While we are trying to get more courses installed, should we try Grayslake? I was looking on their map & they have a park that is 48 Acres & it only has a picnic area. I have no clue what is at this park. Also, I found this to be quite interesting. They have a 9 hole ball golf course that is 20 Acres. I would think 20-25 Acres would be plenty for an 18 hole disc golf course. http://www.glpd.com

Good idea, Brett.  I am only afraid that we might be chewing off too much too fast.  Let's work on Round Lake, Gurnee, and Bevier upgrades first.

Grayslake is an idea place to put a disc golf course (where isn't!?!).  Lets do some research and consider making a proposal in Spring?

just thought I'd mention hearing today when buying my new house that the course at Central Park is a go... rumor had it for a july or august install.

just emailed the general contact us link to find out more info... hopefully if it is a go we can have some hand in design and/or implementation.

The reply I got from the park district is that the course is indeed going in this summer. If anyone wants the contact info for volunteering to check out the course layout & suggest improvements contact me & I will send it to you.

Played a little today in  Grayslake, 9 holes are in the ground.

What is it like?  Let me guess.
Short
Open with very few trees.
Designed by someone that does not play disc golf.
No signs
No tee pads.

They didn't even spell disc golf right   ;D.

CENTRAL PARK IMPROVEMENTS:
You may have noticed some new construction in Central Park. Installation of a new restroom facility and concession stand has recently begun. Additionally, the new developments will include picnic shelters, a playground, kids splash pad, fishing pier, a 9-hole disk golf course, interpretive trail through the oak woods, a senior plaza with bocce ball courts, shuffleboard courts and picnic shelter with game tables, a band shell and security lighting and additional pathways. We believe these improvements will complete the Central Park Master Plan and make the park more attractive for all age groups. These improvements were made possible by a $400,000 grant received from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.  Scheduled completion date is late Fall, 2006.

This is nine target course that can accommodate nine more alternates easily.
Tee pads are Limestone 3 foot by 7 foot approx...They look like they are going to be framed with landscape timbers. All Targets are surrounded with limestone landing areas.
Many holes have been cut out from overgrown grass and forest. In fact from my perspective the finishing hole has not been completed yet.  Disc-Catchers with yellow collar. Graffiti Spray-paint already on a target, that was fast, truly impressed.
You won't be digging in your bag much. One hole looks in excess of 300 ft the rest are easily reachable with mids.If you dont have an ACE this is your chance ! Full grown trees, mixed with bushes etc, poorly protected targets. Rough terrain. Great practice area, very good parking. Easy to get from hole to hole. The course has no water, very possible to lose discs in brush. Grown trees protect most baskets. If your not close off the tee you have to recover for a putt. There is no and I repeat no grip and rip it hole. Very righty friendly.
Nevertheless good to see Will get better with play. If more grass is planted and fairways are maintained.  I'm sure there will be some severe criticism,  the fact is it should be eighteen not nine. The nine that they have is lacking in creativity and effort in design. On the plus side It looks to be a good winter course and it should be very fast to play. It is nestled tightly around a central stand of forest that has stood the test of time. Blind shots and slight elevation changes, no severe angles It plays Counterclockwise, and should see significant play, if you are on a tee pad look out they are close to baskets .Wildwood players will be delighted. Younger players will flock and the girls will feel at home. Course is still in construction phase. Very much playable today. Looking forward to playing again. Like many nine hole courses it has much more potential and improvements that can be done. Would recommend to most players. Advanced arms will not be challenged , this doesn't mean you would not have fun. GO PLAY IT !

This will be the next course to be pulled in Lake County.
The total length of course is slightly longer than #18 at Fairfield.
The signature hole is a long as all the others combined.
Finishing hole is blind shot over mature thick prairie plants and vegetation.
...if you throw into it you wont want to get it.
....it will be a shame if the park district butchers it to complete the hole.
No continuity if you attempt to finish the course and want to play another round.
Your walk is longer than the entire course. Are there 9 more holes going in?
This is a dangerous course for players, but also park patrons will get blasted it's a matter of time.
Total redux is necessary to save it !

I went out  there today i thought it was ok but i lost my disc because the fairway  is all overgrown and i couldnt see were my disc landed it was coverd in thorns and burrs and stuff. I didnt like that part.

CEValkyrie

Well, i'll play this course because.
1. It's close to my house.
2. Great for upshot practice.
3. Has a vairety of wooded shots if playing alternate tees or playing from a tee to another basket.
4. I like aces ;D

The first hole is near the back of the middle school by the playground. The course ends on the west side of the park in the wooded secton across from the parking lot.

It looks like the baskets have been in the ground for quite a while. There is rust on several chains already. The tee pads are funny. They are about 3 feet wide and boxed in with wood. They are filled with limestone. If you like short walks this is the course for you. Take 5 steps from the basket and your on the next tee. Once I found hole #1 the only hole I had trouble navigating was hole 7. I wasn't sure what basket to throw to. You throw right across the tee to #8. If you want a longer shot you can throw to basket #9 which is about 40 to 60 feet farther. The fairway to #9 is sweet :o.

There are now concrete tees.  I think that a few holes have been changed around since the original installation.  For the most part very short. Not all tees are pointed in the direction of the current basket locations.  If I played the course correctly, from 6 to 7 you have to double back to the tee on 7 and the two fairways intersect. Hole 9 is a nice righty hyzer, but you drive over a brand new pavillion.

I had the luck to have a face to face with the gentleman that was the dizzle behind the Grayslake DGC.
I asked a couple of direct questions off the cuff that caught him off guard like...
Have you ever heard of the PDGA ?  answer. " No What is that ?
Do you know who Barry Schultz is ? answr " No I dont think I know who that is.
How far can some one expect to throw a golf disc ? he wasnt sure what I was talking about so I said Frisbee.. He didnt have an answer.
I mentioned that the walk between #1 Tee Box and #9 Basket was longer than the entire course.
Conversation ended..

Concrete Tee Pads and an Improved Layout.
"King of Nines" Should include this course for Next Tourney.Single Disc
The final layout is in and very playable. Should get greener and better with time.
Bad-rapt 1st edition but it deserved it.
Still play with caution, this is a park that gets a lot of foot traffic.
Crossover exists so beware. Heads Up!
Still a better course, but a much better one could have been developed.
