but the overall story is worth a vewing.

One Fierce Beer Run - this is another true story about life on the road with the rock group - the bloodhound gang.  if your familiar with their songs and like their brand of humor you'll enjoy the dvd.  it is kinda like a jackass but with a good soundtrack and some funnier skits.  lots of fart and genital jokes and a couple good fights too.

so anybody going to see DaVinci Code this weekend?
I saw it and meh....it was good, just wasn't extroidinary.  I may have been a victim of hype and thought it was going to be better.  I was thinking "Tom Banks (I mean Hanks )and Ron Howard, how could you go wrong...

I have heard from several people that read the book that the movie was one of the best ever to be done.

IMO it was an entertaining movie but never pulled me in 100% and even dragged in some spots.  I just became uncomfortable and wanted it to end...(2 1/2 hours long)

saw the divinci code last night - it reminded me of a two hour episode of matlock starring tom hanks.  for how cool the movie could have been i would have to say that it only deserves a star and a half at most.  worst part was that there was probably 35 minutes of commercials to sit through before the movie began.

here's a theory - the producers did the movie at about 75% of what their talent and resources would allow, knowing that the movie would get a big draw no matter if it was a four star movie or two star.

pretty much a waste of eight bucks

Anyone seen The Departed yet? I figure it's good without needing anyone's opinion, but was wondering.

With the season winding down I'm on movies & TV vs. discs.   :-\

Saw a great movie called "Brick" last night.

Good cast, quirky characters, convoluted plot.
Won the Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize, not that a prize makes a movie any better, but it IS good.

Maybe this should now be called the Netflix/Winter thread    :icon_spiderman:

My 3 are:

The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly.  Awesome Clint Eastwood Western, best of the spaghetti-westerns. Can't say enough about Eli Wallach's character, Tuco, and Lee Van cleef as Angel Eyes. Ennio Morricone's music & Sergio Leone's direction = awesome.

Once Upon A Time in the West: Best Charles Bronson ever. Henry Fonda also good, seemingly the mold for the Bill character in Kill Bill.

Unforgiven. Ahh, Clint Eastwood with a gun in hand.

I've seen almost all of Tom's list and agree that they are good, just not as near to my heart as these. I definetly second the comments about Rio Bravo & John Wayne, but that would be my favorite of the JW movies.

Also in my good Westerns list:
Any Clint Eastwood (Hang 'Em High, High Plains Drifter, etc.)
Tombstone (best Val Kilmer acting role)

CEValkyrie

I saw it Friday night. Very good movie if you like violence which I do. A lot of good actors in this one. Other than the ending it was well worth it.

Saw "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang" the other night.

OK movie if you like the main character talking to you in narration. VERY HOT Michelle Monaghan with red hair. Worth a rental.

Saw it last night at the chicago premiere.  I won tickets on the Johnny B show on 97.9 on the way to work when I called in and got into a Borat impersonation contest.  They had me and another guy going back and forth at each other for a few minutes, it was hilarious.  Anyways, the movie was great.  Complete shock entertainment from beginning to end.

Saw Borat! yesterday. If you get offended by things, have a hard time laughing at yourself or if you do not care for black comedy, this is not for you. If not- its pee in your pants funny. I think the litmus test for Borat! is the TV show Curb Your Enthusiasm. The director, Larry Charles, is common to both. if you dig Curb I suspect "you like" Borat. I have a sick sense of humor so I laughed so hard it hurt.

Saw Running With Scissors tonight. Such a bizarre film its hard to believe that parts or all of it is true....
