I couldn't find the info on the board, does anyone know if there was an ace hit last year in Crystal Lake?  Also, what is the ace pot at right now?  This is going to be a great event this weekend.

No aces were hit last year at Crystal Lake because from the Rockford thread they said about $580 rolled over (and then I remember that none were hit at Rockford and they made a $1000 pot for Streamwood where a couple aces were hit by some peeps).  Kinda surprising no aces were hit at Lippold on Saturday (sunday's weather was terrible)... LOTS of aceable holes.

Will the tees be clearly defined this weekend?  Maybe with some spray paint or something.  When I played there last weekend the tees, or what they call tees are large and not clear as to the start/stop.  I mainly ask because most of the tee areas that are the crushed stone have hills or big dips in them that seem dangerous.

First IOS of the year, looking forward to it

Brett will clearly define tees with flags. I think Brett posted a description of the tee locations somewhere.

a michigan dude did hit a $750 ace last year at crystal lake on saturday.  money rolled over because the ace was capped at 750 and a reserve fund had money in it.  also no aces were hit that sunday.

thanks for the correction Dan... it was hole 9 wasn't it?  Something in the back of my mind was telling me that #9 was hit while I was typing the post.  I should have thought it out some more before posting!

Joe Kowalski got the ace on a short hole that hyzers through some trees and the basket is near the bike path and the next fairway plays down the bike path.  It was a skip ace.  That is 8 or 9, not really sure.

hmm, both hole 8 and 9 are like that lol.  Hole 8 ONLY has a hyzer shot for righties, whereas hole 9 has a path of trees down the middle, and righties can hyzer the right path and lefties can hyzer the left path.  Both 8 and 9 have baskets near the path, and hole 10 also plays along the path, so that's why both 8 and 9 qualify based on description.  I guess we DO have pictures of the course, but why make it easy like that? ;)  The bottom line is that an ace was hit last year on Saturday.

Late Friday afternoon i'll mark all the dirt/wood chip tee pads with flags & paint. I will also be marking the alternate holes. Early Sat & Sun morning cones will be placed to mark all of the limestone pads.

hopefully hole 14 will be slightly less muddy around the tee area and then the schule will not be quite as soggy.  At least the lake that was there has drained out.  There's rain expected tomorrow, but hopefully some more sunshine will keep that as dry as possible.

I don't know if anyone would be willing to discuss tactics, but it's really more about actually executing instead of just talking about how to execute.  My question is how in the world do you play 14?  It's so tight for the first 75 feet or however long it is of woods before it opens up.  Do you take a putter and try to get through the gap and then hope for a good approach shot?  I guess it makes a big difference based upon your rating.  I have so much trouble powering through that gap even if I throw my most consistently straight driver.  That hole is pretty much my make or break hole.

I played a round there today, and deuced that hole. 3 out of the 4 of us made it to the other side. I don't know what the others were thinking. But backhand using a Wraith, I concentrated on 2 things: spin and forward motion (since I was using a long range disc that can fly on its own).

You can think about a lot of ways to attack a shot...angle, grip, speed, playing the wind, keeping it down, etc.. I took all that out of my mind, so the trees became less relevant. Just concentrated on 2 things, and if I hit the trees or didn't make it over the marshy area, I'd worry about that upshot when I got to it. Luckily it worked out...to continue my deuce-run. That was my 4th in a row.

Another guy in our group was from Wisconsin. His name is Scott. He's been playing for 10 years. I think he threw his at a slight angle. I'm not sure. So maybe he was using more of the fairway. That might be something to consider.

And the third person was from Crystal Lake. Since local players know the course the best, they might be the best people to give advice for something specific like this.

scott, if you know going into the hole that there is not a good chance of you getting out if you throw driver, then throw something you are more confident about getting out there with.  you dont' have to do what everybody else does.

i personally am going to throw my red orc under the basket on that hole, so i guess thats my tactic.

Throw something that will just cut down the trees. That way when I throw behind you I have a larger opening.  ;D

Use that Quest Turbo Putt.  It looks like it could damage some trees!

Think positive, not "I've got to get out" or "I've just got to miss that first tree".  Just think of the line through the gap and what the disc will do after.  If you have no confidence to do that, throw a putter to land on the path a little short of the edge of the woods and use your upshot to set up the par.

you know that turbo-putt disc does kinda remind me a little bit of saw blades... ;)

Thanks for the advice Dan.  It might be more of a psychological thing for me too.  I just need to find the correct release point on the tee because I've noticed that whenever I shade a little left I'll just barely hit a tree on the left, and when I think I'm over a little to the right of that spot (enough to get away from that tree) I end up whacking a tree on the right.

But I don't have the D for a deuce on that hole anyway usually.  So maybe putter / decent approach / good putt is my better shot.

I guess I know where I'll be all Sunday morning lol.  Try to work on that hole!

All of the comments are appreciated.  It was so frustrating when I played there last Sunday.  I birdied 12 on a good putt (good gravy is that an evil hole for lefties), birdied 13 with a 100' putt, and then I go whack a tree on 14, have a tough recovery shot, not the greatest approach, shank putt, and wind up with a 5.  There goes those two birdies!

lol, you and I think alike about that Turbo Putt!

Definitely a confidence factor.  Just remind myself - I can hit the gap on hole 7 and hole 8 at Oak Brook with great frequency... this is NO different, and then just nail it.  I think it will help once I see the tee flagged because playing casually we frequently change up where to tee from.
