Saw The Number 23 the other night. Pretty good suspense film, weird to see Jim Carrey in a serious role but I thought he did _really_ well.

Two movies:

300 very good movie, but not much chance of a sequel.

Smokin' Aces A steaming pile of dung.  A complete waste of time. Garbage.  The worst.  Pulp Fiction wanna be that wasn't. Horrible.

I made the mistake of thinking 300 was about the Battle of Thermopylae.  Turns out it is based on a graphic novel.  Xerxes is portrayed as an 8 ft tall androgynous megalomaniac, and all these freaky giant monsters attack the Spartans.  They also have the Spartans break ranks during the battle scenes.  If they had actually fought that way, they all would have died in the first hour of the battle.  Its too bad they made such a mockery of it, because it is one of the coolest stories of the ancient world without making it into a comic book.

But if you go into it with no historical reference, the battle scenes are cool.  Its Hollywood.

My daughter has been walking around the house for two week singing "Spiderpig."  D'oh!  http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1808405878/trailer It's clip # 3.  Once you hear it, it will never leave your head.  I can't believe we're paying to watch something we could see on TV for free! If you ask me, everyone in the theaters are big suckers!  Especially me!

-Discovery channel did a whole special about how 300 was very accurate in many senses.  Incredible movie either way.  Saw that one at the IMAX and was really happy I did.

-The best IMAX 3D I've seen so far is Monster House (animation is almost like cheating, though).  Followed closely by Superman.  For Superman, you had to keep putting the glasses on and taking them off (I think there were 4-5 scenes in 3d).  Can't wait to see Harry Potter, although I'm dissappointed it's only 20 minutes of 3d.

-Transformers is tremendous.  Loved it.  You owe it to yourself to see this one on the big screen.  Turns out it's a reallt funny movie too.  Laughed out loud a lot.

-New Bourne also excellent.  I still wish they would stop shaking the camera so much in the action scenes.  It was not as bad (the shaking) as the second one, but you still can't see what the hell is going on when their kicking the shit out of each other.

In the end, forget everything above and go see the Simpsons.  You'll have to watch that movie like 50 times to catch everything.  What an incredible flick.  I can't believe it lived up to the hype and build up.

That kid is back on the escalator!!!

I caught this movie a few weeks ago.  Most Excellent!!!

Another great movie is Mr. Brooks.  Yes, it has Kevin Costner in it, but he's not playing his Dances with Wolves/Postman/Waterworld character this time.  This time, he's an actual bad guy, and he's pretty darn good, too.  The movie also has Dane Cook in it playing a more serious role.  You should totally check it out!!!

The newest Bourne movie is very good!

Once you unravel the extremely complex plot.

;D

I agree with Tim that the director relied too much on camera motion.  I guess that's cheaper than actually choreographing the scene.  It was a fun film, though.

I wasn't going to see it, but my Minister warned us all in his sermon that it was evil and we should boycott it.  I had the kids at the matinee that afternoon.  It was worth every penny.  It will be awesome when the DVD comes out so you have a chance to catch all the little gags in it.

A Scanner Darkly: Based on a Phillip K. Dick novel ( He also wrote Total Recall, Blade Runner and Minority Report).  Deals with drug addiction.  I didn't like the film too much until the very end when it all came together.  Uses the style that shows up in many commercials today, filmed in live action and then adds animation.  Kind of interesting, Robert Downey Jr. was very good in this film.

I agree with Tom on this, if you're watching & wondering where it's going don't worry, there is an ending.

Superbad. Funniest movie I've seen in the theater for a while now...

Tom McManus

At the theatre:  Superbad. Pretty funny, not a classic like Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, but still funny.

At home:  The Contract, Morgan Freeman and John Cusac.  Pretty good, typically can't go wrong with Morgan Freeman.  Letters From Iwo Jima.  Clint Eastwood, all subtitles, WWII told from the Japanese perspective.  I liked it but wouldn't recommend to most people.  Zodiac.  Very good movie,  a good look at the late 60s early 70s.  Very well done.

Saw "The Lookout" this weekend, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Decent movie with a few laughs in unsuspecting places, although if you've seen the trailer only the last part of the movie contains anything unforseen.

Bruce Brakel

I watched A Beautiful Mind this weekend.  I'd never seen it before.  It was worth the $2.  It is hard to say much about it without giving too much away.  It is a biography about a mathmetician.

Letters from Iwo Jima was an amazing flick.  Loved it to death.  Especially after watching Flags of our Fathers.  GREAT MOVIES!!!

Zodiac really didn't interest me to much, which surprised me.  I'm a huge serial killer movie fan and usually love this type of stuff, but there was nothing really about the murders or anything to give the characters more depth than, "We need to find the killer."

Saw "Shoot 'Em Up" on Saturday. GREAT action movie. If you like the 1st half of Crank, you'll like this movie. Plenty of off-beat laughs also. Paul Giamatti did a great job & Clive Owen was Clive Owen. Well worth first-run money.
