I'm not trying to get the scoring system changed for this year. I'm just voicing my opinion for next year, & who knows, maybe this point system is the right thing & it will shut me up. I'm just concerned that it is not going to be competitive. I've stated before that it is my fault for not paying more attention to detail. I missed the scoring info at the meetings for some reason. I think a big factor I liked last year is that there was a reward for showing up. Jim, Jason, & I were rewarded for playing in Crystal Lake when no one else showed up. What if only 2 people show up in Joliet & both shoot +100 over par. They wouldn't make up ground on anyone. They would have to drop that score. I'm just throwing out some ideas that I thought about earlier but Bruce sparked up my feelings toward the scoring.

Here is the link to the Safari Series Page. I think this will help out. We are playing all 18 hole courses. I think the scoring is going to be interestingly bad/good. 1 awful day or one great day can make or break your series depending on how many you play. A top player from either division could run away with 1st easily. I've already made my predictions. If possible, pick the shortest/easiest courses during the year. I've played 9 of the 12 courses. Bevier & Lippold are by far the 2 easiest. Don't miss these 2 or you may not stand a chance.

Here is another link to another discussion. ] http://discontinuum.org/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.cgi?action=Read&BID=9&TID=113&SID=2117

I thought the safari scoring last year was very accurate. We gave the first place finisher 20 & went down 1 point for every position. I think after 4 events that Al & Shawn were  within 1 or 2 points & several others were just 3-5 points back.

Sorry Bruce, forgot that you cannot access that board.

Sorry Mirth, for bringing back those bad memories.

Example of scoring.

These are the resulst of the first & second rounds of the Steady Ed Tournament @ Parkside. Both 18 holes Long then Short. Here is why I don't like the scoring.

Shawn--58--49--107---0

Brett---62---49--111--+4

Jim-----61--57--118---+11

Jon----67--52--119----+12

Myk---67---59--126---+19

Mirth--75--57--132----+25

It is impossible to make 11+ strokes up unless you drop that score. You can't expect a top player to drop that many strokes.

Best Shot type Scoring

Shawn--10--9---19

Brett---6----9---15

Jim-----8---4----12

Jon----4----6----10

Myk----2---2----4

Mirth---1---1----2

Just throwing some ideas out for next year.

The best thing about this is that we are able to discuss the scoring now rather than bitch about it later. I didn't mean to spark anything, I was just throwing out my stupid opinions. That is the best thing about DISContinuum & this sweet message board.

I think we should keep in mind that all our opinions will keep this club growing. No one is right or wrong on any topic. That is how we feel. Don't take anything personal.

I've been known to be an idiot on more than

1(100) ocassions. I really like the Safari Series. I was one who liked the scoring last year. I remember talking about the Safari Series at each meeting. I know we discussed prizes, format., & schedule.  I honestly can't remember talking about the scoring. For some reason I thought we were throwing out our worst score like we did last year. I knew that we were going to take the seven best scores & throw out the worst if over 7 events were played. I must have had a brain fart & ASSumed. I already stated that it was MY FAULT for not paying to attention detail if scoring was discussed in more detail.

I'm not trying to pressure anyone into changing anything. I still plan to play every event that I can & i'll have fun no matter what the outcome is.

Personally i'd like to see a set point value. Here is what i'd vote for. Best Shot scoring is decent but it is tough when you finish outside of 5th place & lose a bunch of points. I don't imagine that we will get more than 10 per division. If so, it could be bumped up to 20. If only you show up, you are rewarded with 10 points no matter how good or bad you throw. If 10 show up, you have to earn every point you can get.

1st-]  10

2nd-]  9

3rd-]   8

4th-]   7

5th-]   6

6th-]   5

7th-]   4

8th-]   3

9th-]   2

10th-] 1

I actually like the venting. At least we clear the air now rather than later. I remember last year that we changed the scoring after the first event of the Safari Series. I'm not exactly how it was to start last year, but I did like the point system that we ended the leagues with. Everyone did bitch about the 1st Safari Series Event & Scoring. That is a fact. We then decided to make wholesale changes & I was all for them. The last 3 events were fine & scoring worked out quite well.  1 first & 3 guys tied for 2nd. It doesn't get much more competitive than that. I was one who liked the Safari Series scoring system that we finished with last year.

That is why when mentioned that we'd drop our worst score, I assumed it was from the points system. I just assumed we drop the worst score from total score, it would be the point system. I really don't recall specific scoring discussed in detail.

Here is my concern about using total score.

1. You miss the 2 shortest courses, you are at disadvantge.

2. You have +5 to +10 round, you better make at least 8 events to drop that score.

3. At a tournament, you either play well, play average, or play bad. At the next tournament you play, you start with a clean slate. I don't want to play an event if I know I was +8 at the first event & bthat I have to shoot -8 just to play even.

4. I want to use these events as tournament style practice. With this scoring system, it takes away strategy that would be used at regular tournaments. Example: I'm up 1 stroke on the field going into the last few holes. I'm going to play it safe rather than chance a 4 and fall back to the field. With overall scoring, i'm forced to try to make as many 2's as possible if i'm behind on the overall leader. That might cost me a first place finish that day.

5. I predicted the pro/adv division would have someone win by 30+ strokes. Is that competitive? How are you rewarded by winning 1 event if you know you 25 strokes back of 1st place anyway? At least you know you are going to make up some ground with a point system.

i just want to play as well. for me, last year's safari really changed my game anyway. it made me improve. i sucked so bad at the first one, i switched from forehand to backhand. whatever scoring method is used, i'll still play as much as possible & have fun doing it.

I dont' want to change the the integrity of our club. I think club meetings are important & opinions of our members are too. I am fine keeping it the same or changing the system as long as everyone can live with it. I could have lived with it the other way but I also wanted to voice my opinion on how I think the system would have worked. Who knows, maybe there is a better system than both ways we have discussed. We do have a year to see & any adjustments will be taken care of if needed. Anyone want to get on AOL IM tonight around 8:00PM & discuss this some more? comincioli is my screen name.

What a awesome turnout today. 16, Awesome!!! We all had our fair share of problems with the tough wind & cold. Also saw a few hockey pucks out on the ice. 1 of those would be mine & jim lost his ce teebird way out on the pond by #9.  Lots of new faces around & a few new club members as well. Nice meeting all of you. I hope to see you again & get to know you better. Welcome new club members, what a great start to 2003.

Welcome Steve!

We are glad you had a great time. This is what Discontinuum is about. I was in your shoes a year and a half ago. I had just started playing & everyone in the club got me addicted to disc golf. Your game will improve quickly. Our events & tournaments are great to learn how to play.

I agree, keep the safari series the same. Turnout is nice, but we aren't going to get a crowd of 16 every time.

I think that is a good idea about moving the Widdershins. I also like the idea that it would be a week after the Parkside Tournament & we'd be able to play in it and advertise our tournament as well. Turnout for the Widdershins may grow form this.

Shawn,

Are there going to be hole sponsors for the PDGA event @ Parkside.
