WTF?

In previous years the park district has had the event the participants I assume were using grills and left many nice circular burn spots around the walking path and ashes on some tees. campfires in the baskets was an exaggeration

Lol Ok. At least the campfires in the basket part being an exaggeration is good news. I had a vivid picture of people just piling chopped wood from the trees throughout the course into the basket and setting it ablaze with a flamethrow. They have a picnic table area for a reason.

The picnic tables are not supposed to be burned either. :D

Does anyone know why the big bridge was moved on hole #16 at bevier? It was moved off into the woods on the right side. Played there today after not having played a full round since the fall and shot a 56.

It was washed out during Wednesday night's massive rain storm which swept it 40 or 50 feet downstream.  Not the first time thats happened.

Holes 7,8,14,14a at Fairfield were unplayable still as of last night.  I've never seen the water any where near that high at that course since moving here 7 years ago.  It was at least knee deep from 8's green over to 15's tee.

My son and I drove down to play the Bevier Park course yesterday (we live in Kenosha) Bear with me, we're newbies to Disc Golf (although I've been throwing a frizbee around for 40 years).
Our first impression was what a nice course this was, tee boxes are great, holes clearly marked, great sign at the beginning of the course, baskets beautiful, it reminded me more of a golf ball course.  On hole number 5, I noticed the park across the street also had a disc golf basket.  Wow, two parks with courses together.  We'll have to play that one too.

Then we came to hole #9  "The basket is gone"  "Maybe were supposed to use # 18's basket - it's right over there"  "18?  The beautiful sign only showed 9 holes." " Well, if there's 18 holes here, where are they?  Across the street in the other park?"  "How does the 18th hole get over here then?"  We were very confused.  After a bunch of hunting, we found them all, played them all out of order, but played them all.

This brings up two questions:

Are there plans to move the tee numbers to the actual holes? ( I realize updating the pretty wood sign is a bigger task that would be done  in the future)  Are there plan to put tee numbers on the new holes?

And second (OK, it's actually my third question):
Par is marked differently on the signs than on the online scorecard.  Pars marked on the signs were much more realistic for newbies (and those of us more advanced in annual cycles than most of you younger folks) Hey, I can't throw a disc 400 miles like you guys.  SO my third question is this, is there some calculation for what par would be for a casual or newbie player as opposed to you more seasoned pros so that I can compare my scores to someone within my own ability?

Glad you came down to play the course.

It sounds like you figured it out eventually, but the park across the street after 5 is actually the same park and also a part of the disc golf course.  After Hole 5 you cross the street to play 6-11.  Then you cross back over for Hole 12 (which is labeled on the sign as Hole 6).

The course was originally designed as a 9 hole course which is why you see signs and cement tees for only Holes 1-9.  The course gradually expanded to become a full 18 holes a couple years ago.  The numbering has not yet been updated and I know others have experienced the same difficulty as you.  A coworker of mine who is very new to disc golf went to play Bevier this past Monday on my advice.  He was also using the Park Districts map from their website, but I warned him about the holes across the street. He still missed Holes 16 and 17 which are back in the woods.  Following the little red wooden arrows underneath the baskets is intended to point you towards the next tee, however some of these have gotten twisted around.

As far as par goes...

In ball golf a par 4 is pretty much a par 4 whether you are Tiger Woods who makes a par or better 90% of the time or you are Dan Michler who would make a par or better 0.0001% of the time.

In disc golf, we would call every hole at Bevier a par 3, with the exception of the 650 foot Hole 11 which is a par 4.  If you want par to be closer to your personal skill level, take the number of perfect drives it takes you to get within putting distance (lets call this 60 feet even though you aren't making many 60 footers) and then add 2 strokes.  This is par.

As far as typical scores go....

A 'scratch' or 'pro' level disc golfer would average around a 48 at Bevier, higher of course on a windy day.

For a new recreational level player, I would aim for a score of about 68.

In comepetitive disc golf events we have various amateur divisions.
In the lowest division, a score of about 62 would probably be average.  In the next flight up, 57.  In the highest amateur division, an average score would probably be about 53.  Most pros would be shooting 51 or better.

Thank you so much for the info Dan !

You've hit the nail on the head for scoring for me.  I can hit a 68 on UW Parkside's course, and I scored a 67 at Lutvig Park in Janesville yesterday.  But courses with extremely long holes like you mentioned I get a much higher score.  I can sink a putt from 15 feet, but 60?  Wow, that'll take a while.  I can only throw adisc 200 feet or so and that's using a long distance driver so long holes are a killer for me.

SO bottom line, if I plan on one over par of 3  for each hole (multiple short throws to get near the basket or a bad putt here and there) I should be at par for a beginner...correct?

Dan Michler

If I assume your maximum distance is about 220 feet, par would be about 67 at Bevier.

Go to an open spot where you can't lose a disc and just keep throwing as far as you can.  Your distance will increase.  Also, make sure you are gripping only the rim of the disc and not the disc plate.  Focus on keeping the disc low and flat.  If you keep at it, your scores will improve quickly.

Say, thanks for all the input.  it is nice to hear advice from those much more advanced than myself.

Is there anyone out there willing to take some pictures of Bevier and put together something like the link below. The course is looking really good right now and i'd like to get some tee signs made this winter. The course could really use them. Here is a link to Streamwood. Juan Lopez did these.

I want to print 8X10 pictures. I'll laminate them then frame them. Any help would be much appreciated.

A big thanks to "Nasty" Nate Baron. He rescued old basket #1 that was stolen from Bevier several years ago.

I am going to install it in the short #18 position this afternoon. 18 will have 2 baskets in the ground for a while.

DISContinuum purchased a few items for Bevier.

All 18 baskets now have orange tape on the poles.
The added 9 holes have orange painted rocks.
Holes # 12, 14, 15, & 18 have brass #'s on the pole to identify them correctly.
Although basic, tee signs will be added to the 9 holes that do not have them. I'm hoping to have them installed on Thursday.

Played the Bev this afternoon.  The park obviously took significant damage from the wind storm yesterday, however the course was pretty lucky.  For the most part, I don't think the lines will be impacted much once everything is cleaned up (that could take awhile).  The right side blocker on 18 is down, which does make that hole significantly easier.  Otherwise, the course should eventually return to its original state.

This week gets a little better. I e-mailed my contact at the park district.

Hello Brett,

It has been quite some time since we discussed disc golf issues.  I would like, if I could, to meet with you to review items you listed.  I would like to keep you in the loop of a possible Army Corp. Grant that may change the look of Bevier Park and part of the course.  I would also like input from you on the old soccer field area; any ideas on how to reuse the area?  At this point we are very early in the process; however I still would like to discuss the possibilities.

Based on your needs maybe we could put a work day together with district staff and disc gold club members.  I will be out of the office from the 26th - 30th.  I could meet the first week of April if that works for you?

Some items I listed.
1. Add a hole between #16 and 17. The club has an extra basket to so
that is paid for. We'd need to define a fairway. Change the tee for current #17.
2. We'd like to build a small bridge from 17 to 18. We'd be willing to
build it and pay for supplies if the park district doesn't have the supplies.
3. We'd like to move the short basket on #18.
4. We'd like to talk about options to upgrade the 9 tees without
concrete to concrete.
5. Tee signs for those lacking.

I don't want to spread rumors or false statments but i spoke with someone who plays bevier on a daily basis and he said he ran into a gentleman  from the park district that identified himself as a PD Supervisor.  They talked about the disc golf course and apparently the PD Sup. said they are considering removing the forest and are in the process of estimitaing the cost of such a project.

Again i was not in the conversation but is there any truth to that?

Side Note
Your list is solid Brett.  Some of the guys and i were going to make a list of improvements that could be made and see what you thought but it looks like you are way ahead of us!  Interesting ideas on the hole changes too. Wish i would have seen this thread sooner

Also, some guys are rebuilding a structure between hole 8 and the first wooded hole using the downed tree limbs from last summers storm, its cleared up a few holes on the course.

I am not sure what's going to happen at the park. I did hear they are reworking some drainage. Hopefully it does not affect the course.

I saw the new hut on Thursday. I had no clue it burnt down. I hadn't been out there since last fall.
