Attenion Worlds players.... First off, congrats on being there! I'm very jealous.  Even more so after I saw a pic of an ESP Zone in your player packs?!?  I have a fat stack of discs available to trade for your Zone's , I've been throwing them since picking up a prototype in Bowling Green & got an Ace with my Am Nats zone.

Anyway, keep up the good work! Can't wait for Worlds 09!

The Borg nearly shot an 1100 rated round at Victory, but bogied on 17.
Unbelievable.

Not a bogie. Hole 17 is par 4.
4 pars
13 birdies
1 eagle
I would like to have seen that performance.

It would be nice if the PDGA would have pictures from the Amateur Worlds also. So far from their coverage you would think this was Pro Worlds only!

btw Feldberg was out done on the second card by Matt Orum with a 41. Feldberg only had a 44. Give me some of that juice. You know something is wrong with par when a player turns in a -18. Why is par a 940 round?

Good to see, i'm not a big Nikko fan.

[rant]I realize that Worlds is more "Everyone's Tournament" rather than the most competitive event. Probably USDGC is the most competitive pro event that the sport has right now. However, I think it is ridiculous that we have our pros playing on courses where the top 100 pros are all double digit under par. What that means, of course, is that we have a silly idea of what par is and we lack courses that have engineered challenges and were built from the dirt up to challenge players in the same fashion that ball golf has. After 4 rounds in PGA tournament if anyone is double digit under par it is usually only the top 3 or 4 players. Of course this varies a little bit depending on the difficulty of the course and the conditions, but you will never see the top 100 PGA players under par let alone double digit under par. [/rant]

For some reason in disc golf a birdie is considered a good score and in ball golf a birdie is a great score. The courses have not kept pace with the improvements in technique and discs. If you look at some of the retro pictures from the 70's and 80's you see the top players throwing frisbee style discs using a frisbee style form. Using good technique and modern discs even lowly ams like myself can throw a disc 300 feet straight.

Combine that with our tradition of "par 3" golf and you have a sport where par doesn't mean what it should mean. Jack Nicklaus said that par (on a par 4 hole) should require 2 or 3 good shots and no bad shots or 1 bad shot, 2 good shots and 1 exceptional shot. He said that a birdie should require 1 exceptional shot and 2 good shots.

How many times do we see top disc golf pros throw a good drive and then drop it in for the birdie? Then repeat 18 times. How many times is a pro NOT aiming for the basket on the tee? How many times are they aiming for a spot that they can then have a chance to layup from for the par? I'd say almost never. It would be nice to have more USDGC style courses but with more variety in terrain and obstacles. USDGC does it with carefully placed tees and baskets corresponding to the sparse trees AND with lots of OB.

It's nice to see Bruce make the top pool after the Great Sort (I refuse to call it the "Great Shuffle" when NOTHING should get shuffled!). I'm sure that was one of his goals.

Jon, I totally agree with your stance on the reality of "par".

Brett just did pretty well also by shooting a 1025! Only four strokes off Feldberg and shot better than Nikko, Schultz, and Climo! Way to go Brett!

Jon,
I am new to the sport and I read your rant on "pros" after which I checked the "Worlds" scoreboard and found it amusing that even the top 10 of the "Advance Ams" are at -19 under par. I would have to say your rant does ring true. I hope the PDGA notices as well.

Love & Peace

When Brett is on he can be freakin awesome. I still hold out the -8 from the longs I saw him shoot at McNaughton before the Lesser Peoria Open as one the best rounds I ever saw personally.

Go Brett!

Only now am I seeing the brighter side of playing some many event & missing out on worlds.... (long story)

I've meet so many discers from all over the country & joined up in a few clubs that I will play multiple events with.  I have alot of am's (and a handfull of pro's) that I can follow & throw vicariuosly through!  Otherwise I would be really bummed out I'm not there with everyone else!

Bruce and I ran the Peoria Open in 2007 but Bruce nick named it the Lesser Peoria Open because it was just an Am B and Pro C tier event. It was also Lesser in that we only had about 100 players over two days. Maybe it was less than 100.
